Great series of vids. I started playing regularly for the first time in years and could still play but had no distance. I was carrying a 3 wood a lame 190 consistently. I accidentally found the leak on a 106 degree Dallas day when I hadn't eaten and felt like I was going to faint. My arms were feeling like rubber and the club felt heavy. I had 250 in on a par 5, thought I'd be about 40 yards short. I whipped that club through with those fatigued arms and I ended up pin high after the ball rolled through 20 yards of 3-inch rough. There's a balance between control and letting the arms turn to rope in the mix for those wondering why they can't get any distance it seems.

Sure, I can ask him that! I would say to just feel wide in your takeaway. That’s the only way you’ll be able to get your left shoulder over the right knee. Thanks so much for the kind words man! I’m glad you found the channel and are enjoying the content. Zach is the man. Best instructor I’ve ever had and trust entirely him with my golf game. Watch some of the original video where we focus on club path and club face. Those are the two we look at the most. Of course, carry distance is important and then evaluating the stopping power which is a combination of spin and launch. He wants me at 5 degrees in to out for my path, and my face should be 2.5degrees open to target (splitting my target and club path). Yeah, we had to scramble to get indoors for this lesson because of a hail storm outside, and had no idea the glare was blocking the carry number. That’s why I kept calling out the carry in the top left of the screen with subtitles

9/10 golfers show up to a first lesson with an outside in path. Somewhere in the range of -4° to -10° to the left. Obviously what they are doing isn’t working otherwise they wouldn’t be here. Most of them strike the outside of the ball. A big key is striking the inside of the ball. In order to do that we need a positive path that is inside out. It’s amazing how much distance and control people gain by getting a positive path. The reason I like people to exaggerate is that they go back to a negative path very quickly. Learning a positive path allows people to gain full understanding and awareness of the golf club and eventually have the ability to hit all 9 shots. High, medium, and low. Left, right, straight.

Welcome to the channel, my friend! Zach is an amazing coach. If you watch my very first lesson with him (Video is titled “The BEST golf lesson I’ve ever taken- how to hit a draw”) it’ll give you some context. My natural tendency is to swing over the top. I’ve worked really hard to start swinging from the inside but when the nerves kick in, your natural tendencies will begin to come back! So that 9.5 in to our swing will never ever make it to the course. He ideally wants me at 5, and if I get tense and nervous, it’ll come back to 2-3. He learned how to teach the golf swing from Hank Haney and the push draw is the shot shape they believe in!

Hi there! Honestly, not very good right now. As you’re seeing, I’m getting an extra 10 yards of roll with an 8 iron, and what you didn’t see was an extra 15-20 yards with 6-5 irons. I’m not seeing this a whole lot on the course, but I’m certainly not holding a lot of greens either. I think of the next steps is getting fit for the right shafts. I respectfully disagree with Zach here. The idea of shifting the club face during the swing doesn't sit well with me, it seems error prone. In my view, if you can initiate the swing with a square club face, it should be possible to maintain that squareness through to the finish without purposeful adjustments along the way. If that's difficult, I'd argue that it may be more a matter of tempo than technique. But that's just my opinion. On another note, I noticed something in your follow-through: you seem a bit compact or bunched up. I was taught that your chest should finish facing the target at the end of your swing and that you should be standing upright at that point.
@ErndogGolf
Жыл бұрын
You may be taught a different swing. With this style of swing, if you’re square very early you won’t have loft. The release of the club and getting the arms and hand is what’s producing your speed with this swing. What a lot of guys are doing on tour right now is a bit of the opposite. They square at the top and rotate through the ball. It’s just hard for an average person to do and requires a lot of mobility. I agree about my follow through! In the last lesson with Zach, we work on my release and keeping my balance at finish!

Erndog reminds me of my younger self. As you started focusing on golf, you wanted to get everything in the swing correct. You hit balls. You hit more balls. You worked on the game. You got better. You developed a groove with the swing at a certain pace that was comfortable to you. Your scores kept improving so subconsciously you know that you can post your normal scores and are comfortable with that pace of swing. An instructor starts telling you to push yourself. You discover that your body CAN respond to the new pace but it's tough to trust. It works in a controlled environment, but the subconscious is a powerful thing. You go to the course and the first few times your try this, your subconcious doesn't trust it and the results make you feel uncomfortable. You have to fight it for awhile before your subconscious and trust align with your faster movement. Trust me -- been there, done that! 🤣 You're making progress, Ernie. Keep it up!!!!! The progress led me on to multiple Texas state amateurs, US amateurs, Mid Ams, etc. over the years. You have a lot of talent and can get there too if you keep working at it.

I like the "closed shift of weight", as you mentioned! For years my left shoulder was moving out and around (just a little) during the weight shift. Bottom line, that killed distance, accuracy, and happiness :). Keep up the good work!!

I love your rapport with Zach. The most valuable lesson I've learned watching these videos is to speak up and tell the instructor when you're concerned that doing what they say will lead to bad habits. Often times instructors are getting you to feel extremes so you can find the middle but you may not understand that as a student. For example years ago, I was using my arms too much and not rotating my body so my swing coach had me set my wrists and arms early and rotate through using the legs and body to release the club. After doing that for months, I was holding on too much and not allowing my arms to rotate at all. I was so confused and it took me a long time to realize that there is a middle ground. I've noticed in a couple videos you tell Zach that you're scared what he is telling you to do will get the right shoulder rotating too early causing the right to left swing path to return. He's demonstrated how it won't if you do it the right way. I know this will save you so much time and headache down the road. Thanks for the great videos.

Hi Ern, new viewer here and now new subscriber. I've been hitting a wimpy slice for months which has ruined my game. This video has been a revelation. Popped up the range tonight and I'm hitting solid draws again. The back to the target, left shoulder right knee is the key for me. Thanks so much for posting and huge thanks to Zach !

Hello Erndog, I am new to your channel. I am also relatively new to the game of golf. I really like this video, it gives concrete details of the swing. Which is my biggest concern. I would like to take a lesson with Zach, unfortunately, I live in California. I would like some help with my game and it has been difficult finding an instructor that I can understand. I'll check out your other videos. Thank you.

Hey man thanks for the shout out! I actually went out the next day and shot an 81. The weird thing was I felt like that game was better than the 77. Golf’s super frustrating though, I felt dialed on everything last week and this week everything feels off and awkward. Trying to grind through it

Thanks for watching through man! Hahah this game is so crazy. So many peaks and valleys. So one part of the lesson that I took out was Zach telling me to just grind on this swing and committing to it on the course at full speed. I may score really bad for a few months but it’ll start to feel more comfortable.

Erndog, that was impressive. I have heard and read so many different ways to turn but I must say trying the simple idea of left shoulder over right knee in dry swings is putting me in a great backswing position. I will be happy to hit my 8 iron 150 at my many years older than you 😂. I guess I’m going to have to change plans for tomorrow. I’ve got to go to the range now.

@@ErndogGolf I made it to the range this afternoon. I have a superball in the morning. I tried your pro’s idea as far as turning the left shoulder over the right knee. Now as I may have indicated, I am a very experienced golfer. And, I am always looking for new ideas to improve my backswing turn. I am happy 😊 to report this thought of turning my left shoulder over the right knee was, well, just about miraculous. There’s no way I can really get my shoulder over my knee but, just in the trying, it immediately improved my swing in several ways; similar to the changes it made in your swing from what I saw in your video. As I just concentrated on the turn it allowed me to let my hips release and it put me in a better position to shallow out my downswing. As a result (same with all clubs) I was hitting my driver with the distance I had or maybe even further than before a couple of injuries.I have been dealing with them for sometime which is why I am warning you to have a stretching program equal to your swing speed efforts. Anyway, my ball flight was a perfect trajectory with a tight draw. Good luck to you with your scratch challenge. The percentage of golfers who get to scratch is so small it will be difficult to achieve but enjoy the trying. I am sure your pro will be telling you that the short game and its practice is very important if you want to have any chance of getting to scratch. Good luck!!!

Definitely go get a proper fitting. Usually short clubs will mess with your ground contact a good bit. My guess is that it's a combination of both, but having properly fit clubs will help out a ton either way!
