Around 10 years back, I had a drowning accident in the Indian Ocean and was saved by 1 of my friends and I am hydrophobic since then. This year, I decided to give swimming a try again. It's been just 3-4 days since I joined the classes but there are still episodes when I panic. I am going to try these breathing tips - especially the relaxing thoughts - when I go into the pool tomorrow. Thanks for helping out!!!!

No problem! Having episodes is normal. What you are doing is exactly what needs to be done to overcome the problem. Face it head first! Congratulations! You are doing great

I am probably not your usual follower, 60 something, asthmatic bronchitic all my life, keen singer and 100% at home on, in and under water. I wish to be a manta ray in my next life. I write this comment to thank you for your clear, informative videos. My technique has improved, this wheezy old swimmer can now glide past younger, more energetic paddlers. I especially want to thank you for the insight you have given about breathing. I now swim regularly to improve my breathing, this is the main focus of my trips to the pool, and I keep in mind your advice. In many ways your explanations on how to breathe also match the techniques used for singing, I understand this more clearly as a result of your videos. My breath control is much better and I am hitting the high soprano notes with ease and no force, even when asthma is trying to close my bronchi. Thank you from a grateful follower

your videos helped me improve my frontcrawl from ~4 mins to under 2mins/100m. Last 4 months of swimming and now I can swim 1.5km (60 laps) in 30 mins with almost no break. Thank-you!

I only learned to swim at age 48 and then had to take nine months off for shoulder impingement (thank you PT for getting this to a manageable place!). I am 50 now, so really less than 1.5 years. I STILL struggle with the breathing aspect and I can only swim 100 yards at most before needing to stop about 20-30 seconds and catch breath. I've been practicing trickling out my breathing with 5 strokes before letting it all out, turning head and breathing in and am very slowly getting better at it but i still naturally want to turn head every other stroke and do all my breathing out at once. I am a very small person and I am certain I have small lung capacity. Many years ago I was told I had asthma but it is mild and I avoid the awful asthma inhalers. I just recently bought some kind of breathing apparatus and have just started practicing with that to increase my breathing capacity. I am also a very high anxiety sort of person and it's hard to calm down when swimming because my confidence in swimming is not high. I really don't think I could last more than 20 seconds exhaling underwater. Anything past that feels forced. I'm wondering if more land aerobic activity would help? Sadly I don't get enough of that (I am a caregiver and also work full time).

It's possible that you're struggling with a body position issue as well. If you're legs are sinking, it makes it much more difficult to swim without needing to catch your breathing because you're using so much energy to move forward.

Breathing. So basic yet complex. When I first started swimming the breath was rushed and irregular. Now I have the form under control, I start to breathe consciously, hopefully to make it a habit. I also sing. Breath control for singing is similar to swimming except the air out is via mouth, not nose, to vibrate vocal folds (how the singing voice came to be). I am very selective about apps but I will download your app because you are my favorite coach and I trust your technique and teaching.

I can hold my breath with no air in my lungs for over 1 minutes and 30 seconds. The best I have done is 2 minutes. I guess my problem when swimming is slow paced breath work, so essentially I don't need to breath in every time my head turns to the right or vise versa? Thank you!

I've a question, how the body weight can influence the speed in swimming?
@SkillsNT
Жыл бұрын
The weight in the water is different. We weight almost nothing in the water. However the shape of the body does influence a little bit the drag coefficient

@@SkillsNT this is interesting...so a skinny swimmer can be slower than a "fat" one?The weight of the %fat is lighter than water?
@SkillsNT
Жыл бұрын
@@FrankP83 yes definitely. But floating better doesn't translate immediately to faster swimmer. This is why technique is so important

I have a problem recently. I can swim breaststroke and I have practiced over the past 8 months. I have been sharping my skills. Two weeks ago, I was disrupted by a young boy who were playing water and I stand up from the water. From there, I suddenly can not swim. I always want to stand up. I can not raise my face and shoulder any longer. Every time I want to raise head, I want to stand up. I lost my swim skills altogether. How should I do, so frustrating.

The most of the time I force myself not to breath or rather to keep the air a little bit longer, or I just keep in mind that there's enough O2 in my blood. All this helps me not to hyperventilate 😄
