Switch to a flasher with fin and lures that create their own action. That way you don't have to go so fast. Resi coho can be caught constantly at 40 to 50 ft. I just use dropper weight. Yesterday I used kokanee rod with 8oz dropper and 8inch flasher

@kayakfishingpnw

Good question. I’d actually try to launch near a kayak rental. They strategically place themselves near calm water. It’s actually not a bad idea to rent your first time out because they give you a safety talk. You might even want to ask them if they plan to call back the rentals at a certain time. It’s extremely common this time of year for strong winds to roll in in the afternoon even if it’s currently very calm. For your first couple trips stick really close to shore and make sure it’s a warm and windless day. Just my two cents, there is a lot to kayak safety that’s worth researching. I’m hoping to do a video on it soon actually.

Thank you! I’m very complimented that you would ask. I would be wary about taking people out on guided trips due to the liability concerns. I believe it also requires licenses/permits that I don’t have. But happy to answer a few questions if you have any.

This video I was still going pretty fast. Around 4 even 4.5 mph with the current, 2.5-3 against it. If that is fast for you, try a diver+triangle flasher board+cut plug. With that 2.5-3 is plenty.

what size line are you using? I didn't catch that in the video?
@kayakfishingpnw
3 ай бұрын
30# braid main line, 40’ of 25# mono to the flasher, then 3-4’ of 20# fluorocarbon between the flasher and lure. If I snag I want to lose as little gear as possible basically. The mono also is stretchy which helps fight the fish. It’s also wider which facilitates being clipped into the downrigger. The braid just reduces drag compared to other lines.

I’ve never tried it. But you might be able to get away with a relatively heavy banana weight and a spinning herring with no flasher board. Other than that, I’ve been considering looking into dipsy divers but those seem to come with their own headaches.
@loganfishbeard

The old delta divers can get you down there pretty deep. Just make sure you have a beefy rod to run them on because they really dig hard. Snubber behind them does hurt either.

Would it be too tough to troll on the Puget Sound with just a paddle kayak?
@kayakfishingpnw
Ай бұрын
I’ve been researching slower speed trolling. I think you’d have a good shot with a spinning flasher board+diver and a cut plug behind it. The issue would be speed. Coho generally like 2.5mph+. But with that rig you can slow way down. You would need a rod holder and I’d definitely bring an extra paddle or go with someone. You could be in real trouble and if you dropped your paddle in the water and no one was around and stuff like that happens all the time when you’re netting energetic fish.

For us without downriggers, would you say a 5oz cannon ball weight or a dipsy diver?
@kayakfishingpnw
2 ай бұрын
Funny you should mention it. I just did a video on using divers. That is my personal preference for going without a downrigger. Basically once they unclip they help set the hook and you don’t have to deal with the extra weight. I’ve seen a bunch of very convincing comments in favor of weights though. Neither is a bad option.

That’s funny I just started experimenting with a deep six diver. I just shot a video on it yesterday actually. I’ve caught a few fish with it. I miss the precision of the downrigger but divers are way easier to use, more fun to catch fish on, and have less drag in the water. Do you just put it in line? I tie my main line to it, then 4’ of mono to an 8” flasher, then 3’ of fluorocarbon to a hoochie.

When / in what conditions do you wear your dry suit?
@kayakfishingpnw
2 ай бұрын
The standard rule is any time the air temperature and water temperature don’t sum to 120 (e.g. 50 degree air, 70 degree water) you should wear one. I NEVER violate that rule. On top of that I often wear it if I expect rain, high winds, or rough seas for any other reason. So, really 65+, preferably sunny, and low wind is when I go without. It’s somewhat personal though. I know I’m very cold tolerant and a lot of people aren’t.

I notice you are not wearing a dry suit or anything. I’ve been too afraid to go out as everywhere I read people say it is dumb to go out without one. What do you have to say about this?
@kayakfishingpnw
Ай бұрын
The most common rule of thumb is to wear one any time the air temp and water temp sum to less than 120. The exception is that you should wear one any time the water temp is under 60. Since our water is typically 55-58, it’s technically always dry suit weather. That said lots of kayakers go without in the summer because it is miserably, maybe even dangerously hot to wear one on hot days. There are a couple kayak rental companies in the area and they send dozens of people out on the sound everyday with no dry suit, so it a definitely not uncommon. If you’re thinking about getting into it, I’d recommend starting by renting a kayak and seeing how comfortable you are. They give a helpful safety talk too. I also take a ton of precautions and know how I react in the cold water. Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@laylarj2012 The best thing to do is get a 3/2 farmer jon wetsuit and practice self rescue falling in and getting back on the kayak until you have it down. On the hot sunny days you wont need anything but a PFD. On the cooler days or early mornings the 3/2 and a jacket is pretty comfortable. You can always take a kayak lesson and get some info that way. Have fun!

Bad, basically. It’s usually at like a 60 degree angle when I’m going for coho. I just let out a bunch of extra line and try not to worry about it. Typical is 50-90 feet. I know that only gets me down to 30 to 60.
