Your story about learning photography sounds exactly like mine when I learned photography in Jr High. It was pure magic to see a print develop in front of my eyes. Another magical thing that happened in class is that one day this "ghost dog" started appearing in people's prints. It was just a random thing that happened once in a while. We finally figured out that there was a negative with this dog stuck in one of the enlargers. Of course then the magic was gone.

I joined my high school photography club and experienced my first B&W WOW darkroom experience (also shooting with a RF). That was five decades ago and a few years later I picked up my first SLR, Nikon F2A + Motor Drive. I remembered I was planning to get a AE-1 in that camera shopping trip.

Word is Matt Day sheds a single tear every time someone says "Kodak HP5"😂 Awesome video! I feel the exact same way every time I hang a roll of negatives up to dry. And I'm just constantly amazed at the fact that someone actually came up with that process!

that oil that comes with electric shavers works really well on the notorious Canon shutter squeal...(have 2 A-1's)

Fun to hear about your aha moments. I started with an AE-1 in 1978 but didn’t do darkroom work for 20 years. The chrome filter ring on the front of that lens gives you street cred.

Great video. Really brought back my same falling in love with photography. I use a Canon A1 sometimes, basically the same as the AE-1 but with manual, aperture, shutter priority as well as program modes.

I’m so glad you feel that way. The AE-1 stays around because that nostalgia really reminds me of why I do this.

I got my start with my mom's old Pentax Spotmatic. Unfortunately, it was stolen in a break-in many years ago. I kinda wish I still had it for nostalgia purposes, but there really isn't much point in trying to replace it with another.

This is super helpful video - thank you! Do you have an explainer on how to use this camera/film for the first time. Why do people recommend to put the ISO lower on the camera setting than the one that is on the stock film itself? And how do you use the internally built in light sensor? Bit more detail would be great! Thank you!
