The amount of work you put into your B-roll and establishing shots is incredible. To run ahead and put the camera and then head back to capture you walking or driving would add so much time to the trip but it’s so worth it for us the viewers. Thank you!

Nigel, I thought I knew all this so wasn’t expecting to learn much but as it was you I clicked on the video anyway. Thank you for a very entertaining 20 minutes while I have my Sunday breakfast and I did learn more. It must have taken you ages to scout and plan all this out. Plus of course the editing. The combination of your drone videos, explanations and photos are top drawer. It doesn’t get better than this. Oh wait, . . . the next video!

Depends what you are going to do with the photo. I doubt you would enlarge a photo with a blurred foreground. I imagine if you are blowing up the photo to huge professional sizes, like I imagine he is doing, this is probably the technique to use?

I used hyperfocal focussing all the time back in film days, carrying a sheet of paper around with all my lens settings and checking for every shot. It was impossible to focus stack 35mm slides! But I thought it was a lost art since the advent of digital and photoshop focus stacking. Glad you showed this. It's always better to get it right in camera.

Great video Nigel, amazing scenery and some great practical scenarios to demonstrate all the technical focusing stuff using Pills. I find the hyperfocal table in Pills to be very useful as a quick reference - just navigate to find where the x and y axis meet, and you can pick AR to show where the minimum focus point is. Takes out all the jargon and complexity. Look forward to your next production - keep up the great work!

Thank you for this tutorial, Nigel. I constantly have issues with focusing and focus stack more than I probably need to. The issue for me is when I am trying to use my 10 stop ND filters to slow down the water in the waterfall, while also including a small subject in the near distance. I have the PhotoPills app, but did not understand the fact that doubling the HFD would help a lot. I’m going to try this next time. Thanks again.

A bit elementary but always good to be reminded of the key issues. It is interesting that you double. I generally just go beyond the HFD a bit. I think the doubling is an easier algorithm to remember and I'll change to it. Again always good to go back to the basics every now and again.

Great location to explain a technical subject and hold attention. Beautiful. Oh for the days when a lens had DOF scales on them. Another aspect to consider is sensor resolution and therefore the ability to see what is acceptably sharp. I remember when we went from standard def to HD video in tv production, that we would see more focus errors on shots where before the lack of resolution hid them.

Excellent video. Photopils needs to sponsor you. I shoot with the 7RIV and find Photopils Circle of Confusion set way too large for this camera. They use .03 mm, which might be fine for an 8x10 image, but for the resolution of the camera sensor supports much larger images. It should be closer to .01 mm. Fortunately, Photopils provides a “Advanced” option at the bottom of the DoF tool to select Advanced and set it by hand.
