@phoerens

Hey, normal map is fine for small objects or games, but the big and detailed stuff it's better to have displacement + normal map. The displacement will ad the most details it can(but don't overdo do it because it subdivided the geometry during tender) , but the last fine details can best be added with normal maps

You did good on your character! I love how we can shape these cool creatures from simple shapes. Mainly why I love 3D modeling. Also, question. Just curious, what kind of material did you use for your creature in maya?
@phoerens
2 жыл бұрын
thanks ! Yes sometimes for simple shapes it's better to just model it because in Zbrush you can often go too quickly into the details and the result won't be smooth.. And I used a redshift standard material. Basically for every render engine you use the standard material, it's the one that can handle the most things (sss, specular, refraction..)
@sierracook3343
2 жыл бұрын
@@phoerens So you did the materials in zbrush? Or in maya? I'm asking because I'm having trouble baking my maps from my highpoly mesh to my lowpoly mesh
@phoerens
2 жыл бұрын
@@sierracook3343 if you watch the video until the end you can see that I made the maps in substance painter, and plugged them into a redshift material in Maya. In zbrush i just made the highpoly mesh

@@phoerens Yeah I noticed. I've never done it that way before. I actually tried doing the high poly in mudbox. But it wasn't perfect when I tried exporting the high poly textures.

vector displacement is great in that you don't have to manually retopologize his scales. You can have a simple model that you apply a scale map to, but in the video you no longer show how you got the scales into the substance painter. They appear to be there as real geometry, which doesn't make sense.
@phoerens
Жыл бұрын
Yeah I didn't show that,sorry. I actually just took the second or third subdivision from zbrush and used that as my substance painter model. That allowed me to still have the good uv's, and keep a preview of the displaced mesh Because if I textured with the flat mesh I couldn't know where to paint my textures on the extruded parts 😅

@@phoerens So basically .. it should take 1 to 2 days to finish 3D art piece .. or does it depend on the project ? Like .. how do you know that you're taking enough time or too long to finish an art piece ?
@phoerens
2 жыл бұрын
@@bara_abudhair it really depends, this one took me a day, but I made other projects that took me weeks or even a month And it's quite simpel, if you want to show it on artstation, make good renders of it and show it on your portfolio, you should spend more time on it. The ones I make for this channel are not over detailed because I want to make one every week, so I basically have the weekend to make one and if I don't finish I work on it in the evening during the week But basically, it's finished when you're satisfied with it that's all that matters
