My sketchup skills improved greatly using your shop trailer model and modifying it to meet my needs. I learned a ton.

Phil, as far as I know all 3D drawing capabilities in Pro are also in the free version. The free version doesn't have Layout, the presentation program, or the CAD integration tools, plus the ability to create dynamic components. There may be other limitations, but this is all I know of. Make and Pro work exactly the same way, so if you start with Make and find you need the Pro features; it is an easy transition.

Thanks Ron, since the cost of Sketchup pro doesn't include training, Their tutorials and KZitem are definitely the way to go, including your vids.

Ron, thanks for the information on how you learned to use Sketch-Up. I had been wondering about that, so you read my mind. I do have a question, though. I know you use the paid version of Sketch Up in order to be able to produce 2D plans, but does Sketch Up Make have any 3D limitations that you are aware of?

Ron, Love all your sketch up videos. Quick question-how do you best go about getting a cut list? Not sure if you went over that but maybe I missed it. Thanks.

9985cjham I do all of my cut lists and takeoffs manually. When I am doing a remodel or new house, I take a full set of prints and do the takeoff on each page. I also put the sub contractor pricing on each page. It is old school, with software auto take off and even construction book pricing, but even when I was building many houses yearly, I did all my takeoffs with a pencil on the plans. I am sure with apps, there may be better ways, but it is one area I haven't explored. I did try to the takeoff module in the old CAD software I used, SOFTPLAN, but found setting it up and keeping it current was more work than manual takeoffs. I can do a takeoff on a 3000' house in about two hours, and then I have my notes and can trust the outcome.

Hi Ron, thank you for your informative videos. Can you tell me which construction management / estimating software you use. Thank you, Steve K. Spokane WA

TheWatchit45 Hi Steve, I use Apple Numbers, Pages, Apple Mail and QuickBooks Construction. In the past I scheduled with MS Project and UDA, but now I run the schedule using Apple Calendar. I am only doing a couple projects a year so the time and money to support a construction package doesn't make sense. I can run a tight project with the software I have and use in everyday live. Back when I was building 10-30 house a year, it was a much more complex issue as I had to track all resources and make sure I didn't have any of my subs double or triple scheduled. I also do all of my takeoffs with a pencil right on the plans. I am very much into technology, but it isn't always the best answer.

Can sketchup be translated into cnc code? My understanding is that the answer is yes, but it requires an awkward conversion. Even if cnc is not convenient, sketchup can nevertheless do this, and thus essentially everything. Sound OK? Thanks

Paul Mcnulty Paul, at this point I have never used a CNC machine so haven't needed to convert .skp file to one of the various CNC codes. That being said, SketchUp designs are being fabricated with CNC machines. There are plugins for SketchUp to complete the task.
