I found using an umbrella company still let me have the contracting money with the benefits of employments such as pension, healthcare and furlough. It is difficult to find contracts though!

I’ve never used an umbrella company, but would be strongly tempted to try one on my next contract.

I did this in 1996 so it's nothing new. Never went back to perm even now living in SE Asia.

great story and tips! How do you go from w2 contract salary to permanent employment salary? Can you expect equivalent pay? I understand there are no or little benefits when the role is a contract... how can we figure out if the permanent offer is fair/ worth taking in comparison to the contract rate? Thank you!

Some good questions there. Honestly, I think you can only assess a role - whether contractor or perm - on it’s own merits. You need to look at everything - the benefits package, the location, the impact on your work/life balance. I mentioned that I took a pay rise for the Warwickshire job - but it was absorbed by the increased travel cost. And that doesn’t include the travel time involved. So, seriously, when juggling these options don’t just look at the salary - there are all sorts of costs. And never forget - you are trading your time (which can never be replaced) for the job - so try to find one you enjoy, even if it pays a little less.

I am confused, you set up a limited company and you deal with HR? So your contracts where inside IR35. Otherwise you should sell your services as a supplier and your client should send you a PO. This said. Thanks for your transparency and honesty. You don't see that often...

I was outside of IR35. My limited company was set up as most recruiters (at the time) wanted to have B2B relationships, so following the trend proved to be advantageous. My understanding currently (Feb 2023) is that this isn't the case anymore and that umbrella companies offer a better approach - though there are questions around my companies fees, payment schedules and reliability.

@@InfluentialPMO Thanks for your response. I am still confused. If it is B2B (business to Business) then you are a supplier and you receive a PO from your client. No HR. If HR is involved, then there is a contract which can be mistaken for a contract of employment, Thus all the issues and changes around IR35. I never understood the needs of an Umbrella companies. If you have a ltd you are employed by your ltd and you have a PAYEE. The Umbrella is only an additional middle man. Unless you want nothing to do with the redtape and paperwork. I cannot see why an umbrella is better than a ltd.
