Hey Tom, I’ve been watching your channel for over three years now - you were the very first person to inspire me right when I starting out with photography, and I’ve seen you on all your highs and lows. I experience them too, as I’m sure does everyone. I just wanted to say thank you for the last three years. I still love going on adventures with you, whether it’s Iceland or the north east on a drab day. Your images still inspire me and you’re just an all round great guy. And the music you use, the piano one - just awesome! This what makes your videos special, you are not trying to be, you ARE who you are. So I'm always looking forward to your videos and no matter what - I will enjoy every single one, otherwise I wouldn't be your subscriber for such a long time. That’s interesting. I am feeling the same way as Thomas. I took a break. Told a friend I was in a photography slump and she said well why don’t you shoot things that you normally wouldn’t, like macro. So I did just that. Taking a break and not trying so hard when you are feeling that way helps too.

2020 has become my macro year too. I bought a slider and extension tubes and have been doing stacks of like 80-100 images. Patience and sometimes you get the most wonderful results. I have discovered that there are macro subjects just everywhere if you look hard enough.
@Dug6666666

Its good to have alternate subject matter when inspiration or circumstances fluctuate. Mine has been urban, particularly industrial areas. In fact I have yet to go back to landscape. It would be hard I imagine to stray too far though when you have established a landscape viewer base. I bought a macro lens for the same reason. I think its a huge bonus to photograph what your eye naturally wonders towards, its not fine detail as it turns out for me it seems.
@will9357
3 жыл бұрын
I did the same and finally bought a long macro lens, and it took my local environment (I live near Houston, TX) from 'near unshootable' thickets everywhere I look, to having pretty decent potential. This area still isn't the easiest landscape to shoot, but I tend to get a couple shots everyday, even when I'm out doing other tasks.

Sometimes just watching your videos during a lunch break has really helped me push myself. Tom what l like about you is that you walk the walk, as well as the talk. You get out there and take pictures. To many other KZitem photographers lately are just talking the talk. Their whole video is increasingly becoming some sort of philosophical monologue about photography, and their photos are increasingly becoming bland. Talking the talk, but no walk. When most people go to galleries its the image that captures the eye, not the little note beside the image explaining the 'philosophy' behind the image. Keep taking photos Tom it's what you're brilliant at.
@freetibet1000
3 жыл бұрын
I agree! For the audience it’s always about the image itself. If it speaks to us, or not. Unfortunately, with the Internet we have all been bombarded with millions of images by now and it’s a real challenge to come back to that “fresh” look on an image again. For me, photography have become more of a tool for me to bring my mind back to be in the moment again and the outcome has become less important, as a result. As a result I still thoroughly enjoy my photography because its more of an exploration than bringing home just another “trophy”. Does that make sense?
@vincephillips4331
3 жыл бұрын
There's nothing wrong in explaining a journey, and what motivated a photographer to take an image, and this is what l like about your channel is that you do that beautifully, but you don't try to dress up your image if you're not happy with it. No matter how hard it was to be obtained. The trouble is it's when bland images are coupled with some sort of motivational philosophy on how it was created. For me if the image is bland no amount of philosophical chit chat about the image is going to fill the cracks in the photos weaknesses. The image is the bottom line, and not the words.

All photographers go through these ups and downs, specially when conditions are not the best to shoot regardless of your style or dicipline. But you must consider that it's part of growing as an artist. Everytime you feel down is because you need to step up, move, innovate, and think about what you are creating to make it better.

The sense of “struggle” may come from the fact that you want something that you don’t have at that moment. For me, a feeling of creativity arises when I leave my mind completely open and don’t expect anything specific to happen. My way of photography is to just put on my rubber boots and walk right out and see what happens! No expectations. If something appears that intrigues me, I take picture of it. If nothing intriguing happens, no big deal! I think, sometimes we are afraid that maybe we will never be able to feel that creative rush again. But the human mind is so changeable that I’m pretty sure it will happen again. The problem only comes when we want to experience a certain thing “on demand” sort of speak, isn’t it?

Hi Tom. I could really relate to this video. I love your candid honesty and it reflects how many of us have felt after a terrible 2020. Keep up the good work and I'm sure your mojo will return ! You are inspirational and kept me motivated through the year ☺

I can totally agree with everything you say about the time of year, the restrictions and the lack of motivation. Even more frustrating is that every one of your pictures looks amazing! Happy New Year Thomas.

This video struck home to me more than one could imagine. It was slap in the face for me to wake up, suck it up and go out and do something...anything. Thank you Thomas. I have been with you for a long time and look forward to even more amazing journeys in years to come. Take care and forge on.

I hear you and I relate. I'm not a professional photographer but a passionate amateur one and I had to postpone my first big photography trip this year. Highs and lows! Highs and lows, Thomas. Keep on opening your mind to other subjects and keep on inspiring us to do it also. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings. Happy new year!

Well summed up on how a lot of us are feeling at the moment, I love to travel but its all on hold so I look to my local surroundings plus with the short daylight hours I bring subjects into the house for more detailed/macro images. Its great to set up a little studio set on a table, control the light and get up close. Always enjoy your content and the inspiration and enthusiasm you deliver, even when things get tough. Fingers crossed for 2021, happy new year to you.

I honestly appreciate these kinds of videos of yours more than the others, if anything. Lows in photography happen all the time and can be quite brutal, especially this year. I think sharing that is brave and gives people a more accurate idea of what it's really like!

Tom, I watch your videos all the time; this is one of my very favorites - for reasons I can't quite pinpoint. Thank you for sharing your struggles and the two beautiful photographs you created in their midst. I face the same issues all the time; nice to know someone whose work I admire goes through the same thing. Here's to a better 2021! All the best, Jeff

Never apologise Tom, I think the reason you connect with so many is due to you being authentic and genuine. Therefore we are here for your lows and your highs. I completely empathise with your current predicament and experience similar feelings, I recently took a break, partly new job, mostly frustration! I discovered your channel just I started in photography and it's been incredibly inspiring and helpful. Whichever direction you decide to go! Do what's best for you!

Tom, you have been an inspiration throughout and dull days/phases are so common in all our lives. The fact that you went out and shot something itself is commendable and it isn’t that bad either. Sometimes we should take photos for ourselves as well, to make us happy. Much love and take care ❤️

Really appreciate that you wear your heart on your sleeve, do what ever feels right, I will still be watching. My biggest error this year is to have not really touched my camera since April. My error, but I haven’t had the motivation as normally motorsport is my drive and have struggled to direct this energy to static subjects. Thanks for a great channel and look forward to seeing what you creste in 2021. Happy New Year.
