Thank you- concisely presented. Do you have a video explaining how provisioning works under the hood in Horizon 8 now that there is not a provisioning server and associated SQL DB?

Thank you for this explanation! Well put, and it's difficult to find documentation on this process. I do have the same question as some others, though - can I delete 'snap1' in your example once I confirm all instant clones in the pool are utilizing that new snap ('snap2') AND how do I confirm all instant clones are utilizing that new snap? Thanks again!!

Are you doing something wrong with our Instant Clone environment if we don't see the CpParent, CpReplica delete automatically like you described? We end up with orphaned instances from old snapshots and this create a bit of manual intervention and cleanup for us.

I've had that issue a few times. I usually just log into the connection server and use the iccleanup cmdlet to clean it up. Still would like to know why that happens though

@@snorlax42069 Depending on the version you are using, this may be Smart Provisioning. If it's 12 or less Instant Clones per ESXi, it will not create the parent (this is to save memory for smaller deployments)

Question. Can I delete the Snapshot 1 once all the IC are using the Snapshot 2?

replicas will be created on the same datastore where the parent vm resides.

During deployment operations when Replica VM is powered on, should Replica VM receive valid IP address or not? Template VM received valid IP address...

I can understand the need for the parent, the purpose being to manage shared memory, but I do not understand the need/purpose for the template or replica? What unique purpose do they serve? Why not just go from a Gold Snap to a parent and skip the template and replica?

Agree. The video is good but raises some questions. What I miss is indeed the purpose of each step and if each of these steps needs to be performed manually, or if it is being performed under the hood when you create an instant clone.

The Template would be the saved state (Gold image and snapshot; and remember that a snapshot is a point in time). The Golden image could have new snapshots on it where the template does not. Additionally, the replica becomes the read only location on storage where the parent cannot put everything into memory. So the IC will ask parent and if the parent doesn't have the page, it goes to the replica for it.
