The "mission trip" essay can be a killer, they get that kind of stuff all of the time. Not saying yours was bad at all, just that I think admissions are biased against students who talk about those type of experiences.

Yeah....imma just still go ahead and try to get into 5 AP classes junior year and Senior year, try to get national merit, get myself ranked in tennis, become the president of my robotics club, win piano competitions, and obtain eagle rank in Boyscouts. Even if I manage to pull all of that off (which that's pretty much my dream goal, I've been working at these subjects for years, key word DREAM) I don't think even I would have anything more than a 30% chance of even getting into MIT or Dartmouth. My best bet would be Hamilton (my dad went there), and for what? Crippling student debt, endless classwork hours, and a job in the end that I would eventually come to realize just how much I hated it? Well that's kind of the dark side of things but I digress. What do you think I could do better?
@Nedyah-gg4bo

What exactly do colleges want if it’s not near perfect ACT/SAT, grades, near all AP classes and a 5 minute list of leadership in extra curriculars? I have the same academic record (same ACT score and grades but never taken SAT) with way less extra curriculars and I thought I might have a shot at some of these higher end schools but now I’m doubtful haha
@santim6413

Honestly, everyone applying for top schools has near-perfect grades and test scores. It's not special. Focus on making a moving personal essay. Don't be boring. Don't talk about work experience or classes too much because that's already on your resume and transcript. Instead, try to tell a story that will make the reader have an emotional response. A story about growing up homeless and struggling to survive while going through school is way better than someone talking about their internship at Google. 1,000 other applicants also wrote about interning at Google or playing water polo or whatever and it puts people to sleep. It's much harder to dig deep and tell someone sensitive details about a time when you were weak and vulnerable.

@@santim6413 tl;dr 1.) Do stuff that is meaningful, not just stuff that is big. I did mock trial, swim, and AcaDec in sophomore year but I barely touched on those. 2.) Apply to colleges based on how their philosophy melds with yours, not their ranking. Read Niche reviews and find what the students/faculty seem to value the most. 3.) If you're someone who's "hurt" by affirmative action, GET RID OF THAT IGNORANT-ASS MINDSET. If they're looking for diversity, give them diversity. Be proud of your roots, and think long and hard about how they shaped you. Child of immigrants? Sweet, how has that molded you? Product of tiger parents? How have you grown from complying and/or resisting? BE 👏 PROUD 👏 See, I got into Pomona College, which has 6-9% acceptance and is top LAC in the nation (for all those tiger kids out there) with a 1560 SAT, Asian roots, and a perfect GPA... But so many others with those exact same traits didn't. Hell, we have more Latinos than we do Asians, and more intl students as we do in-states -- they ain't hiding their affirmative action. I wrote about how I developed an anxiety disorder from trying to set up a brand-new political club in junior year and then failing... But then how I recovered by working for a city council candidate... In a city of 80,000 people. Literally: we polled at 5%, this wasn't a hotshot Quora-level campaign here LOL Still, I managed to get an intern for city councilwoman who LOVED my passion (so she wrote a really cool letter of rec), and now I'm really just running around helping random community organizations with their different initiatives. I'm not saving animals or building African libraries, I'm literally just doing paperwork for whoever asks me to -- but I love it, and Pomona could tell. I also had to write a "Why this major?" essay. This is when I showed how proud I was of my Asian roots, but not by dropping a shallow cliche about "being raised the children of immigrants" and "always being expected to be the best"... I went to town about how my parents' memories of South Vietnam's extreme corruption and political chaos inspire me to learn how to effectively run a government. Be smart, be passionate, be strong. You got this, and no matter where you land, you'll be amazing. Most students in the US only apply to and get into about 3 colleges anyways, and they still turn out alright.

@@ProdigalExplorer That's the kind of thing someone who didn't go to Harvard says. I went to one of those "wow factor" colleges. Not Harvard, but same ballpark in prestige. After 25 years, I am still getting bright eyed positive reactions and praise at every job interview and personal interaction because of it. Don't get me wrong. I don't think this is how it should be. But it is. No one ever once asked what kind of studies I did or what GPA I got or anything like that. The name of the school is all that matters. It's crazy, but that's why these schools are so sought after.

Took it freshman year, was pretty difficult at the time. Would have been hard to take with other APs because my class had a big workload. Overall scored a 5 on the exam - and don't get me wrong the exam is one of the hardest exams but you have to think of every question in terms of what logically makes sense. Combining logic with facts that you learn in the course if how u score well.
