Thank you for this video - much needed. I too am using a half-mask respirator (which I also initially had bought for spray painting) with p100 filters (Honeywell 5500). My wife luckily now has the Honeywell Blue 1H (which now seem to be unavailable unfortunately). Was looking for info on best cleaning methods, as I clean the masks before every use. I remove the cartridges and set them aside, then hand wash the mask and straps with dish soap and lukewarm water (should probably use hotter). Then clean cartridges with a paper towel and dish soap.

Same here, I have the full face respirator. I also have the half mask respirators. I was using just disposable masks up until now. Not a lot of people wear the reusable respirators in public so it is a bit intimidating at first to wear. Masks are pretty much normalized though, so it isn't THAT much of a step up. I tried it, wore my full face shield respirator, and yeah you get looks, but not as much as I expected. It's strange times when you can walk around in a crazy hazmat mask like that and barely even get second glances! lol.

I've been trying to ask the question with suppliers etc "can you vacuum the filter intake or will it compromise them?" I typically have to tap the filters out on a hard surface to get rid of Blown insulation & drywall dust but maybe the life can be extended for at least half the life of the active carbon once the package is open by doing a vacuum job on it. I would think if you can match the vacuum suction strength with the typical lung strength it should in theory be safe but I'd like to know the facts on this particular method.

I checked with 3m. Many doctors and nurses are using these masks to filter out covid. Obviously there is a flow outward that does not filter. These cartridges will last an entire pandemic 3M says. So your good with just the one set. However there is disinfecting and cleaning. This video uses a little dish soap to clean along with water. Like he says this is to prevent other bacteria growing. I have an infection first hand from not cleaning and it is bad. So please clean. As for medical and normal going outside use with covid, you still need to dissenfect. You can use certain vapor machines and can use a bleach mixture with water and UV wands. I bought UV wands on amazon. 3M says if you dip the mask in bleach, that after about 30 times the reusable mask is no longer good. So I would avoid the bleach and no one has the special vapor machines at home. You can also wait a minimum of 3 days for plastic and rubber and covid should die off, then clean with soap and water. If your a doctor and nurse, either get a few of the masks and rotate, or get a UV wand. 3M stated you should clean as in soap and water after every use. Good luck!

William is right, these masks are designed to filter out dust, fumes and dirt. If they were used in a dirty dusty workplace you may only get a few hours out a mask, but if working in an ER etc. the chrtages should last the entire pandemic. With that said, if you find it difficult breathing it time to change filters. The recommended Way to decon these masks is to remove the filters and then place the mask into a bucket of water and soap mixture . Note the warter has to be at least over 50 degrees. The mask should be then put into a bucket of bleach and water. The filters should be wiped down NOT PUT INTO THE WATER! Things may be rated in a different way in the US, than the UK, P1 is the lowest rating for filters. They then go up in protection to P2 this is equal to N95 in the US and P3 is the highest rating. I would be concerned about removing the very fine rubber elements that stop the intake of air. This is the only gate controling the intake and breathing out of air and if these are damaged the seal fit of negative and postive pressure may be affected.

If you use it on a daily basis ,you should disinfect it every day. Proper donning and doffing of PPEs should be done at all times. Doffing of PPEs is probably the most dangerous part of the process. Because the virus can stay in the air for almost 10 minutes, particles can stick to surfaces of the respirator. Upon returning home,you should avoid bringing your respirator inside your house. Do the disinfecting or cleaning in a seperate garage or preferably not inside your house as you might bring the virus at home. In Asia especially those hit by SARs pandemic almost 20 years ago ,many prefer using disposable face masks (N95 and 3 ply surgical masks) because they can easily be disposed off prior to entering one's home. In the longer term, reusable respirators are far less efficient and not the most logistically sustained solution.
@mattizzle81
4 жыл бұрын
@@aumarigan I have the opposite opinion just from my experience so far. Disposable N95 masks, the real ones, not knockoffs/Chinese made crap are in very short supply right now. I had a good stash of them, like a really good supply and they've all been used at least once by now. They say in an emergency you can use them up to 5 times but that is not ideal. This pandemic is looking to not be a short term thing. We are only in the early stages and it could go on for a good while. The reusable respirators have a better seal, better filtration, and the filters when used in a non-dusty environment will last almost indefinitely, "for the duration of a pandemic" they say. So for me, they are really the only viable solution unless some MAJOR supply is introduced for N95 masks.

Friend! You need to put it on a clean towel after you wash it plus, it will be better to wash your hands and mask with hot water, the virus can't survive above 58 degrees celcius. And what about alcohol? This can work too, don't you think?
@thehvachacker
4 жыл бұрын
I did place it onto a clean towel, soap and warm water kills the virus. Hot water might work better. It’s mostly fat protecting a protein cell. Alcohol works also. I would avoid bleach or spraying with Lysol. I had to take a set of cartridges and have them sitting from spraying lysol on it. I felt I was breathing in Lysol afterwards. I heard vinegar is useless against the virus. Yet I’m cleaning the mask mostly to kill bacteria that forms from trapped moisture from breathing. Why I only used soap and water. The best disinfectant I believe would be UV light.

Here’s what we found. Virus particles don’t exist alone The science of mask functionality gets really small, really fast. The unit of measurement here is microns - 1/1000th of a millimeter. The size-based argument against N95 laid out in this claim assumes mask filtering works something like water flowing through a net - particles in the water smaller than the net opening pass through, while larger items don’t. But the physics involved don’t work like that at all. The COVID-19 particle is indeed around 0.1 microns in size, but it is always bonded to something larger. “There is never a naked virus floating in the air or released by people,” said Linsey Marr, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Tech who specializes in airborne transmission of viruses.
