I think it would sound better with the synth bass being mono. It sounds a little jarring with none of it sounding right in front. Bass gets a little distracting when its tickling your ears like that. But idk maybe that's just my opinion.

Hmm, I never considered panning when doubling up my bass to allow it to breathe. This is both elegant and effective at addressing that issue. Thanks for sharing! :)

Another well done short vid, Nathan. I'm typically not a fan of the quickie, tik tok-style vids, but your recent ones have been really good. Just curious, on your synth bass, did you EQ out the top end to not interfere with the distorted analog bass., or the converse, cutting out the bottom end of the analog (or did you sidechain/a combo of all of them)? Would still like to see extended video versions of your productions on these parts (but I'm also aware of how time intensive the longer recordings are to produce). That distorted analog bass sounded awesome, by the way. 👍🏻✌🏻

That's awesome hearing that! Definitely wanting to make sure we still pack a punch with these shorts. As far as your question - I didn't really need to do much EQ because the sounds themselves didn't require it. You can either work with sounds that are already worked out that way or you can remove the elements you need if they need it. For me - I tend to get my sounds dialed in to essentially "already be EQ'd" how I want. The benefit of getting things sounding awesome right away is that is makes mixing 10x easier. Less subtractive EQ to deal with . So that distortion bass (the live bass) I worked on the tone with the pickups to make sure I wasn't capturing too much of the low stuff that I knew would conflict with the synth bass.

@@NathanJamesLarsen great job of basically pre-mixing your sound design. I was listening on my phone, so was a bit hard to tell, but it did seem that the top end on the synth was right at the bottom end of the bass. Really dug it

OK, beginner question here, but can you explain a little more about tweaking the synth settings so that they aren't identical to prevent phasing? I know what phasing is, I'm just not catching why the two synths can't be identical. Why would this cause phasing?
@NathanJamesLarsen

If they are identical then the signal will just two 2x as loud and not different enough... what ultimately makes is sound WIDE is the fact that they are slighty different. Could be a bit of saturation or even some slight filtering that can modify the sounds a bit.

Nathan I agree with you said that panned hard bass , but if you also hard pan the synth bass then what about the center? Low end bass should be in center nah? then why did you did that please explain.
