There was a time when I thought the only way I could move up in my career was to leave behind the hospital environment where I love to work. I believed that after being a Clinical Research Coordinator (CRC) for a few years, there was no other options for growth at the site level, and the next obvious step was to leave the hospital for a Pharma or CRO where I could work as a CRA.
While Pharmaceutical companies and Contract Research Organizations (CRO) both pay well - and often much better than hospitals in Canada, there were certain reasons I didn't want to move to those settings. Firstly, I enjoyed a clinical environment with patient contact (coming from a nursing background myself), to the office environment of Pharma/CRO. Secondly, I enjoyed the job stability and security that came with not being in a private organization. Hospitals and hospital-affiliated research institutes in Canada are taxpayer or grant funded typically, and considered provincial orgs. Thirdly, I wanted to retail the benefits such as a traditional "pension" that came with being at the hospital site. And so I kept looking for opportunities to ask for a promotion within the same setting.
While majority of CRA roles are within CRO or Pharma, some of the bigger teams at the hospital or clinic levels can have Associate positions - especially when there are lots of projects to manage, team sizes are big and need someone to taken on supervision of students/RAs, when there are lots of national-scale physician-initiated studies that required central coordination and oversight (and monitoring even). This is also an important role which can taken on more analytical tasks such as planning study protocols, writing grants, manuscripts, data cleaning, data analysis and visualization, and more.
This video will be the first of a few where I share the details of my current role and experience - going from Clinical Research Coordinator to Clinical Research Associate. I hope you all enjoy it - and if you do, please don't forget to give it a thumbs up!
