It took me 3 years for Bachelor's, 3 years for Master's and 5 years for PhD. Things weren't sailing smoothly for me to obtain the master's and phd but with a little of patience, things worked out in the end.

I finished my bachelor's in 4, applied for PhD programs directly, got accepted at a nice school, and thought things would go smoothly. Unfortunately, I couldn't travel because of the pandemic and had to defer my studies a year 😭 really hope I don't have to defer again this year, that would be too much 😭😭😭

Haha your experience is so similar to mine! I finished my BSc back in 2012, decided I AM DONE WITH EDUCATION! Worked in a boring boring job for a few years, decided to do a MSc end of 2015 and here I am, 1 month before the beginning of my PhD 😂 genuinely didn't think I would get it so despite being very happy and proud of myself, there is definitely a big part of me thinking WHAT HAVE I GOT MYSELF INTO?!?!?! 😱😱😱 I have a more specific question re the process, given that I am literally about to start, if that is okay? My PhD is fully funded for 3 years so I am expecting to have to fend for myself in the writing up year. However in your experience do you know of many people that manage to complete within 3 - 3.5 years? I am just sort of worried it will drag on if I have to work full time during the write up period!! Eep!!
@joolzzenda
7 жыл бұрын
I don't know of anyone who's submitted around the 3 year mark but plenty at about 3.5 years. If you can save any money during the next few years so you don't need to get a job immediately then do that. I've had a few friends that wrote up whilst working; they got it done but it wasn't fun. But exciting times! I hope it all goes well for you :D

It feels a bit loud to shout it off the rooftops of the public internet, but: I submitted two weeks ago. Awaiting viva. I was never funded very well so my part-time jobs resulted in extreme time-management-skill-development. Top tip though: do not leave your bibliography till the end. Update it once a month. I just found all these PhD KZitemrs this week (blissfully browsing the internet for no reason instead of preparing for said viva). I never thought of filming it all. Hindsight! It'll be cool to look back on, once you're finally done with everything : )

joolzzenda Awesome thanks ! To be more clear, I'm only asking because I'm going through a tough time with anxiety which was most likely caused by the pressure of being amongst the best students in the best business school in my country (academic achievement stress), so yeah. If it makes you feel any better, I guess its VERY common.

It is so common! It really is ridiculous. I really do want to make a video about it but I need to do quite a bit of research first to make sure I don't accidently spread any more misinformation. The last thing I want to do is give some bad advice.

joolzzenda thank you, can I ask another one, how about the grades, does everyone needs excellent grades ?
@joolzzenda
7 жыл бұрын
Again it will depend on where you're applying, but you'll definitely need decent grades. I needed a minimum of 60% in my masters to be accepted for my PhD program. For most UK masters a pass is 50% and distinction (top grade) is 70%. As long as you can show interest and ability you should be eligible. Sorry for the vague answers but there are no hard and fast rules I'm afraid

It's worth noting that in Scotland we have different names for the courses and our 5th and 6th years of Academy (High School in England) are different. The GCSE equivalent was Standard Grade (when I did it, it's now called National 4/5) and Higher for 5th year and Higher or Advanced Higher for 6th year. A levels are kind of similar to taking a Higher and Adv Higher. For degrees, Scottish Honours are 4 years.
@joolzzenda
7 жыл бұрын
I didn't know degrees are 4 years in Scotland. There can be so many variations in education structure even from school to school. I know quite a few people who went to school in the UK but did IB rather than A-levels or Highers. And don't even get me started on the differences between all the exam boards! For a fairly small country we have a lot of different systems, it's kind of bizarre :)

I don't know if you will be able to answer this and feel free to disregard it if you don't want to. I've been looking into doing a PhD after I finish Uni, depending on grades and the like, but I've come across something that has stumped me. Many (for my field at least) are asking for a proposal as part of the application process which I've no idea how to tackle, for starters I haven't got a concrete idea of what research field that I would go into and also I don't know anything (in depth) about any of these fields, so how am I going to give a proposal for a project if I don't know anything? I suspect I know the answer to this but if you can give any insight that would be great.
@joolzzenda
7 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I applied for a PhD that was already decided on so I just had to interview for it so I don't have any experience of writing a proposal. I would imagine that they wouldn't want too explicit detail as the project's direction normally changes quite a bit during the first year.

I'm doing an undergraduate degree in physics right now! And next year I hopefully will be doing climate research in grad school. Interesting what you said about the funding thing, though, here in Canada most science (and I think all physics) thesis-based Masters programs are funded by the school, with extra funding available from the government if you're good enough
@joolzzenda
7 жыл бұрын
An excellent choice in courses if I do say so myself :P It's awesome that you get Masters funding, I'm very proud of Canada right now. This year student loans for masters students were introduced for English students (so that wouldn't have helped me, stupid Wales) so we're getting there slowley :)

what about papers? How many papers do you have to publish during your PhD? And what about IF?
@joolzzenda
7 жыл бұрын
It is different at every university. You'll have to ask people in your college/school about what is expected for you. Other PhD students will probably have a good idea, otherwise your supervisor or administrator will know. My school in my university is very relaxed about it. There's no pressure to publish but it's recommended to publish one or two papers before you complete. It just helps your case for your thesis if some elements have already been peer reviewed. I hope that helps :)

Hi, just wondering if you know whether after doing an undergraduate masters, you can go straight on to a PhD or whether you need to do a graduate masters first. Also, did you have a jobs while doing your PhD, if not, how did you afford everything? Great video, thanks!
@joolzzenda
7 жыл бұрын
+Eve Munday I know one person who went from undergraduate to phd without a masters. It's less common though but it can happen. I was funded by both a UK research council and a studentship with an organisation. This covered my tuition and gave me enough money to not need to work. Most people find funding similar to this since its quite hard to self fund but I do know one or two people who managed it. Not sure I could have done it though!

Hi, I am back to this video again after one year, I planned to do the research in the filed of organizational behavior, however, I met a excellent supervisor and he suggested me to switch to his research filed which is financial forecasting. @joolzzenda

I think that unless you intend to have a career in academia or you know for a fact that a PhD is needed in the career you are interested in, do not do a PhD. It was a huge waste of my time and ruined my mental health which I am still recovering from. Of all the people I know who did a PhD only one didn't have a mental health crisis during the process and only 2 are working in a job that actually uses their PhD. Stop at masters, it's not worth it

I didn't think I was going to after by AS exams when I got an E on one maths paper. I needed that as motivation to actually push myself, re-sat the paper and got an A. Keep at it and use whatever you need to motivate yourself. For me the fear of failure or proving someone wrong works wonders (my physics teacher told me I'd fail my A Level so I studied it at uni and got a first, showed her!) :P
