A couple of people have asked if the Thai citizenship interview was in Thai. We had been recording well over an hour and towards the last 15mins I was praying my batteries wouldn’t die which they did. However, I only lost 3 minutes and it was here that Noah told me that the whole process involved speaking Thai. What surprised me was that all the paperwork was filled out by the Thai authorities so he didn’t have to write anything.

The entire process is in Thai, which makes sense. There was a multiple choice test of a few questions e.g. 'Chiang Mai province is in which region of Thailand?' that took place at McDonalds. They are planning on moving the whole process to the Ministry of the Interior with a full test to elementary school Thai reading/writing/listening (P6) which will cut down the already small numbers that can get citizenship (currently about 300 per year, I think). If you are married, you don't have to sing the National Anthem! The cost was 5,000 Baht, plus 500 for the certificate. If anyone out there qualifies with the three year Work Permit/tax and is either married or has PR, I suggest they get in quick.

Fascinating interview Pete, kept me listening to every word. Well done both of you! Time certainly passes rapidly in this part of the world, as we see from decade to decade just how much change happens, even in my little village. Twenty years ago, it was semi-rural, with goats and cattle munching grass outside my house several times a week as the local shepherd brought them by. Now we're surrounded by traffic and 3 storey buildings. I can easily see how having a foot in the door of a new communications opportunity can escalate into huge advantage in a few short years.

I stumbled across your site when you did your interview with Steve Rosse that you dud and I like and follow his site too. I just saw this interview that you did with Noah and I just wanted to say to you I think it was absolutely wonderful. I think your guest was most interesting, had great insight which is backed up by his success here his learning how to fit into and respect this culture, and the fact that he now has Thai citizenship. It was easy to listen to and interesting from beginning to end and I think young man, you're doing a good job! I won't go into a lot of personal detail, but I am 83 years of age and have live now in Thailand for the last28 years was a hotelier, bur no doubt that I regrettably still do not speak Thai well. Fascinating watch. I missed when Noah started Visit Laos Year. Research online shows that was around 2017. Is that right?
