I purchased a small False Bird of Paradise from Lowes last year. I overwintered it indoors and it did terrible. I can admit that I did not do the best in taking care of it but it all died back and the soil dried to a solid clumped mass. Once spring came around I noticed a tiny bit of green coming out from the soil so I stuck it outdoors. Eventually it started pushing out more leaves so I repotted it and now I have a plant that is even fuller than when I first bought it. Im in zone 7b. I feel more confident that I will be able to overwinter it this year in the off season and look forward to actually separating it into more plants next spring.

Wonderful Video Jeff! Heliconias are one of my favorites as well! The only tip I have is if you receive a rhizome, do NOT over pot the rhizome - use a small nursery can to get it going, and as it grows up-pot it as needed, but DO NOT mess with the roots when repotting. After 3 years I've realized if I mess with the roots when repotting, they tend to try and "start over." Also, Heliconia psittacorum x spathocircinata hybrid varieties like "tropic," "african dawn," and "guyana." are extremely vigorous (in my experience) and may be better suited to climates outside of the tropics. I have a massive 6ft tall pot of heliconia tropic that was grown from a thumb sized bare root rhizome I got in April. It has also been much less finicky than any of my psittacorums (andromeda, choconiana, sassy, and lady di). I hope this helps someone! They are so rewarding to grow!

Best plants ever! Yeah I edited out the potting and pruning portion to save for a diff video bc this one was like 45 minutes with that info it. Decided to keep it casual for now. Good points. They like their roots to fill out their containers before the foliar growth will take off. Step up in small increments is best.

I have 3 large lobster claws that I limped thru the winter in huge pots and dragged into my garage when the temps dropped under 50 last winter. Zone 9b. I put one in the ground in the spring and it bloomed for me!! Flowers lasted over 2 months!! So nervous for the winter but I plan to cover it with straw and see if it makes it before I plant the others out. I also have a fire bird that the tag said 6ft and it's pushing 10, no blooms yet so im not sure if it was miss labeled. I will tarp it and add straw for the coolest nights. I do have issues with root mealies when I leave them potted up. Fingers crossed they are my favorite plants!

Oh root mealies are terrible! Obnoxious little bugs! The rostratas are generally more cold tolerant, I bet with some good protection they'll be ok. Have my fingers crossed for you! Hopefully it will be a mild winter. 😊

Agreed, Heliconia are amazing! I have a ‘Hot Lava’ that I got from urban tropicals that I hope will flower next year. Summer has been warm enough in WNY to get good growth over the summer, but not to be borderline invasive. Great to know about the leaves remaining curled in “cool” temperatures. I’ll have to keep an eye out for H. hirsuta. I’m tempted to try H. schediana just for the foliage, and store it dormant. What do you think of bringing snow up to temperature for watering? I’ve seen one of the Aquascape contractors plant Heliconia in a wetland filter for the summer, and it was innnnsane! Looked like it was in all day sun.

Hi what zone are you located? I'm in zone 9 and I always take them in (potted) during winter, but they're not happy. The leaves brown. Then they get new leaves when I bring them back out. Wondering if they'll survive if I just keep them out during the winter. But not sure how to protect them from frost. I have the lobster claw kind. No blooms so far.

I've got a sunroom in my restaurant in Texas stays warmer in there than the average house during the warm seasons. Trying to find big structural plants for that room. Stays warm. Heated in winter. Humidity is meh. Could easily keep up with the watering and familiar with citrus so I can do nutrient hogs needing awesome drainage... Can you think of any Heliconias which might work in that situation?
@TropicalPlantParty
Жыл бұрын
Hey, Aaron! The Carmasita helicona is one that gets large and very full, similar to a white bird of paradise but gives an abundance of flowers. They are one of the more sturdy ones. Another option for something smaller might be the Strawberries and Cream heliconia, they are pretty rugged. Heliconia rostrata does well in cooler areas and will still flower without intense heat, but they aren't always the most attractive plants when they aren't in flower.
@GiBByFRieD_ATX

Thank you! The flowers would be a bonus honestly. Really just need a plant whose form makes a statement. Liking Heliconia for that. Just wanted to make sure it would be happy in that situation. Can't be having a big statement plant that looks miserable. LOL

I have these plants. I water daily as I’m in S Florida and the plants are facing South. My HOA only waters 15 min a day which isn’t enough. So 2-3 times a week I water for 30 min or more with the sprinklers I set up on my own. Depends if we had rain or not. The ones I have planted facing East do not need that much attention. I started with 4 plants. They spread like crazy and I now have over 50. My problem is they are popping up in the lawn area. I even have one growing in a crack in the cement. They won’t stop spreading. What can I do? I don’t want to remove them all. Is there a way I can stop the spread? I don’t think so but no harm in asking. I love these plants. Another benefit I found is that they hide my caterpillars that are munching on the milkweed so they can survive and become a chrysalis before the birds see them. I currently have 21 chrysalis’ that should produce Monarchs in another week.

Good information. I’m trying to grow my first 2 5 gallon pots of these which look like your variety here in gulf breeze Florida. Thinking about keeping in pots outside out of windy areas and bring into my garage when we have days or nights below 50. So there might be a few days here and there they would only be exposed to full lighting in my garage. What do you think of that strategy? Do you cut back the blooms after they run their course? If so how far like all the way to the ground

Hi! Jennifer from Texas gulf coast zone 9b here. 1st off LOVE LOVE your channel 😍 I learn so much and all around enjoy you and your feather and fur-babies. Because of you I ordered a few Heliconias from yaybroms and am successfully growing a Rostrata which had a HUGE Rhizome and now it has 2 large leaves and I was wondering if I could move upto a self-watering pot about 12 inches I believe. I also have 2 Sassy Psittacorums, 1 bloomed from original stalk and 1 has 3 leaves growing from the rhizome itself. My other Psittacorum Flamingo is doing something weird 🤪 the stalk on top is dying back but, no new growth coming up BUT, the rhizome is still nice and firm with no roots EXCEPT a thick white (with tiny green tip) is coming off rhizome growing out the side and growing upward close to top of soil. What to do? Lol sorry I am so long winded but, I am so excited and in love with these thanks to you. I appreciate EVERYTHING you do. Thank you so much. Keep it up!!
