I remember Billick once recalling how on certain playes Reed suddenly rushed towards positions he had no business going to, with great results most of the time, only to explain later how, watching a ton of film on the QB he was facing, he realized how in this or that situation he would consistently thros here or there... tendencies even coaches failed to pick up on... heck, probably even the QBs themselves :)

The evolution of drafting left some decisions that were a bit wonky. In the earliest days of football scouts did it all by eye and by "having a feeling" then they started to go by archetype- super big fat guy goes here, very tall fast guy goes here, and if you dont meet that then you're out of luck, etc. and now they go by statistic prediction of multiple factors that arent just counting stats. Ed Reed fell foul of the latter two as he was not the "big and fast" safety (supposedly) and he did not have the projected numbers on things like his speed to make front offices think that he was going to grow into a dominant NFL players. In their defense, the best college players dont always translate to good NFL players, just look at Tebow. Like Reed himself said "they always say 'Ed Reeds small'" which was a huge fear of a lot of old-mentality GMs. So many players fall through the cracks because of fears that look at everything about a player that cant be fixed instead of focusing on how capable that player is of elevating themselves. The GMs that can see past that have made themselves into fan favorites and legends because of their ability to pick the gold out of the pile everyone else already walked past. This is what makes Ozzie Newsome such a legendary GM. He managed to merge the three styles, using stats and types to draw his attention but not as a reason to discredit someone, and then the years of experience to evaluate them personally before making a decision. The man just knew the qualities to look for especially in a players mind and was great at not getting distracted when he saw an exceptional talent. He drafted Ray Lewis And Jon Ogden in the same round(first) of the same draft(1996,) 4th for JO and 26th for Lewis. His track record is quite remarkable, the only real mistake he made was hiring Brian Billick and letting go of Trent Dilfer.

Another aspect this video doesn't mention is how much a film room warrior he was. He watched tape like very few others. Once when asked what sets him and Ray Lewis apart of the rest, maybe the first thing he mentioned was how much they both spent in the film room watching and disecting game film either alone or with theammates. By the time a game came, many times they knew the tendencies of the opponent's palyers almost better than those players themselves. They could literally foresee how a play would happen.

I'd like to say they were put into place because he figured out how to be so effective they needed to stop him, but no. Its just that he was a garbage human being. It doesnt matter how intensely you play your sport, you dont try to paralyze people or permanently disfigure them. "It wasnt illegal" is a very weak defense, a lazy governing body does not equate to morality. Did everyone graduate from the Chase Utley school or something?
