I give my dog, 10 lbs, a teaspoon of honey with a tiny bit of real butter. It works really good. Vets don’t really seem to know what she has and some say reverse sneezing. I give her 1/2 of a Benadryl every day during allergy season. She always done this reverse sneeze since she was little. She’s 6 now. It wasn’t though. It’s been 1 year since my shepherd died. She had allergies and itching and I gave her allergy treats I bought. The key in my mind is it had probiotics. My little one had to have the same as Molly so I broke off a piece to give to her. The dose per pill was for my 60 lb dog. When she passed I no longer used them. Zoey didn’t have skin problems and wasn’t connecting her little cough or sneeze with allergy season. This spring, around May, she is having a bit of a hard time. She actually sneezes along with this whatever it is. I can hear snotty sounds. I’m trying some different methods to relieve the cough and I just ordered the allergy meds with the probiotics. The honey and big of butter I will likely give this to her all the time when I hear the piggy snort sound. It’s isn’t a goose sound. On videos they sound very different. I’m tired of vets not really helping and it costs so much money. Raw honey and real butter. She won’t lick up the honey without a tiny little amount of butter. I actually gave her butter when this started by itself . Worked beautifully.

Thank you for your information. I kept telling my vet for over a year about these odd sounds my dog made especially when drinking water, not necessarily as he drank but randomly afterwards, I asked for xrays and tests but we were also addressing other concerns like his back with compressing areas, a leg that is affected. So it seemed they just didn't want to deal with it. Finally this month she did xrays and compared to last year's and said collapsing trachea and gave me cough suppressants, and that was it. Gus is 11, mixed breed medium sized dog. I want to be the best parent to him because he is such a loving dog to me all these years. He loves to bark, it's his favorite past time. It's super loud, he is part karelian bear dog, and that's their thing really loud non-stop high pitched barking. I even have hearing loss due to this. I worry this is going to exacerbate the issue. So our journey begins. Thank you again.

My little obi started sneezing and reverse breathing hacking 4 months ago at the begining of hayfever season. This would happen almost every 20 min. The vet quoted $3500 to do a myriad of tests because of his age. Including sedation, which he actually died once and had to be paddled back. So just a bit weary. I asked if antihistamine would be ok to try first off. So did this and he is almost back to normal again. So I am wondering if this is allergy related as the vet would have picked up bronchitis or pneumonia on his visit?

I'm glad you had his heart xrayed and that it was negative for heart enlargement. The diagnosis is critical though before any treatment. You may have to travel a distance to a specialist or an alternative vet but that's your best bet for legitimate advice. If you find a vet that does Chiropractic then they will also be familiar with these treatments. As far as cost, your closest veterinary school will have a clinic that is budget friendly. I'm very sorry to hear about your finances but unfortunately this is likely to get a lot more expensive as your dog nears end of life. I suggest googling "veterinary funding financial assistance for low income pet owners." I'm not saying you're low-income but those are the correct keywords to find the Websites with non profits. Our Pug had this problem and it turned out to be an enlarged heart squeezing the trachea. We found out too late to get the proper medication - Vetmedin was being denied to animals during Covid-19. We spent $5000 dollars at many vets not telling us the truth and still lost her. A simple chest xray ($100) was too little too late. There are several alternative medicine vets on KZitem who talk about these things.

Omg. May undiagnosed tracheal collapse cause elevated levels of GDH? I mean could a chronic lack of oxygen due to TC cause liver damage? My 7 yrs old Chi had a bloodwork showing gdh elevated 4-fold above max. normal. AST a bit elevated, all other liver enzymes, albumine etc fine. She has been coughing like this all her life but we had mistaken it for Asthma. During her first year she had like 4-8 coughs/d, since it's like 1-3/d. We thought we had just managed to rule out most asthma triggers - but now I think her trachea might just have grown during that first year to allow for more air flow and for a bit less coughing? She has always been a rather calm dog, not very active. And pulling the leash definitely triggers a cough. Can the liver problem be related to it? Or would that require a much more severe form of TC? Thank you for this video!
@DoctorDawson
2 жыл бұрын
Each patient can be different, and I'd talk to your vet about this as they will know your pet the best. However, I would suspect the liver elevationa are most likely a separate problem, but anything is possible!

I know my dog has tracheal collapse and not congestive heart failure because my other dog, RIP, had congestive heart failure and the cough was completely different. My dog is a chiweenie, about 12 pounds, about 15 years old, and one of the issues besides coughing is incontinence when she is sleeping. It doesn't happen too often, and she won't keep diapers on. I have had a few scares where she has yelped in her sleep and then been unresponsive. So far she has come out of those episodes. I have to wonder when I should simply let her go. One odd thing. Last spring I made a car trip from WA state to CO. She didn't cough at all in the car. I am at my wits end figuring out what to do for her. And from all of the videos I have seen on this subject, there is no real treatment. She is still very enthused about meal time and treats.

And the cough was much more severe than before. It was difficult, but I had her for about 16 good years. She started off as my daughter's dog, but once she figured out how to jump on the bed, she chose me. She is back with her good buddy Ralphie now.

Get this from your vet. This medicine is not typically for tracheal collapse but for some odd reason it works off label and works well for many. It’s for dogs and I guess cats to relieve motion sickness while riding in a car to stop the feeling of coughing or gagging etc and I guess to calm them but it seems to work for trach collapse. At least it did for my shihtzu and it worked like a miracle. I prayed God would heal her so I believe he did. I saw no side effects. It’s called Cerenia/Maropitant. She takes 16mg a day. And may I say it worked in like a day or two and totally stopped her cough. I give it to her with a big dab of Manuka Honey every day. That honey is the very best honey to use and it’s expensive but its the best. I got mine at Costco. It’s from New Zealand. Use both the honey and this pill for several days and see if this doesn’t quiet down or stop it. Matter of fact I took my little furbaby off after like two weeks and she no longer coughs. It is indeed a miracle healing for her.

That was the reason he was coughing after drinking water. At first, the vet didn’t know the reason but said he did not have collapsed trachea since it would only happen with water. But because he was having vomiting and bloody diarrhea, we changed his diet to H/A (hypoallergenic) and that kind of solved all of his issues. Is your dog presenting any stomach problems? Four years ago, my chiweenie was diagnosed with tracheal collapse. At 13, her condition is deteriorating with age. To extend her life, I've focused on a nutritious diet, limited exercise, and maintained a calm environment. When she coughs, I gently tilt her head up and soothe her throat. I've ensured a clean air space with a humidifier, avoiding fragrances or smoke. The vet prescribed hydrocodone, an effective cough syrup administered as needed, providing relief while keeping her calm. As the illness progresses, honey doesn't help, hydrocodone works the best. Good luck. I hope this helps!

Lots of good information in this video! I had to put my 15 year old Bichon to sleep 3 months ago and he had tracheal collapse. He would cough continually, fall down (don't know if it was a seizure or he passed out) and lay on his back and looked like he was swimming, throw up clear fluid etc. Now my female Bichon is coughing and I don't know if this is hereditary or not. What is the prognosis for dogs with this? If they don't have a stent put in will they die from it? It sounds like from the video there are no cures just comfort measures. I hated seeing my boy suffer from this. So sad. 😔

the earlier you can start managing it, the better their long term prognosis, unfortunately there is no cure for this disease :( but most dogs can still live quite a while with it, as long as you can start some of the management techniques sooner than later, and one thing I don't think I mentioned that can make a huge difference is obesity, the heavier a dog is, the more likely they are to have significant tracheal collapse, so if you can work on weight loss, make sure you're not using a collar for walks, and if necessary start appropriate medications with your vet, you can slow down the progression and in a lot of cases they will end up dying from a different disease than tracheal collapse (not always, but often)

Lisalacy, Dogs with collapsing trachea syndrome WILL soon die from it. The only real hope is trachea replacement surgery. Even if you have to take out a loan or borrow money, the surgery is the only hope. Don't take chances with your baby.

My mom's dog was misdiagnosed with CHF and on water pills for over 6 months. While Mom was in the hospital and rehab for 3 months the dog wasn't coughing. As soon as my mom came home she started coughing again and now it was constant. Then I noticed any time mom would leave, the dog would stop coughing completely. Until she returned home then right back to non-stop coughing. The vet finally told us it could be tracheal collapse. We backed off the meds and nothing's changed so seems that is what's going on. But why does it stop when her owner leaves and so persistent when she's around?

@@dollymadeson2151 I've already determined the smoking is the initial cause but the stopping and starting is the mystery. It's only when she leaves, not when she's not smoking. And she smokes in a different room. And I'm talking immediately after she leaves she stops coughing(completely) and immediately upon her arrival back she starts again(persistently). So the question is why and how is this happening?

@@KingdomChld My current dog has it. Years ago I had another dog with it and had to be careful with anything with a scent such as air freshner, certain cleaning products which would trigger it. I had to stop wearing perfume and the coughing improved. Does the owner wear perfume or body lotion or use scented body wash, scented clothes detergent, scented hair products which may be triggering it? Worth looking into.

It's not unheard of in large dogs, but things like laryngeal paralysis and kennel cough are way more common, I'd see if your vet can take a look at her to know for sure what it is as those things all have a very different prognosis and treatment!

@@DoctorDawson your video is EXCELLENT. I'm quite sure my girl has a collapsed trachea and it is so gut wrenching to watch her "honking" etc. She's up to date with all her shots and is seen quite often at the vet (although we haven't had them address this issue and am a bit surprised they haven't mentioned it either) Unfortunately it's REALLY hard to get an appt right now as vets are sparse around here and we have to drop her off (due to Covid and they are just "squeezing her in between other appts") so she has to wait for hours to be seen 😢 and the soonest we can get her in is 5 days from now. You mentioned honey as a way to help soothe the trachea...do you have a recommendation of amount of honey per lb of my dog (does that make sense?) And is raw unfiltered the best kind? Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video and I look forward to hearing back.
@DoctorDawson

I won't give a specific amount of honey, a teaspoon is going to be just fine even for large dogs, the type I don't really have a huge preference, but raw unfiltered shouldn't be a problem

@@DoctorDawson you are incredible for replying so quickly! I didn't think I'd get a response! So my pup is about 8lb...I'd want to give her less than 1 tsp right? And would I use the honey only when she's having an "attack" or throughout the day? Thank you so much for replying

FFS why don't you people trying to help simply put up an example of a dog with these problems? Especially if there are different sounds to 'bad' coughs. This is the third vet video i've seen with no example. Thanks for the '0' help!

Agreed. Even an audio recording would have helped. Not sure what privacy issue there would be if it's just the video of the dog. The owner doesn't need to be in it.
