The reason the standard batts didn't fit is because the concrete studs are wider than the 1.5 inches of the typical 2x4 stud that the insulation is designed for. That might be part of the reason Superior Walls recommend using spray foam.

Why do you need to add insulation to those walls, don't they come with R-21 pre-installed?

The major advantage of mineral will is that it doesn't really matter if it does get wet. Roxul even makes/made a "drainboard" product to act as a drainage plane and exterior insulation for basements, and their comfort board is often installed under slabs. I honestly think you may have done yourself a disservice by spraying in that foam. If it does flood, and water finds a crack in that foam, it may take forever to dry out. Mineral wool will not hold water, and will probably allow the cavity to dry quickly when you strip your baseboards and damaged drywall.

Question… is insulation a necessity? I was told it’s not needed.

Could you fill the void with concrete?

I got 2 inch white foam at manards on sale for 20 dollars a 4 x 8 sheet. Then I cut them on my table saw to fit tight and rubber hammer them in. I spray foamed top and bottom to fill as needed.

That’s another way to do it! I first started with some 4” EPS foam that I had but it was a pain to cut on the table saw and a huge mess. Not itchy, obviously, but a mess. Plus I want as high of R value as I can get for the price and amount of work.

It looks like you used stego as a subslab air barrier. I'm trying to find out how to detail stego with the superior walls for my new build. Any chance you can provide some insight on what you did? Looks like you taped to the metal studs?

Like your video just a small note. Maybe try not to rock back and forth when you’re holding your phone. It’s a lot of motion. Thanks

Mineral wool is hydrophobic and won't absorb water if it gets wet. You don't need to maintain that gap at the bottom of the walls.

What screws are best to use when attaching wood to the studs of the superior wall?

8 x 4 foam boards, Owens Corning FPS, 2" R10. Easy to cut, no waste. No Itching. Will last longer, will not blow through it. Etc Etc. Just doing my attic with three layers. I have become a contortionist. LoL

2” of XPS doesn’t give me the R values I want so I’d be doing multiple layers, adding work and costing quite a bit more. Plus, I did try a few bays like that when I first started and quickly moved away from it for those reasons. If you’re talking just the lower portion where I spray foam, then sure, that’s another option. I just thought spraying was quicker and easier.

Mini splits are horrible at dehumidification outside of summer. Shoulder seasons and most importantly in winter you will need additional dehumidification

I really like your decision on how to insulate. Totally makes sense. I am not sure where you are nor your region. Just wondering if you are thinking of installing an ERV or HRV or retrofitting it in?
