Tone pronunciation is everything. My most embarrassing moment happened while getting a foot massage. Every chair was filled so it was a busy time. I was speaking in English with the woman giving the massage. She asked where I had been. I said, “OmKoi!” All the Thai women burst out laughing. I was clueless what had happened. Later that day, I asked a Thai friend to help me understand why everyone laughed. He said, the tone I used for that city means a particular service a man may ask during a massage that would require a private room. 😮

I've only live in Chiang Mai long term (5 years) but I've spent a few months here and there in Koh Phangan. Chiang Mai is much more peaceful and chill compared to BKK in my opinion :)

How long did you live here before you felt like you had a grip on the most basic Thai conversational skills?

I think it took me at least 2-3 years or so! But I think it can def be done much quicker but I wasn't practicing consistently in the beginning. Even just being around the language in my day to day, I started to pick up on words I was hearing quite fast but it's challenging to learn because of the tones

Suggestion is to use an external microphone. Your audio level is low

The sound is generally fine. It is nice that the microphone picks up the natural background noises. Yes, sometimes the noises gets a bit loud. But we are not discussing nuclear physics here. Closed captioning works as well. YT viewers often make this much more grand than it is, like content providers are supposed to be at national television broadcasting levels. Another option, if it were a big deal, would be to record indoors. Otherwise, it is like two people chatting on a patio. Noises happen. I swear, I see 'microphone level' critics on every YT channel I view.
