N0.MercY- haha true, but I think compared to some of my classmates, my GPA wasn't very competitive (kids had 4.0UW and like 4.8W) also compared to the average UW GPA of Penn, which is 3.93, a 3.84 doesn't look that great I'm still pretty happy about my GPA though considering I was really busy most of high school :)

Heidi Chiu UPENN is my dream school. How would I get in if my school does not offer extra curricular activities because it is very small (125 students 9-12 grade) my grades are excellent, it's just that I've been hearing more a more about how colleges want a person who does a lot of ec's. P.S. I want to go to Wharton and I am in the 10th grade.

To be in the top 5% at my school you need a 5.0.... It all depends on what school you go to. For her an I a 4.6 isn't the best.

Great example of how even for top schools like Penn you don't need to have perfect or near-perfect grades and test scores. As long as you are above a certain level that shows you can do the work, what matters most is a unique profile that shows what you will contribute to the school. I'm sure the free clinic work made Heidi stand out from other nursing candidates, and I bet the recommendation from her clinic supervisor was glowing.

Vidal Zazueta I think I felt my GPA was the weakest part of my application overall and also a lot of my classmates had much higher GPA's (mentioned it in about comment). Also compared to Penn's average accepted applicant (uw 3.93), a 3.84 doesn't seem too great haha I agree though, my GPA definitely isn't bad at all but I don't think it's what got me in edit: wanted to add that for weighted GPA, my school happened to offer a lot of AP/honors classes, so if you're taking the hardest courses your school offers but don't have as high of a weighted GPA as other applicants, they definitely take your school's curriculum into consideration

Sagar Singal I think the 35 definitely helped, but I'd say my essays as well. Being able to do a cadaver dissection as a high school student is pretty unheard of, and assuming they read my additional info essay on clinic, they could (hopefully) see my passion for healthcare. Also, I spent a LOT of time researching for my Penn supplement. I wrote about very specific nursing professors and classes (compared the curriculum to other nursing school curriculums) and wrote why I thought I suited Penn's vision for their nursing students. Also wrote about what I wanted to do at Penn besides academics (like volunteering and ec's)?

Do you recommend taking as many AP classes as possible? Some of my teachers don’t recommend it, but I want to do it to impress colleges.
@culturatisanta4590
6 жыл бұрын
Take as many AP classes as you can while still keeping your GPA high. If your interest/ability in a specific area is not strong, then don't feel pressured into taking the AP. You are better off getting an A in a regular class than a B- or C+ in an AP class. A big exception is the field you want to study. If you are planning to major in chemistry or French, you definitely need to take the corresponding AP class. My son did not take AP Lit even though most of his top tier classmates did. He took AP Comp instead and did well enough. And he got accepted to Penn Engineering.
@kimberlyrosales366
6 жыл бұрын
Culturati Santa, ok thanks. I was planning to take 7 AP throughout high school, but I don’t know if that is enough to get into UPenn(my dream school). Is there a minimum number of AP classes you have to take to get into this school or a top ten school?
@culturatisanta4590
6 жыл бұрын
There is no minimum number of APs or magic formula to get in. The official view of Penn and other top schools is that they want you to "take full advantage of the academic offerings" at your specific school. Which means that if your high school offers 10 AP courses, 7 is probably pretty good, but maybe not so good if your school offers 20 AP courses. Another thing to remember is that Penn will compare you to other students at your school who apply there. If most other applicants are taking 10-12 APs but you are only taking 7, then Penn may not see that as taking full advantage of the academic offerings. That said, remember that Penn and other top schools view your application holistically and that APs are only a small part of the overall picture. Taking fewer APs can be balanced out by standing out in other areas of the application. Hope that helps.
@culturatisanta4590
6 жыл бұрын
Also, your college guidance counselor at your high school is probably the best qualified to advise you on which AP courses to take that will maximize your chances to get into the best school you can.
@culturatisanta4590
6 жыл бұрын
Sorry, one more comment: My son actually took only 7 AP classes and was accepted to Penn. Some of other the top students at his high school took 9-10 APs, so taking fewer didn't kill his chances. However, he did take most of the possible math/science AP classes, and because he applied to the engineering school, not taking harder humanities courses like AP English Lit and AP European History likely did not have a big negative impact on his application.

See I am extremely scared about college. Our school changed our grading system on us and we are one of the first classes in the country to be graduating on the Common Core Standards System which goes on a four point scale instead of As and Bs (and so on). We are the guinea pigs and they keep changing stuff on us so our grades are all over the place. My school did not handle the change very well, as you can see. It's actually impossible to have straight 4s (I wish I was joking) and I'm afraid colleges will see that I didn't get them and then reject me. Maybe I just have way too high of standards of myself. I am just hoping colleges see what happened and understand.

Could I be accepted into UPenn (my dream school)? I’m going to be a senior in high school for the 2018-19 year, and will be taking 5APs and 1DE. I have already taken 4 APs, scores 3 in world history and have not received scores yet in Psych Stat and APUSH. (I think I did really well) As of now, I have a UW 3.96 and W 4.55 GPA. My sat is 1340, but I just took the sat this past Saturday and I believe I did at least 1400+. I’m president of Spanish honor society and member of Mu alpha theta (math hs). I definitely lack in extra curriculars. And hope to be more involved next school year. I also volunteer at the miracle league where I help people with special needs play baseball. I have 227 hours logged, and it will be more before graduation. I also have a job, where I work 8-16 hours a week. Any recommendations or comments on what I should do?

hey guys idk if someone will see my comment but what are the chances of a mexican entering upenn? cause like everyone's know, the mexican education is shitty, we dont have extracurriculars and we not take the act or sat,thats why i go to a private school,cause in theory has a better education system , im in my last year of high school, and i always been the best of my class, ik speak english, i did take lessons fo swimming, soccer, music and i went to a rubiks cube championship in mexico, idk if i should apply to upenn, what do you think?

Hello, I'm Armin. I'm a rising senior, applying in the fall. I've done Penn specific programs (science related) from 10th grade and onward. I've been quite involved, and love the environment of the school. Could that help me in the application process? Are SAT subject tests really that important? If so, can I just take Biology and Physics, since they are more related to biophysics, instead of a Science & Math? In ninth grade, I had 3 B's and a C (Spanish) for the yearly report on my transcript. But from 10th grade and up until now, I had all A's. Will that still put me at a disadvantage? I only took one AP class (Computer science principles) in junior year, because my school only has three. I couldn't take one of them because it was the same time as my current AP, and the other one would be in the way of my Algebra II class. However, I registered for AP Microeconomics for senior year. Will this put me a disadvantage? How can I let them know about this on the Common App? Will early decision help me with a better chance of admission? It's my top school choice, and I live in Philadelphia. Thanks!

Armin Mahdavi If you write about how you fit Penn and how Penn fits you, then maybe it could help! Which college are you applying to? I'd say it matters most for Wharton, Nursing, and Engineering (you can see this on Penn's website) Hmm.. having a C definitely isn't ideal. Not sure how much it'll affect you though :/ You can probably write about the classes situation in the additional information section! Applying early will definitely help your chances, I think they have stats on % admitted early vs regular.

Heidi Chiu , I'm applying to the College of Arts & Sciences for biophysics/biology. I have all As after 9th grade; 10th and 11th grade. My unweighted GPA is 3.85. If I do Early Decision, I won't have time to take the SAT subject tests. What should I do? Btw, do you know someone named Sandra in Penn Nursing? She's my friend. We took Math 103 together. Thanks.

Im going to be a junior and I know for a fact that I want to be a business major but the biggest problem for me is I don't have a lot of extra curriculars what should I do?
@GreatBomb126
7 жыл бұрын
Will Angulo Depends on the circumstances you're under. My school's extracurriculars are awful so I had to make up my own extracurriculars which directly aimed toward what I wanted to do and were recognized by my school. Your extracurriculars don't have to be affiliated with your major, so take 2 or 3 random extracurriculars and 1 that fits in with your major. for example, try to see if your school has a FBLA club and see if you can get in and try for the competition

No. I came from the Dominican Republic my Junior year with 0 extracurricular and now I'm on set to graduate my senior year as valedictorian with an early full ride scholarship to Rutgers (though I'm still applying to Yale and Duke). You can still do it, all you have to do is a make a plan on what you will dedicate your time on. For a business major, I would probably take as many AP/IB courses in math and micro/macroeconomics, try to join if not create the FBLA club, join a community service group because that's essential. Even if you won't be the president or something of any of the extracurricular clubs it doesn't mean anything just try your hardest in them like really really hard.
@heidichiu4121

Will Angulo agree about the business clubs, maybe find some business or entrepreneur competitions? have you heard of Junior Achievement? I highly recommend their Company Program and Be Entrepreneurial competitions/programs! Also if it possible for you to get a job? Any job that gives you work experience. Not sure how feasible this is since I didn't do any research on business internships, but could you apply to some or shadow people if you know what specific aspect of business you want to concentrate in (finance, operations, entrepreneur, etc)

I know they definitely take your high school into account, so I think as long as you took the most challenging curriculum possible, you've already done the most you can! Hey! I'm Heidi actually and you can find all of that information in the blog post! (supertutortv.com/informational/how-to-get-into-upenn/) I'll also copy the important info here: "Out of the 9 schools I applied to (UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UC Davis, CalPoly SLO, SDSU, USC, JHU, and UPenn), I was accepted into SLO and SDSU before March. After the likely letter from Penn, I withdrew my application from UC Davis, JHU, and USC because I knew I wouldn’t choose any of those schools over Penn. I kept 3 schools- UCSD, UCLA, and UCI- just in case and I wanted to talk to my parents about financial costs. I didn’t apply to nursing at UCLA (because I thought I’d have a better chance as a normal college major, which I regret a little), but I was waitlisted at UCLA and UCSD, and I was accepted into UCI. Ultimately, I decided not to take those waitlist spots since I was basically committed to Penn. At that point, I had already gotten my official acceptance letter from Penn and I didn’t really have to make much of a decision (mostly since I didn’t have many other options). All in all, although I was accepted to Penn with a likely letter, I definitely wasn’t the type of candidate that was accepted everywhere I applied."

SAT/ACT Also, it doesnt look like you sent in recommendations from teachers from the field that you were going to apply into. At the info session I attended they recommended that we send in teacher recs from classes in the field (so calc for wharton)
@heidichiu4121
7 жыл бұрын
Oh man I didn't realize they changed it; I'm pretty sure we were required to take the tests with the writing. Now that they don't require, I'm not actually sure.. I would if writing was a strong part of your test score I guess. Yep, my recs were both humanities! (note: I did have an outside rec from the clinic I volunteered at though). It was something I was a little worried about but then thought maybe it presented me as a more well-rounded applicant. To be honest, I would just choose the teacher who knows you best so they have something personal and unique to say about you.

Why go to penn for nursing ? Why not somewhere cheap?
@heidichiu4121
7 жыл бұрын
www.nursing.upenn.edu/admissions/why-penn-nursing/ (aka research, professors, the curriculum itself) Penn is really flexible so you can take whatever classes you want (not just nursing), and the people here are awesome :) connections are really important! Also, you can sub-matriculate to get a master's in nursing in one year at Penn! Job-wise, nursing is already quite a stable career, but many Penn grads I know have really great starting salaries/jobs at renowned hospitals.

Lauren Spiegel the highest score is 36! You can get a 36 in each of the 4 sections to get a composite full score of 36! However, you can still get a composite score of 36 as long as the 4 sections average to 35.5 or higher (eg if you got a 35E, 36M, 36R, 35S, your composite score would still be a 36) and thanks for watching!! glad you found it helpful :)
