Are you trying to build a home studio to record youtube videos or a course? Let me help.
Using this setup, I've recorded over 70 (maybe 80?) videos completely alone. Each video had a detailed script, that I had to recite word for word, too! So let me show you how I did it, so you can too!
CAMERA & TRIPOD
If you're recording yourself, you need a camera and a tripod. There's no getting around it! I used the Sony a6400 and a 35mm lens. This lens gives a more professional look, but if you want something more casual, try a wide-angle lens instead. I mounted my camera on a tripod and connected it to my computer using a tether cable. Connecting it to my computer lets me control all of the settings from my desk, AND hit record, which saves me so much time.
💡 SETTINGS -- Sony a6400 with 35mm lens at f/2.2, 1/50, ISO 250
TELEPROMPTER
Using a teleprompter saved me! There's no way I could have memorized and recited all of these scripts. Instead, I purchased a small teleprompter rig that I connected to my tripod. You place an iPad in front and your camera at the back. This allows you to read your script while looking directly into the camera. LIFE-CHANGING! To make it easier to remove my camera, I added a small quick-release plate to the rig.
To use your ipad as a teleprompter, you'll need to get an app. I tried a teleprompter app that was recommended by a ton of youtubers, and hated it. It's supposed to track your voice and automatically advance the script... but it doesn't work. So I ended up using a more simple app that you can remotely control with a bluetooth keyboard.
MICROPHONE
Your mic really makes a huge difference in the quality of your videos. I used a vlogging mic and mounted it on a c-stand about 1.5 feet in front and above me. BUT, any microphone will be better than the one in your camera. For this KZitem video, I just used my desk mic. No matter what mic you choose, make sure it's as close to you as possible for the best quality.

LIGHTING
As a photographer, I love lighting. But, I have to say it's probably the least important for this setup. Natural light is incredible and if you're just filming for one day, use that. But my project went on for over 6 months, so I needed to maintain consistent lighting no matter when I filmed. That's why I chose artificial lighting! I started with one video light in a softbox. I move it as close to me as I can without it being seen on camera. Then, I noticed my background looked really dark, so I added one more light to brighten it. That's it!
💡 SETTINGS -- Main light at 75% and background light at 35%. Both at 5600k white balance.
