Great video and information Dan! I've proven to myself that I can not only live on a 10ft jon boat, but live happily and with a budget of less than $50 a month. Less than that really, especially if I fish more. Since proving to myself that I can live with so little and be happy in such a small boat, I know that when I get a sailboat I will be even happier. As long as she is solid, floats and sails, it'll be a dream come true. The rest of features I consider luxuries that I will gladly improve over time.

Your story is so unique as well, your boat is (from what i've seen at least) something that most people would NOT consider buying for full time cruising. You've given so much great stuff on how you've improved it. I think it kind of proves that as long as the hull is solid, put enough work in and you can cruise in any boat small or big. I am trying to invent a reverse propellor generator DIY install.... i dont know what im doing. I just know what i want. This could provide 220 for laundry machine. so you could do your laundry with dishwasher as you sail. There are already small dishwashers that run 110 and small washers. you can install a dryer upside. You could put a large generator on you motor with its own clutch to run 220.00. people dont utilize the tech right in front of us. you need more sour krout. if your getting alot of protein. you need to clean your system with that k... something. you gotta eat vegies just to clean out the proteins once in a while or your arteries clog. just learned that today. i have been watching a bunch of sailing videos. non of you can yourselves. glass is not all gunna break and you could store them in a better state as they are all the same size. maybe we start a new canning diy and build a machine to do it ourselves for metal cans. dont be afraid of canned chicken or spam! I would still grow plants off the side of the boat. like tomatoes using fresh water run off when it rains and a timed sprinkler system. I would find ways to collect the rain water. Like 3 upside down umbrellas ??? that went to a different tank. another invention. put in 2 shop vacs and have an ice making machine. you can freeze salt water ice for one of the shop vacs, put it in reverse and have AC for the boat. still boil the salt water. clean the ice maker! have ice!!!! nobody has ace machines on thier boat. aloce centralized vac??? HELLO!!! you can use a small dishwasher to store your dishes.

Out of all the sailing videos, what I like the best about your videos is your humility and showing newbies how it can be done. Starting simple small and doing it to start off with is great advice, then build up. Have you looked into alternative fuels like hydrogen to run the motor?
@handroids1981
Жыл бұрын
Hello. I'm not Dan, perhaps he will answer. Unfortunately hydrogen is ... some far way off being an option. Very, very far off. That I know of it's been a "just around the corner" possibility since the 90s. All sailing vessels are eagerly waiting for the lithium replacement. As lithium is STUPID HEAVY. Generally an electric cars weight is about those thirds its batteries. Weight is the enemy of all sail craft. I hope that helps.

I have had five years aboard at a lake marina while working a full time job and several small cruises. I love saltwater cruising. It a complete life full of wonder and danger. My biggest question that no one seems to answer in full detail is when I make this lifestyle change, what is it like for people that don't want to sell their guns and keep them aboard the boat? I have 7 rifles and a handgun. What is it like to try to stay in the Caribbean with these items? I don't wish harm on anyone, and these items are probably the only things I refuse to part with. Are those Caribbean countries okay with me having them in a safe and locked away? Or is there a certain number of firearms I will be safe having? I know the laws hold for the flag and registration of the boat and if my vessel represents the U.S. that I'm from than is it okay to have these items without getting too much pressure from said country? Please hold you bias opinions to yourself and give a straight answer. I do realize there are more than a few out there that have firearms and probably won't answer because then they will give themselves away. It's tricky to get a straight answer for this subject from seasoned sailors with channels.

I would bring anything I thought I needed and not say a word to anyone. Find a good hiding place. I'd want a pistol, shotgun, and large caliber rifle. The rest I'd leave with family. Because guns are illegal in many other places, most people won't admit to having any, but I'd guess at least 50% have something. It's for you to decide if its worth the risk.

It depends where you go. I have a Daniel defense m4a1 and a gen 5 glock 19 and an old colt 1911. I did sell other guns but brought these with me. I’m sure in places it’s a problem but I have very good hiding spots in the boat if I need them. Legally I’m not positive and it varies especially in countries but I am not going around the world with nothing. I’m just not. I’ll deny deny deny and not talk about them that has helped me have no issues so far

Just got a taste of this life when I spent a week with my friend on his off grid boat, and now I’m looking for my first sailboat. Would love to hear your thoughts on starting on the west coast of Canada, vs starting in the Bahamas. Had someone tell me it would be twice as hard, and costly to liveaboard in Canada. Also on a separate note, I run a decentralized skateboarding social media platform, where we monetize skaters content to help skaters support themselves around the world, all while just consuming skating content like we normally do. And the reason why I bring that up, is I would like to expand this model to other content, such as sailing since I’m getting into it. Would basically work as a secondary income stream like patreon, but it doesn’t necessarily require to audience to pay you out of pocket, because the content is monetized based on audience votes. Either way, loved the video, and plan to make my way through the rest of your channel.

boat life is so diverse that it is difficult to explain. when you mentioned 100 of dollars per night for a marina i thought about the 200? 300? 400? dollar per YEAR i pay on the member sailclub in Linköping. of course if you go to stockholm or göteborg then it jumps to several 1000s per year for a summer / winter spot, which starts to get closer to the hotel price per night you mentioned. and yes there are marinas of different kinds (ie: the opera spot in göteborg) that also get to several 10s of dollars per night in Sweden.

You probably could have made a still and heat it from the stove to make fresh water. Also make you own liquor made from the local produce of foreign countries you visit.

Water is very good for radio wave propagation and I think that's why you can have so good cell cover in Bahamas. It's like the optimal environment for radio cover.

Great video. And beautiful boat. I've been living a nomadic lifestyle for the past 7 years. I've traveled the U.S. And Mexico on foot, bicycle and now a self built off grid van. I've just started researching my next adventure. And I'm very happy to come across your channel. And now I believe I know what I'm looking for. Thank you for the inspiration. Safe travels.

Love this, subscribed! Ever been to Harbour Island, Bahamas? I spearfish from there every year around New Years. Would love to meet up sometime! It’s a great place to ring in the new year as well! I’ve also got a dock, would have to see if it’s big enough for your boat though 😂
