There is currently a bill in the senate to legalize marijuana recreationally in PA. Times are changing for the better... I grew up with Billie echoing throughout our home. Her music is still ominous and beautiful to this day, even though it also brings back bad memories for me. My dad was an alcoholic schizophrenic, who was very abusive, both mentally and physically. I remember him beating my mother and her always locking herself in their bedroom afterwards playing Billie Holiday, full blast on the record player, while I would try to remain a shadow so I wasn’t the next in line. Didn’t always work. I remember the vinyl album cover with Billie in a side profile pic with gardenias in her hair. I used to climb Magnolia trees and pick the flowers (I can smell them even now) for my mother because I found them, at that young age, to be similar, and I would present them to her as gifts, realizing afterwards the fragility of such flowers when they would wilt away and their petals would fall to the table. That simple gesture somehow gave me an early perspective on life that became even more profound when I heard Billie’s music playing, since sometimes I would come home and find my mother’s bedroom door locked and hear Billie’s voice haunting those halls in our home, and I knew what had happened while I was away, playing with my friends or riding my bike. And sometimes I would look over and see those magnolia flower petals decaying on the kitchen table. During those times, when she would lock herself away from him, it was always “I’m a fool to want you”, “The man I love”, “Willow weep for me”, and other songs playing. But “God bless the child” was the one she would always play just for me. I think for “strength”. My own favorites by her are “Good morning heartache”, “I’ll be seeing you”, and “Gloomy Sunday”. Her music will forever resonate with me, even though I never grew up during that era. I thank my mother for that. Good Morning Heartache, has always been my true favorite since I was a kid, though, up until this day. I play it from time to time. Either in stereo, or in my head. Back then, and now. Rest well, Lady Day. Thank you.

What he says in the very beginning is a little bit off. Strange Fruit as a song is based on a lynching that happened in Marion, Indiana. I don't mean to contradict his narrative, but to give further insight. I went there a while ago because of a friend's doctor appointment. I figured I'd find the tree to pay respects, but I couldn't. I couldn't find a marker or any evidence this lynching happened at all in the town. I admit I may have missed it, but I feel as if I didn't. Like the town swept it under the rug and only through the sacrifice of Billie Holliday did I know of it. So relevant to the history of our America and so forgetten. The coda of Run the Jewels 4 says it's the whole reason the album was made. Powerful

When learning about slavery in school as a child or when listening to this story and countless others i just cant wrap my mind around how cruel white people in America "were" and how utterly heartless they are now how when they hear it they just shrug and go oh well 🤔👉🏼🇺🇸
@smokedbrisket3033
5 жыл бұрын
Before you condemn white folks too much, remember that slavery has been an institution in all of mankind, practiced in all places and at all times by whoever was the conquerer. Ever heard of the "slavic" people? Substitute an "e" for the "ic" and you'll understand what that means. The Ottomans made slaves of them for centuries, just as they made slaves of black Africans. In fact, there were more black Africans expatriated to what are now present-day Turkey and Saudi Arabia than were sent to the New World; and the great bulk of those sent to the New World were sent to the Caribbean and to Brazil, not North America. This is not to minimize the utter horror of it, but Europeans were no worse about it than anyone else; and for Europeans, the practice of slavery ended in the late 19th century. Slavery still goes on today in much of Africa and Asia. In those days in the Ottoman Empire, it was customary to castrate the black male slaves as soon as they arrived in country. The beatings and hobblings which occurred in the N. American colonies/US were bad enough, but as far as I know, there were never any castrations done here, at least not as a matter of course the way it was done it Turkey and Saudi.

@@smokedbrisket3033 Chattel Slavery is unique to what Black people experienced from whites. What you just named was white on white crime for the most part, it has nothing to do with race, and it wasn't even close to what we experienced. Also, ours was for 300+ years and followed by an extra 150 years called Jim Crow, which only ended less than 60 years ago. My dad is older than that. It's recent.
@smokedbrisket3033
3 жыл бұрын
@@Casanova966 - as an FYI - Muslim enslavement of black sub-Saharan Africans started about 400 years before slave trade to the west started. And your time line is a little off. There was chattel slavery in North America for about 250 years, and Jim Crow ended a little under 100 years after Civil War ended. In contrast, Ottoman/Saudi enslavement of black Africans lasted for nearly 1000 years. From my recollection of the numbers, about 12 million black Africans were taken as slaves by the Ottomans and Arabs; about 9 million were sent west. Of that 9 million, somewhere around 900,000 were sent to North America. The overwhelming majority of the rest went to Brazil. In case you weren't aware, chattel slavery was the norm throughout most of human history, within all civilizations, particularly the "great" civilizations like Rome, Athens, Sparta, the Ottoman Empire, the Mongols, Persia, Arabia, Egypt, the Aztec, the Maya, et al. Last, I assume you're an American. If so, you have the institution of slavery to thank for your existence (as do I, since I'm mixed race, as are both my parents). The lineage that each of us has would never have come into existence without it; therefore, neither would you and I have come into existence. All things considered, I am glad my ancestors were enslaved here, and not the Caribbean or Brazil or Turkey or Saudi. As bad would be if our ancestors never been captured and our lineage had never left Africa.

He missed the main points ... the part about the so-called 'war on drugs' was aimed at villainizing black people and that Harry Anslinger was an open racist. His thought process is still the same today just used by others.

We should legalize all drugs. We should also get rid of all government funded/subsidized health care and social welfare programs. Free individuals should be able make their own choices on what they put in or do to their body. Free individuals should also be free from the effects of the choices people make.

I'm all about ending the drug war, with that money we could have social programs and free healthcare.

evie b You mean social programs and government ran healthcare payed for by taxpayers, not free. Paid for by property stolen from citizens by threat of imprisonment and death to pay for the strangers poor life decisions. I’d rather give my time and resources to my family and friends, how I see fit, not to support a government sanctioned monopoly.

@@ZO5150 true almost all support for social programs should end except for things like temporary unemployment or for people who are disabled

Ivan Ruvalcaba I think insurance, private charities and churches could fill that need. I do think that those who become disabled in service of government ( i.e. military, law enforcement, emergency services) should be compensated though.
