"When the fog comes, I will hold your hand tight and remember for you. You don't have to be afraid." This line had me sobbing! So beautiful, and well put. Nurse approved!

My mum often worries about developing dementia, and because I absolutely love her I worry about her too. This quest made me tear up a bit. I can guarantee I'll be like poor Fenirra if my mum develops dementia, struggling to accept it and willing to forgive anything because I know that isn't the woman I once knew I make sure to tell her I love her every day, so I hope that if she does become like Garokkah she'll at least remember the love

Guerilla really did their thing with this side quest. This one, as the one with Penttoh (I know, not a medically-related side quest), and his squad doing that climb in a snowstorm, are my favorite side quests. Side note: Penttoh is a beast.

As someone who is old enough to remember when media (tv, movies) didn't consult with psychology at all to seeing it being respectfully portrayed in games, it's a beautiful journey to have watched and I look forward to more. How we go forward is often determined by the stories we tell ourselves.

If you return to the memorial you can find the 3 characters around it help him in the correct way as he has entered another fog (none violent)

I'm a passionate gamer and used to work with Information Technology (IT) in a hospital for people with dementia (hospitals also need IT people 🙂 ), I would witness the patients' suffering and how much this impacts them and their families. Coincidentally my brother-in-law also suffers from mental illness and is refusing to take medicines because people in his neighborhood told him these medicines are for "crazy people", this is absurd! So much prejudice!!! I don`t know how I ended up finding this video, but it is so good to see gaming, that I love so much, spreading awareness to people who would perhaps never hear about the subject, or people who would have a "less understanding" point of view regarding the subject. I`m not connected to the health care in any degree at the moment, but loved your video and ask you to keep doing what you do! I will keep coming back to your channel from now on!

Hey @ronaldo thanks so much for the comment. I'm so glad you found your way here and I hope to hear your opinions more often! The mission of the channel is to do exactly what you said, plus also give gamers a bit of a peak into the health world as well. There's something really fascinating about these two industries (medicine and games) that seem like they should have nothing in common but actually have so many similarities

For me, this is one of the more memorable quest in the game. I do agree the devs did a great job designing this quest. Thank you making a video on this.

@@DigitalDocGames I'm just playing the game now because it's on PS+ and I had to Google the quest to see if anyone had mentioned how amazing it is and how well they handled dementia and how families cope with it (and possibly also PTSD given how Garokkah is clearly still scarred by the ambush despite his dementia)

This was extremely well done. My wife has studied medicine for some time too and we pointed out the many ailments in both Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. There's another character named Boomer who has, what we think is, autism. Love to see your thoughts on that too!

Yes! I found the Boomer storyline very well done. I didn't pick up on that one quite as fast but I think that is a credit to their subtlety and not "hitting you over the head" with a serious topic. I'll do my best to get a video out on that one! Thanks for checking out the channel!

Yes, Boomer is a high-functioning Autistic. She'd have to be high-functioning since her obsession is explosives. Ba-BOOM! I love Boomer.

Great video. I can think of another game touching on the same subject. This is a much broader example that wasn't meant to portray real life mental health, and instead is used thematically, but many characters in the Dark Souls series slowly go "hollow" as they lose their memories and connection to their life. (For lore reasons involving the world dying as a whole.) In some instances it portrays depression, trauma, and even dementia quite openly, and it's heartbreaking to see these NPCs we meet slowly losing their reason to live and becoming violent. Seeing how some NPCs refuse to accept defeat is also one of the themes.

Really interesting. Having played the souls games myself but I could definitely see this based on what I've watched. I think it's a great example too. Games don't have to depict health and illness in a 1:1 way to how it appears in the real world - one of the beautiful things about art is you can personify or emphasize certain things that you can't see in real life.

Hellblade is a shining star example for mental health representation and integration in games! If you have some time, you should check out my chat with Dr. Paul Fletcher, who served as the clinical consultant for Ninja Theory and is a big part of why that game is as great as it is! kzitem.info/news/bejne/zoiD3GWXgIuBl3Y - Amiad
