Being diagnosed with cancer and then fighting to survive it made me feel “behind all my friends” too, but I’ve learned that everyone has a different timeline. About the never expecting thing, it’s also a good idea to keep in mind to “never make a permanent decision on a temporary emotion.” Whenever I feel behind, I just remember that one day, I am able to tell someone how I survived and it will be someone else’s survival guide. The whole point is, people “behind” turns out better, you are the only person responsible for your success! Hope you are well :)

Thank you Matty for sharing. Your story brought tears to my eyes because I can relate to this 100%! I've had this growing sense of hopelessness these last couple of years, on & off, but over these last couple of weeks during the holidays, the feeling was stronger than ever. In a nutshell, I'm a career changer. I graduated undergrad as an econ/finance major & worked in the commercial insurance industry for about 6 years before making the leap over to Physical Therapy, which is obviously a complete 180. I had to start from the ground up working on all of my prerequisite courses for a couple of years, while working as a rehab aide to get my experience hours in. Then of course was the waiting game after applying to PT school, rejection letter after rejection letter, but I did finally eventually get accepted into a program out in San Diego, so I had to move across the country from back home Chicago. During all of this time, I've had those bouts of feeling behind too because as I was starting over in my 30s, my friends were partnering up, making babies, buying homes, etc. I've had some bumps in the road with PT school too, which further pushed my graduation date, but my biggest challenge at the moment is trying to pass my boards. I graduated 2 years ago already but have yet to still pass my boards. I've tried so many times and have always changed up my game plan. Just feels like I'm never going to see the end of it. I've essentially been working on this career change for almost a decade, pretty much my 30s. A lot of life stuff has happened in between, & a pandemic doesn't help either, but I'm still standing. Despite these challenges, there have definitely been good things as well. I found my wife during my time out here, so it's nice to have such a supportive person on my side to help me 'keep on keeping on', even during times when I feel I've lost hope. But you're right, focusing on the journey and the day-to-day definitely helps with the mental & emotional game vs. fixating on the end results. It's about changing your perspective. I've got my next attempt coming up at the end of this month, and you guy's channel has helped me tremendously these last few months in terms of changing up my study/test strategies. Thank you!

I relate to this a good bit. I think its brave of you to switch your major up drastically doing a 180. I was in the OTA Program but failed my clinicals. Now I am majoring in Psychology and want to become a Behavior Therapist. I possibly will go back for my masters. Just not sure. But I am 23 and so many of my highschool friends are working, getting married, moving etc. I probably wont graduate for 2 more years. I just want to be done with school so I can live my life like everyone else.

I keep coming back to watch this video because I've been feeling lost, confused, and unmotivated these past few months after taking a break from college due to personal reasons. These kinds of videos are therapeutic to watch especially during the times that you don't even have an energy to do simplest tasks. Trying to apply what I've learned as a psych student but sometimes all we can do is to be brave and endure this tough times of our lives and learn from it. For sure, we'll feel proud of ourselves someday looking back on all the struggles that we've overcome. I decided to leave this comment here to lessen this overwhelming emotions of mine :)) Btw, your voice is so soothing, Matty

You can only try!

Absolutely. Hopelessness is where actual hope lives in. The emotion driven during those moments gives you time to truly reflect in one's self and enables you to realize and empathize. It gives you tid bits of pieces that solve the majority a puzzle. One of the best way is to free the mind and reflect and change its current perspective. To achieve a piece of mind, turning complicated shiz to a simple yes or no problem is generally a better idea. Nothing is too hard if you keep it simple.😁

Thanks for this video. Due to the pandemic I had to spend christmas and new year's eve away from parts of my family and my friends. This last year was really a year of things not going according to what I would have like them to be. Despite this, I stayed hopeful, looked at my achievements, counted my blessings and stayed with a happy go lucky attitude. But positive thinking can only get you so far after so many things fell flat. This video gave me ideas on how to deal with things in a better way. Thanks!

I subscribed for a while now because of the productivity and study tips. But I stayed because I grew to really look up to you and Mike. (Two likable people working towards your professional careers with systems you implement to improve your lives.) People I aspire to be like. I’m sorry you’ve been feeling hopeless. Believe me I can understand the feeling. I might be a younger version of you, you spelled out everything I’m grappling with in my own life. After years of academic success and chasing my dreams, the pandemic coincided with many failures that wrecked my hopes and ambitions, making me feel behind in life compared to all my friends. Letting go of expectations and focusing on experiences seems obvious in hindsight but I was too hung up on things I couldn’t control. Thank you for reminding me to enjoy life (while restarting life in uni). 5:14 “So if success is only based on one outcome, the odds will never be in our favor.” Where has this sentence been all my life? Edit : 6:37 i assumed that you and Mike were fraternal twins or something lol

Well done. I don't know what your influences are but you've contemplated yourself halfway towards spiritual realization. The other half is to realize that we can't control our inner experience either. Schopenhauer put it succinctly: "a man can do what he wants, but cannot want what he wants." As you go through life with the philosophy you described you might find other things other than enjoyment arising. Sadness, anger, and so on, and even again hopelessness at the very attempt to even try to enjoy life. The only thing we can do is to try to accept our experience because to change it is to not accept ourselves. Yes as you say we can try to understand the nature and causes of our thoughts and feelings. That inquiry will ultimately lead to their demise, and the arising of true equanimity

No excuses for anybody, your situation isn't worse than somebody else, it's juste a mindset. Thank you for this video, you teach us how to work, and to be happy. Wait till you get into 40s and 50s if you feel this now...you have youth and youthful cells which appears appealing to a younger women and you can integrate in a group of other youthful people and be merry with each other. Get old, you cannot. Have and hold onto good relationships and say yes to that female without too much overthinking of her personality type matching yours or that of your friends. Have a good paid job and path but don't be soo ego. You need to be at that age where you go to pubs and meet friends, not be going to sit there on your own.
