Where do you rank Moses among the greatest Centers of All Time? NOTE: One huge thing I forgot to mention in the video… Moses wasn’t just a beast on the boards, but more specifically the OFFENSIVE boards, which are the harder ones to get. There are 8 players in NBA history with over 4,000 Offensive Rebounds. Robert Parish is 2nd All-Time with 4,598…. Moses has 6,731. That also doesn’t include his ABA years... Its laughable how much he dominates EVERYONE else in that area.

@@19brittani I wouldn't exactly call Rodman one-dimensional, who can guard 1-5 on the floor, an occasional scorer during his days in Detroit, and an underrated facilitator when being in that Bulls Triangle with MJ and Pippen. He averaged 25 and 15 at SE Oklahoma U in three years, which goes to show he was a capable scorer of the ball, but was never his main focus as a pro. But, of course, he wasn't the player Moses Malone was.
@DavidBroiles

Rodman was put on a prime Shaq for 1/2 game and held "the most dominant player ever"to 0 points. Rodman studied every player's ball rotation for Offensive and Defensive boards before the game to determine his best rebounding position. Jordan and the Bulls had trouble getting past the Pistons with Rodman on it, so they picked him up. Rodman created Offense by his Defense. I would of loved to see him go head to head against Chamberlain, Russell and Kareem to see how he would defend them. He was one of the fastest & quickest players in the league had more endurance than any player, could guard any position and won multiple Championships on different teams. Like Bill Russell, Rodman fit in where he was needed most to make the Team better and to win, not just to boost his own scoring stats. He could score as well if that was what was needed. Moses Malone was incredible too

As a Sixers fan, Moses is THE reason we won the title in ‘83. He has long arms so he was a monster on the boards. Moses is underrated simply because his career started in the 70’s and the media doesn’t care about the NBA until Bird/Magic came in 1979-80. It’s the same with the NFL as the media doesn’t care about anything before the Pre-Suberbowl Era as they don’t even count Championships only Superbowls. Vince Lombardi has 5 titles, but many fans wouldn’t know that cause the media only mentions he won Super Bowl 1 and 2. Moses and Kareem are forgotten when the media mentions the greatest Centers, so naturally younger generations will never know the true story. Only Baseball recognizes the WHOLE history as most young fans atleast know about Ruth, Cobb and Willie Mays. Oh yeah, Moses had the greatest prediction, “Fo, Fo, Fo!”

Moses is the most underrated center of all-time, no doubt. He wasn't necessarily pretty to watch because he had a sort of grind it out offensive game. He didn't have a sky hook or a beautiful jumper but he WAS super effective facing up or with his back to the basket. He wasn't the most athletic center either but he did know how to use his body and a number of fakes to free himself up. He also had a lot of heart and determination to rebound and score. His most epic battles were probably with Boston when Bird was young and when Malone was with Houston and then the Sixers. The 80s had a number of great players and Malone was one of them.

@@Amick44 The main reason why Kareem's rebounding prowess started dwindling, is because he was more of a finesse-style player, and no longer wanted to bang with other great centers in the painted area, whom possessed physicality. Great analysis of a once in a lifetime player. Pointing out that his legacy becomes diminished due to the number of teams he played for, is a point I've never heard mentioned and it's very valid. But just so you and others know, we Sixer fans do jealously claim Moses to the exclusion of all others. We're forever in his debt for taking us to the promised land. I followed his career ever since he left Petersburg, Virginia and almost went to play for Lefty Driesell at Maryland. Whenever the subject is "the greatest" I personally reduce the question down to "if I had to win one game, who would I want?" - after all, as Herm Edwards famously said "you play to win the game." Malone was like a BMW, the longer he ran, the stronger he got. He literally owned crunch time. If I had to win one game, I'd take Moses over Kareem, because he would simply outwork Kareem and was a superior rebounder. If I had to win one game I'd take him over Wilt because - and the piece fails to mention - Moses was a lethal free throw shooter. He was an absolute master of the 'and one!' Every game of the Sixers '83 championship finals they'd be behind in the 4th quarter. Malone would invariably draw the foul, step to the foul line, sweat dripping off his face like Niagara Falls, raise the ball over his head and line drive it off the back rim and down the twine....boom, boom, boom. I'm convinced those booms had a psychological effect on his opponents, as they realized each boom was but another nail in their coffin of defeat. One should not forget as well that Moses did suffer from a speech impediment - much more severe than Joe Biden's even - and in a hyper media conscious league, he'd shy away from the spotlight, leaving it to others. Self promotion was not his thing. It wasn't necessary. His game spoke volumes and it did so resoundingly. Thank you for this feature and allowing me the opportunity to reflect on the greatest center I've ever seen.

On the money. I watched Mose Malone play on TV as a teen, and what I remember of him is exactly how great of a player that this video shows. Mose was one of those rare great talented centers that didn't take a back seat to Kareem--and proved to be more than Jabbar's equal--in my opinion. Smart, agile and quick; a shooting guard in a 6'10" frame. A living nightmare to opposing centers throughout the league. Magnificence is his name.

I am a lifelong Hawks fan (yes, we do exist) and had the pleasure to watch two of the all time best in the 80's live and in person when Nique and Moses played next to each other. Moses wasn't in his prime years then but he could still produce. Moses has been almost completely forgotten by modern fans (just like Nique sadly) and it is a crime against basketball. Moses is definitely in the mix of the greatest center in NBA history.

Thank you so much. Moses is by far my favorite player of all time. Never once saw him play, but as a player you notice similarities between your game and the legends; for me, that legend was Moses. People stan a lot of things; again, for me that's Moses. I think he's sorely overlooked and underrated for the reasons you mentioned, but also because of his playstyle and prime which happened before the NBA really took off. Someone should do a 30 for 30 on him; he's 1 of the most historically relevant yet overlooked players and lesser players or sports figures have had them already. Jonny you forgot to really drive home how great he was at offensive rebounding. He is to that what Steph is to 3s. Also, the only players with more boards and buckets is Kareem and Wilt. There's so much to be said about him but I can't write it all lol. I will leave you and anyone else with a shoutout to 70sfan's hourlong supercut of Moses' game if you or anyone else is interested.

I got to be an honorary ballboy at a Spurs-Bullets game in the 80s and my seat was inside the basket support cage on the actual floor a few feet in front of the courtside seats. And oh my God, watching Moses Malone and Frank Brickowski just beating the hell out of each other at the rim that game from five feet away was insane. As physical as 1980s basketball looked on TV, it looked wholly different and so much more intense from that close. Moses must have been such a bastard to play against. I can't imagine trying to move that guy. Getting to watch Moses and Bernard King from that close is one of my greatest basketball memories.

He was also a sullen, quiet guy which impacts how he was thought of. Moses Malone was probably the best player in the league from 1978 to 1983 which is a good stretch. Good point about switching teams; it’s part of what people hold against Lebron James which I don’t get

You are right about Moses Malone! What don't you get about LBJ's club hopping to win rings? First D-Wade, then Kyrie, now AD, and who will it be next, Kawhii🤔? You still don't get it? Did Bird, Magic, MJ, or Kobe, lobby for elite Stars to come and play with them to win 🏆's, or did they go to teams elite Stars were on to win Chips? Now I know you got it, right?
@swpdisciple

Ball Smack Bird and Magic played on teams that people would consider super teams already. Kobe very nearly forced his way out of LA and Dr Buss wouldn’t let him go. This is all a matter of public record. (Moses Malone was traded and didn’t necessarily request a trade btw...Dr J had been clamoring for a bit to play next to Darryl Dawkins for years...) Put it this way, you think LBJ wouldn’t have won with McHale, Parish, Johnson and Ainge? You think he wouldn’t have won with Kareem, Worthy, Cooper and Scott? Another way to look it is, who would you swap for Lebron those first 7 years in Cleveland and win 60+ games and make it to the finals? His 2nd best player was either Mo Williams or Zydrunas Ilgauskas. That’s one of the bigger miracles in NBA history.

@@swpdisciple bottom line, The Elite Stars of my Era, Stayed Put! Stuck it out with their Franchises for better or worse! Magic didn't say, I'm going to Boston! MJ didn't say I'm going to Detroit! Nique didn't say I'm going to team up with Drexler or Hakeem or Ewing and vice versa! LeBron is this Era's best player, but yet in order to win his first Chip, he had to go and play with a player who already had won two, WADE! Then he decides to go back to Cleveland and play with Irving, who was at the time the Premier Guard of the league! Then what does he do? He goes to L.A. and lobbies for Durant 1st, then Kawhii, then Paul George, then AD. Come on guy! That's the only way he can win anything? THE QUOTE ON QUOTE, BEST PLAYER IN THE NBA, having the LEGACY of going or either having come to play on his teams, the best of the best in the NBA... Man, that don't even sound right! If it would have happened Organically, meaning through trades, through the draft, etc, I've got no issues, but he orchestrated his championships by playing WITH the best in the league, NOT AGAINST THEM! He didn't BEAT D-Wade, he JOINED HIM! HE JOINED KYRIE! HE NOW WENT TO JOIN AD IN L.A. which almost didn't happen; None The Less He's ONCE AGAIN, playing with the best center in the league! Next, WHAT'S IT GONNA BE AFTER AD? HIM GOING TO MILWAUKEE TO PLAY WITH YANNIS, OR WILL HE BE GOING TO BROOKLYN TO PLAY WITH KD? OR, WILL IT BE GOLDEN STATE, TO TEAM UP WITH THE SPLASH BROTHERS? He doesn't belong on Mount Rushmore with Magic, Bird or MJ, or Kobe and Shaq! Tim "Big Fundamental Duncan" belongs there before him.....
@swpdisciple

Ball Smack Tim Duncan is a legitimate point. The rest aren’t. You totally disregarded all of my valid points. There wasn’t free agency in the way we know now prior to say Jason Kidd debating between New Jersey and San Antonio in 2007. Magic already had a championship-worthy team, same for Bird, same for Dr J. I’d liken the teams Lebron won 61, 66 games with in the mid 2000’s and took to the finals in 2007 to the Bulls before 1990. Jordan was maxing out at 50 wins with those teams and battling the Pistons in the playoffs, similarly to Lebron. The Kobe example is hilarious because he threatened to leave and very nearly did but once he got that big front line they immediately became a 60+ win team and went to the finals 3 years in a row (though if the Celtics were healthy they’d have likely lost all 3). The Wade thing is funny because the Wade, Lebron signed up for is not what he got. Wade was excellent that first year in 2010 though not quite prime Wade (he was the best player in the 2011 Finals) but by the 2nd, certainly 3rd year, Bosh was the 2nd best player. Lebron gets no love for making that team dominant with Chalmers as the starting PG and Birdman Anderson as the starting center with Haslem and Norris Cole playing major minutes. Who else can do that? Historically, maybe a prime Larry Bird or David Robinson, that’s about it.

Many remember him only for his offensive rebounding, but his overall game was amazing. His post game was phenomenal, he had a smooth mid-range J, and he was a tough defender. Sure, his defensive stats weren't eye-popping, but many centers from that era would tell you how good a defender he was. His best trait, though, was his durability. Few centers can play that long and still be productive.
