It’s been 10 years since China launched its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), an ambitious infrastructure project that aims to link Asia with Europe and Africa. It has involved countries across the globe, including sparsely populated Mongolia. Since then, Mongolia has seen an infrastructure boom as it seeks to go from landlocked to land-linked.
Previously, Mongolia had one main railroad that runs from Russia to China through the centre of the country and the capital, Ulaanbaatar. But a new branch line was built in just eight months. It’s part of about 900 kilometres of new rail lines that were built and put into operation last year alone. In this episode of CNA Correspondent, Olivia Siong travels across Mongolia to find out the impact of China’s Belt and Road Initiative on the country and its people.
