Missing from the analysis, imo, is the later career development potential Toney has demonstrated…… he’s stepped up from L1 to Championship o Premiership in successive seasons, he has a limit obviously, but has development potential left in him……his first season in the EPL has yielded fewer goals, but the defending at EPL is exponentially higher than his previous experience. His second season in the EPL will show what he has learned and how he will deal with the more capable defensive systems and players.
@PythagorasinBoots

A fair point and we shall see this season if he can exponentially continue to grow again or whether his ceiling is close to being reached. What has concerned me is his attitude - not showing the mindset needed of a hungry individual looking to become the best at what he does. Hope it’s just confidence and not misplaced arrogance.

@@PythagorasinBoots thats just his confidence in his team/own ability. He is disliked everywhere he goes, a very misunderstood player in terms of ability and personality and often feeds off of unfair criticism. Even when faced with controversy at brentford he kept his work rate high, constantly one of the hardest workers at brentford and i think thats why brentford fans love him. A little bit like Gareth bale in that respect.

Italy’s biggest young talent Tonali needs a vid or Brazil’s Endrick. Endrick is probably the only player I’ve seen gain such a huge traction in the media at the age of only 15. Already has a million followers which is crazy. Or Rayan Cherki, France’s biggest young talent. Reminds of a hazard type player. It’s too bad he recently broke his foot.

huge proble with ur analysis is the dismissal of the role toney had to fill in for brentford in the prem. he drops deep way more often than other striker if u check his progressive passes recieved hes in the 28th percentile for top 5 league strikers. he didnt get to show his finishing ability and goal scoring as much, but inspite of that he overperforms his xg just to show how clinical he is.

I think many of the drawbacks of toney in the PL will change with this coming season. He will become the sole striker in a 4-3-3, his best formation, playing the same role that watkins and maupay did for brentford, lots of crosses, lots of headers, lots of goals. I think people are more than happy to overlook how brilliant brentford are at progressing, there isnt another team in english football who do it as well as brentford. The most points per million £ spent last season, twice as efficient as 2nd place Brighton. Theyre investing heavily this summer and as the quality of the team improves i expect toney to get many more chances and many more goals. Not to mention some of the brilliant coaching staff acquisitions this summer, i can see brentford playing in europe in a few seasons. Might sound overly enthusiastic but i had to write a thesis on Brentford at uni and have been fascinated with them since. Truly a unique club.

@@JordanLAES I don't think it would have much impact on his technique. He's done it at Wembley in the most important game of his life. He places them in the corner of the net every time. Even when the keeper goes the right way they can't get close. Bruno's technique fails him fairly often.
@mrwabbit9576

@@JordanLAES the difference is technique. Toneys technique is just levels above. Forces keeper to commit and if they decide not to it's already too late. Time and time again keepers have either committed too early or decided to wait, only to fall short as the kick was too powerful and well placed. He gets ridiculous power from a standing kick. You don't have to see it at the top level to observe the quality of technique. Whatever corner he goes for he always hits. It's the best penalty technique you could grace a player with. This is like comparing an Alexander Arnold free kick to Ward-Prowse. I actually remember expecting Fernandes to miss his penalty Vs Arsenal last season. He looked like a nervous wreck stepping up to the spot. His facial expression looked like he'd just been told his dad was dying. You'd never catch Toney giving off such nervous energy on the pitch. Toney is an ice cube. Seems to play better when people are on his back. Proven twice he can step up in competition without issue.

Worth mentioning, that any player can improve drastically in their early-mid twenties. Keep that in mind. If we'd go back and did analysis on Ronaldo when he was 20-22, we would rate him at 75 with potential to go to 85... turns out he improved so much more than estimated/expected.
@PythagorasinBoots
2 жыл бұрын
Disagree. First time I saw Ronaldo v Bolton, I would have expected him to be a potential GOAT. His footwork was incredible. He also had a brilliant Euro 2004. Only clueless people would moan about his tendency to overdo it and not have end product. Toney is nowhere near a Cristiano, so you can't just say just because anyone is 25 they have the same level of potential to GOAT it - not a sensible argument.

@@PythagorasinBoots When I saw Ronaldo, first few games in man utd, I was a kid and still knew he'll become the GOAT, but because some people have this 'fire' and the desire in their eyes and hard work. But there are other examples of young footballers in their 20s that you might think their potential is limited but you'd be surprised on how much sometimes they improve. A lot of factors to consider, teams, managers, luck, hard work, etc.

Completely agree. Just saying that my analysis on Toney is based on how much he could improve based on the right environment. I can’t see him based on even if put in ideal circumstances becoming a world class false 9 - it’s too much of a leap and doesn’t make sense with his physical and technical profile. He could become a baby Drogba type but a lot of things need to go right.

I have to disagree with you about his dribling. He can pass to progress the ball, it just the quality of attacker around him was not very good also a foul is safer. Look how he progress the ball in Champion ship but he just simply didn't do that in Premir league.
@PythagorasinBoots
2 жыл бұрын
He was able to progress it better due to the lower standard. The EPL is going to have better quality defenders so if he isn’t eating up yards with his dribble it is because he can’t get away from those defenders as easily and personally he doesn’t look the type whose going to beat players and go on a long run.. his body doesn’t really allow for that. He is more likely to beat men in tight spaces and work an opportunity.
@nhanNguyen-wo8fy

@@PythagorasinBoots I don't think he was able to drib like in Champion ship like you said. but he has an amazing butt with stability, I know he can use his butt like he did to cover the ball and make pass, and he pass very good. The problem is attaker around him was not good enough for Premir Leage to make run, so he didn't do that much. He will be amazing in the role of Tadic 2018 Ajax, he is not as good a dribler as Tadic but like you said he make it up by his aerial duel.

Could be a good false 9. He's good at holding the ball this will give the front line more time to create room ofcourse this will results to more scoring chances. I see him doing the same job that we've known Firmino for. I'm not saying he's playing exactly like Firmino, ofcourse each one of then have their unique touch and style. But both of them are more like creators than scorers. I really don't know if we need a false 9 rightnow as manchester united. A false 9 striker needs to play with sharp minded players, intelligent and ofcourse players who always have hunger for scoring goals, currently I don't see such players in man utd. Rushford, Sancho and Martial, I mean they didn't even score enough goals last season. If we will sign this buddy (Toney) , then will have to sign Antony otherwise we would have failed big time this summer 😪😫

If I’m being honest he just doesn’t have the overall mobility and technical excellence to be a false 9. He’s a proper 9. There is a reason why we see so few false 9 - it’s not an easy profile to find.
