Hi Guido. I'm Gerardo. It started for me in the 80's. As a child I was at my aunt's house a lot since she lived near by and baby sat. She had a blue glowing Marantz Reciever, Panasonic 8 track, Technics SL... Turntable, and Marantz Speakers. Oh the sound, the special smell of the equipment in the wood rack with the glass door, the shelves of vinyl and 8 tracks, and the dancing at the parties or when we were in the basement got me hooked. I was a toddler and realized the Hi-fi experience by 5 or 6. As a teen I made the same mistake with a Sony rack system my mom got me, but we returned it a week later. Lol then it was a Harmon Kardon pa2200 amp and Onkyo p304, carousel cd player and Yamaha tape deck and Klipsch speakers. Many years later B&w and Rotel. Now Focal Sopra No3's and second system with Kanta No2's. Very special. Thanks for sharing.❤️

Wasn't aware of hi-fi at all. When I was 14 a friend and I rode our bikes to the grand opening of a hi end hi-fi store. Heard a pair of giant horn loaded speakers with tube amps and probably a turntable in a large high ceilinged room and I was hooked. The album was Magical Connection by Gabor Szabo, and it had just come out.

Most important is as mentioned how much better the sound becomes on true hifi equipment. Let your ears be the guide. If it sounds better it is better. Don't believe all the reviews many are wrong, find a place that will let you have a listen to the gear first, take along some of your favourite albums you know really well and try this gear out. If you don't have bucket loads of money, be careful not to listen to the pie in the sky out of your reach gear, otherwise great sounding more cost effective units will be ignored. But be sure your getting a real upgrade from what you already have.
@erwindewit4073

And here's the thing. I realised that that only really applies to audiophiles. Others will also recognise that the sound is really good on your system, but it doesn't do anything more for them. My mother is a perfect example....

My story. I got a "portable" stereo (it weighed 30 pounds) for Christmas 1966. I was eleven years old. It had detachable speakers. (I kept the records that I got, and I listened to one yesterday.) I wanted my stereo to be its best, so I took the loudspeakers and put some housing insulation inside. I listened to it for years. When I went away to college and graduate school, it got put on hold. Writing papers, taking exams, listening to lectures. After that, when I was teaching, it was just the opposite. Grading papers and exams, writing lectures. Now that I have retired, my passion comes again to the fore. I am not a rich man. My system is good enough for my limited budget. Not the best and not the worst. I do small tweaks. A mono cartridge. A turntable mat. A record stabilizer. A protractor. Gel cleaner for my stylus. A carbon fibre brush. I guess I am a wanna-be-audiophile! Have a good weekend.

@Saint Michael, you and I are about the same age. By “portable” stereo, do you mean the ones that looked like small suitcases, where the turntable folded down and the speakers were on either side? If so, that was also my first stereo, except that I got the budget model (around the same time as you got yours) as the speakers on mine weren’t detachable. Being one of the older boys in the neighborhood, I was the first one with a stereo. Years later, my younger brother confessed that he and his friends used to sneak into my bedroom when I was out and listen to my 45s and LPs. Fond memories. Stay safe.

@@jjquinn2004 Mine was Silvertone (My parents always shopped at Sears). It was peacock blue on the fold-down turntable and speaker covering. It was ivory white the rest of it. The speakers were five and half inches across, and when they were fully extended, they were 12 feet apart.

I used to get the Stereo Review Buyer's Guide magazine every year in the Fall when they hit the store shelves (1970's-1990's) and go through every single page looking at specs and prices, then putting on paper the ultimate "Stereo System" to show my friends. I remember the prices being insanely high and fully un-obtainium as far as my wallet was concerned but it did make me seek out these devices to hear them in Hi Fi stores or some of my wealthier friend's parents homes, etc, to see just how good they sounded. When I first heard the Infinity IRS V speakers in person once I was totally blown away. I still can't afford them but at least someone was generous enough to let me listen to them in person. It is a wonderful journey into audio and I never get tired of it. Thanks for sharing your personal adventures.

Wow, Guido, awesome! Very personal and inspirational! 👍 When I was just getting started on my Audiophile journey over 40 years ago when I was about 20 or so, a friend of mine was really into Prog, Fusion, and Jazz, so... I was immediately turned on to Weather Report, Santana/Mahavishnu, Brian Auger, etc., etc... At the same time, like you, I was fascinated with all this offbeat stuff like Brian Eno, Robert Fripp, King Crimson (probably one of my very favourite groups along with Adrian Belew/Tony Levin) Yes, etc... So, I got a nice creative start which has of course by now expanded by orders of magnitude to Zeppelin, Goth, Industrial, Tripp/Hopp, Metal, LOTS of Miles Davis, and so on. But, I will say that kind of a start definitely got things going! 😁

Very recognisable story Guido! It really is (oh, Bas, nice to meet you). I started with a record player in a box with speaker in the lid from the 1950s when I was 4. It was old and always broke down, but it really did start there. From there, old speakers, half decent amplifier (my uncle gave that to me). When that broke down, I went for the obligatory double well cassette deck boombox. Wow, that was such a lot worse! Which is when I realised that quality really does make a difference (for me). So, as a student I used a set of old Goodmans from the parents of a friend of mine, their old receiver and the CD player I had just bought. I really liked that! In the years after, I got my parents' B&W DM330i loudspeakers and my same uncle gave me a (broken) 1970s Sony. So got the Sony fixed and WOW! So, got a cassette deck (had a lot of cassettes from the boombox era) and my mother gave me their 1977 Technics SL-3320 turntable. That did open my eyes! Still no cables, but a lot of enjoyment! Then university and I blew up the Sony in a party and switched to an X series Sansui (a great amp from the 1980s). When i started working, the first thing I did was to see what the cable fuss was all about. Lots of people told me it was nonsense, others heard a difference. So I tried (Ixos, still have them). My conclusion was that you needed to be deaf not to hear the difference! So, speaker cable. Again, that difference! Now, in the past 8 years, I built my current system. Too expensive for my income really, but eventually, it's finished. From your video, I built my own power cable and powerstrip (from quality professional gear (Martin Kaiser) with copper backplane) and Nexans cable (Dutch made, high amp cable). Interesting difference. Also bought a used audio rack (again, from your videos). Everything made a difference! For now, it's great.And it's such a long story, I would completely understand if you completely ignored it ;)

Salve Guido, nice meeting you and that was a nice story. Things that influenced my Audio Journey where a Philips Tube amp + AD9710 speaker (all mono but what a sound) my grandfather gave to me when I was young, then buying a Lenco L133 and building a RIAA amp to replace my old TT with ceramic cartridge. Then later going out clubbing and finding out that JBL and Fostex sounded much better than most of the other stuff you would find. Audio for me was always a derivative from my main hobby which is Electronics, so coming from that angle I would never upgrade cables, only electronics and speakers. I had a break because Electronics became my profession. But with the resurgence of the LPs (I do not like the word Vinyl) I have picked up my old hobby again but only vintage HiFi. And now I am enjoying your channel so keep up the good work, thank you for the great content.

Dear Guido, thanks for sharing this journey. It was quite a reminiscing time for me, since I believe that our ages and experiences with music, development of taste and understanding of gear came at very similar times and life experiences looks like. I grew up fascinated by music, the experience of dealing with a record, playing it and hearing the subtleties in a track. After many frustrations with 90s recordings, 2000s crappy equipment, I have been finally able to set up my system back again at high quality at playing all my lps, cassettes that I’ve carefully kept from early age. Music was expensive and in many ways the expansion of CD's lengthened the life of Cassette tape as it was a cheep way of experiencing Hi Fi, tweeking the heads azimuth on cheep cassette players !

You're a good guy Guido, I am happy I finally know your name, thank you. My story is kind of wild if I do say so myself. I was primarily a athlete when I was growing up so I was listening to the popular stuff they were playing on the radio at the time which ranged from Pink Floyd to disco, I know, a real sophisticate. I was very close with my uncle who just happened to be Frank Zappa's manager. We moved to California for my senior year in 1978 so I spent a lot of time with my uncle. I met Frank for the first time in the studio and we hit it off even though I was only 17. The funny thing was our due discussions were mostly over deep geo political issues, everyone used to laugh at us Many people would be surprised to learn how brilliant Frank was, also pretty conservative in many ways. Frank bought me my first home speakers which were JBL 4311b monitors which were in most of the studios at the time and that was the start. I still own them even though they donn't get much use these days but am emotionally attached and would never part with them. I actually got into high end car audio first and put together my home system to record cassettes for my car. Unfortunately I am cursed with the pursuit of excellence in everything I do so its been a tireless chase. I was lucky my sister was a divisional supervisor for the biggest record store in the US so between my uncle and sister I got a incredible start to my record collection which is now numbering around 10,000 records. Sadly I am just as passionate about cars, motorcycles, guns and watches, man collecting is real pain in the a..!!!! I think it's in you to want better sound. I had an Awia system it even played surround sound for movies in the 90,s my brother came home with a pioneer A400 amp and a denon cd player I thought what has he brought and thinking that wont be better than my all bells and flashing light graffic equalizers system and then I tried it with my Awia speakers I said do you want to swap for my Awia system he said ok and the rest as they say is history .

Guido, another great video. People learn about Hi Fi when they start buying their own equipment and making their own mistakes. Is there any online courseware you recommend for those who want to learn more, how did you accumulate all that knowledge, was it by trial and error, research ( I think you have hinted at this). How do you do your research?
@anadialog
3 жыл бұрын
Uuuh! A course would be great! I would follow it as well! Thanks but I am just a guy crazy for hifi. There is a wealth of people out there that know much much more than me. Yes, I did experimented, i usually go to the bottom of something that is intriguing and do some 'research' mainly on the web but also books, magazines and...people! That is best source! ;-)

I became a audiophile when I was 18 years old and heard Revox A77 reel too reel tape with a tube pre amplifier electrostatic speakers with a B-50 Audio Pro subwoofer in a audiopile store in stockholm is early 1980's -I always refer to that experience when listening to music ,even compressed mp3 which can come in many variations -eg variable mp3 is the way for me but mp3 is pretty much passe -440 kbps Ogg might be the lowest I can call a cd-copy , maybe Im alone but 320kbps mp4 arnt good enough (spotify).
Hi!, thanks for the video. I was audiophile back in the 90s and early 2000, however I decided to exchange my priorities: "first music, second quality". My favorite media is R2R, good sound and a pleasure look the reels spinning in any of my decks (own too much)

So do you have a listening room , since when i heard at my best I could heard eco from walls ( In my bedroom as 20 year old )and how the interior dampened the music , From what I see from your background with all the cds and vinyl should that impact the music ? and I guess you sit in a layback sofa /couch -with of without carpet ( which affects the sound) , tapesty affcts the sound so does windows and humidity on rainy days or frost.

R E S P E C T & G R A T I T U D E for your MISSION on planet earth! Having watched several of your videos, allow me to disagree with you on one point: You are a music lover not an audiophile, thanks heaven! "Audiophilia" is the distraction robbing people of their love of music; they end-up listening to components and equipments. 40+ active years in the music and audio (manufacturing) industries, I can humbly say that there are some manufacturers who are getting it right, while others....oh well! One day, those guru-engineers will finally understand that they cannot redo the laws of physics. Instead of listening to live music, they are too busy chopping decibels into minute pieces making sure that the distortion of their products stays below sub-zero levels. After all, music is all that matters. This hobby requires common-sense and frugality. Keep the revival alive; it will help stop the abuse and the broad daylight robberies. Keep on educating people so they can become wiser. If you restore your L-10, shy away from the so-called audio-grade components. For example, industrial grade components like Panasonic FC or FM capacitors (just to mention one brand among many out there) will always perform better than the "exotic" ones at a fraction of their price. Enjoy your music.

You've convinced yourself it was a linear and rational decision. That's what the audio companies want you to believe. but it's actually because you want to be better than those you associate with, whether that is other people, or yourself. You're chasing a dragon, that doesn't exist.
