Thanks so much, I seem to be on the same page as you, that is with my Phals. I read awhile back that when you take a Phal out of a pot and transfer it to full water culture that a lot if not all of their roots will slowly die because they don't know water but the new roots will go to the water and like it. That means we have to be very patient . I just got a Vascostylis last week and decided to do full water culture, so far it looks happy. I agree with you, I have my orchids in my bedroom and it is very dry. I am going to try different ones too. Thanks again !

margespenst I am happy to hear you are having success with water culture. In my experience only a few of my Phals had roots that died when I switched them over. And orchid over time naturally looses older roots and produces new ones. If the orchid is sick or weak that's a whole other story and they tend to loose all of their roots all at once and then we wait for them to recover. I have several Phals in full water culture for over a year with no roots lost and I have several that lost every root and grew new ones. Because of the plants that have had no root loss I'm not sure if I completely subscribe to the belief that every orchid drops its roots and develops new ones because of the water. One thing is for sure though as soon as I put them in water culture there is usually quite a few new roots that immediately grow and I love watching the roots grow! Happy growing!

Danielle! This was an awesome video for us newbie water culturists! I'm glad that I stumbled upon it. Thanks for such a varied group of examples and explanations of what to watch for so as to adjust water levels and understand the plants vigor! At this point i'm doing six days wet and one day dry because my environment is very cool compared to yours and they seem to like that. I probably will go to full as the summer warmth arrives. Thank you, again!
I have recently started growing Phals, both full size and many mini rescues. I am doing full water culture 2 days wet and 5 days dry, most are doing well on this method. I have them in glass vases taller than their roots and am putting stones in the bottom with about 1” of rain water. Their roots are not in the water for the 5 days and I am hoping this will sufficiently increase the humidity. Does this sound reasonable?

Paula from Mexico. Thank you. I have 4 that I am trying in water culture. They are rescue ones with no roots. I don’t know if they will make it. One has only one leave and a baby leaf, long steam, no roots. All 4 are from people for me to rescuer. They were badly damages from bugs. Mellie bugs. They did not do well in medium, so now I am trying this.

What type of fertiliser do you put in the water each week? I am a novice and all my phals came in sphagnum. I re-potted two and one raced away and flowered and the other gradually sickened and died. On advice I then replanted them all into very coarse bark chunks. They are much happier. I water them under the tap, let them drain and then put them on a saucer filled with small pebbles. They seem fine, except the last one has two flower spikes but they open all wonky. They look a bit like the one in your video. The flowers look as if the petals are drooping but if you touch the they are not soft and droopy, just sort of half open and deformed. I don't have a clue what is wrong and think I will try your water culture with this one and see if it helps. Learning curve for me too.

You might want to try my simi-water culture with gravel method. Use aquarium gravel, add 1 1/2" - 2" inches of gravel to bottom of vase, fill water to top of gravel level. This method allow root tip to touch wet gravel but doesn't submerge root in water therefore preventing root rot. This method allow constant humidity due to evaporation, but you still need to mist the root every few days. I think you should test out this method for yourself and see how it is.....try it!

I’ve been watching a few videos on water culture for orchids because I am thinking about trying them for my Phals. This video has probably been the most informative of all the ones I’ve seen. Very interesting for you to go through each one and talk about your reasons for the water level. I have two questions. You mentioned earlier in the video about removing the vellum? Why is that necessary? And 2. Do use just regular tapwater? And I assume a weak strength fertilizer with it?
@daniellesorchidranch1591

Garnet16 thank you! I'm glad my video was helpful. I remove rotting velamin so it won't effect the other roots. I have a video on dealing with root rot for more info. I use distilled water and fertilizer since my tap water is way to hard and the ph is to high, I also have a recent video I did on fertilizing in January of this year that you can check out if you'd like more info. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

Hi. This is the first time I'm learning about water culture for orchids. I thought water rotted the roots period! I'm so excited to try this. I recently bought myself a Phal for my birthday because I fell in live with the purple and white mottled flowers. The leaves are yellowing but I thought I could save the poor little Lady. Her name is 'Lady Gorgeous'. Lol! Soon after taking it home her flowers started wilting and one fell off. There was one bud that opened three days ago but its wilting now also. I don't know the state of her roots as I did not want to touch it since it was blooming. But should I cut back the spike and try to grow it in water? Please help me...I've just started actively growing orchids and I have a keen interest in rescuing them

Ok so it mimics them being in rain forest which generates its own watering system by creating rain from the tree cover creating high humidity.

Rosemary Boast I've had some that aren't 100 percent happy at first and sometimes can take quite a while to transition. However I only grow with water culture so it's get with it or else. Lol I will just work with that orchid and watch it more closely to figure out what it needs and usually I can improve its attitude 😁 It may mean though that they live but don’t bloom and if that’s the case as long as they are growing that’s fine by me. My Cattleya’s were not thrilled with WC so I’m trying semi hydro which is just another version of WC. I really don’t see myself ever using organic media. The only thing that comes close is I mounted my Tolumias on pieces of branch to give them something to grab onto.

I find offering less water is helpful. If a root is rotting and you take the water away it will just shrivel. By just offering a small amount of water you are still providing humidity. But my house is really dry so that is why instead of taking all water away I just take most of the water away. Your home many not be as dry.

So since I am JUST starting my phalaenopsis in water growing.. Do I let it soak for 2 days in water up to bottom of the plant. Then drain off to just barely covered for 5 or so days. Then repeat.. 2 days full water, 5 days little water???? confused. I am the one who has the plant with no leaves but great roots.

There are two main types of water culture: Full water culture, where the roots have some contact with water all the time. Semi water culture, where you soak the roots for a few days and then drain the water completely and let the roots dry for several days. You have to decide what is best for your plant based on your growing conditions. Wishing you success with your leafless orchid!

I have a mini phal that came with fungus on the roots. I repotted and failed. i have just one good root at this time. The flower spike has stalled. I did 2 days water and one day dry. But there is no humidity in the house and the velamen has dried. I thought that full water culture will help, but caused fungus on the roots. How do you ensure that fungus doesnt come back every 2 days after the water culture?
@daniellesorchidranch1591
3 жыл бұрын
So if the velamin dried and shriveled up it was dead. So when you introduced the water again the fungus was able to grow because the root was dead and already rotting. If a root is healthy and mold or fungus develop it’s usually because there is not enough air circulation or the stem has a lot of debris (left over pieces or root or leaves) on it that is retaining moisture and causing mold/fungus.

Help !!! I'm trying to rescue a couple of orchids in really bad shape with no roots at all like the one you have with the green microfiber, one has a single new root trying to grow it looks like, a little less than an inch, and the other still has none, just the skinny stick looking root things and any root pieces have all rotted off and now it's leaves are yellowing ! I don't understand if i'm supposed to keep them in the water or keep them suspended above, or treat them both differently. The one that is yellowing had another keiki (?) at one point but that broke off and i'm trying to rescue that one too but I'm not sure if that's even possible since it never had it’s own roots yet, it does have a little nub growing which i'm hoping is a root, I just don't know how to help these guys and how I should be keeping them in water and really don’t want to kill them. I watched that one after which I think addressed my first two (fingers crossed), but I'm not sure you addressed the rescue of a keiki that never developed roots yet ? is this possible to save? What I'm also struggling with still is the 3rd yellow one bc I can't tell if it's dead or savable, and if it is savable, I have no idea where to even start with it =[ It's leaves are now almost entirely yellow with a hint of green in the middle, not drooping but i suppose that's bc they're full of water (since yellow = over watered ?) and no roots just the skinny sticks/inner cortex ! Can he be saved ? =[
