You could add first aid about what to do if you get stung by one. I just found out recently to make a paste out of baking soda and water and applying it to the sting area. It works and is awesome. Loved your unit and never heard of that Science show.

Thank you so much for this video. I have decided to do unit studies in the new school year for my kids and this is so simple and straight forward. I plan to do a theme right through the year called "What makes New Zealand?" and then do mini unit studies on all the reason my children and I love our country. Your video has given me such a boost and I feel that it is going to be so much fun. I will be able to start planning with confidence now that I have seen step by step how you do it. xx Belinda.

Thanks for sharing MonsonSchoolHouse. I always struggle with breaking topics/subjects down and knowing where to start and what the kids need to learn .... I always over think it and make it far more complicated than I need to I think. So, I have found this helpful. Thank you x

I found your video today for the first time and I love it! It was so helpful, thank you so much for sharing. I have been homeschooling almost two years now and we have began using unit studies more and more after following Pepper and Pine. We are watching you from Australia and can't wait to see the next lesson and finished lapbook.

Excellent!! I really enjoyed watching you put together your unit. The DK book looks like a complete guide to bees. And I can't believe I missed the Scholastic bee book!! I need to add that to our wishlist straightaway. This planning video is great and will surely help many people. I'd definitely say continue making them :) -Hana

I was having one of those hard homeschool days (and ready to delete all my social media accounts out of frustration.. hehe), then I saw your comment and you turned it around for me! Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! Do you even realize that YOU totally inspired me to do unit studies?! Yes you did! I LOVE your unit study videos!! I need to look into the Waldorf method that you do more, I haven't really studied it but I just kind of followed your lead with the "main lesson" idea and it's totally working with mutiple age kids.

Girl, you are doing awesome with your unit studies!! Keep it up. You're making 'evergreen' content that will help homeschoolers for months and years to come. Your approach is valuable to the homeschooling community because you are showing how to depart from the curriculum just enough to do a unit study, but keep the curriculum so you can jump back into it after the unit study is done. You've pulled together some great resources, and I can see that both you and your kids are enjoying it!! Your lapbooks are fabulous :) I thrilled to pieces comment kept your from deleting your social media accounts. I can understanding having tough and frustrating days, but you are an asset to the homeschooling community, so stick around!! -Hana

Both of you mommas are helping me so much you will never know. I am getting ready to homeschool for the first time and am learning so much from each of you about organization, lesson planning and organization. You both have such positive, lovely attitudes that I can't get enough of. Thank you so much. Much love from Canada!!!!

I am done with my first year and I am nervous AGAIN, for this upcoming year! I think the nerves will never leave (just like they were ever present with each ballet performance I did. even after 100 shows the nerves still were there). The nerves will go away after everything is planned and in place, and once you are actually doing it you will be like "I was nervous for this!?" You will ROCK IT!

we do unit studies once in a while mainly because it's so hard for us to find good material (books) to go with a study and cover a broad range of ages. you nailed it with these books! can you please give other ideas for unit studies and how you narrow down your book choices? thank you!

sure! I love doing unit studies for Science, and we do science in the Spring (history in the fall). This 2017-2018 school year we are going to do Astronomy, Ants, and a Nature study! I am sure I will add a couple more based around my kids interests too !

Super interested in unit studies! Is there more to your unit study besides the lapbook? This is our first year homeschooling so I have NO experience but I was under the (possibly wrong) impression that when you do a unit study, all the subjects kind of revolve around that topic, so writing, reading, history(?), everything as much as possible. But maybe not? I'd love to see the rest of your unit study and how the lapbook turned it, I looked at your subsequent videos and never found anything more about your bee unit.

I know, I am so sorry I never posted an update on this whole unit :( ... you can do unit studies however you like! When I do a unit study for history I tie my reading assignments into that. But for science I just add a read aloud book or an art or craft. I don't revolve my entire day and everything around the unit study, or I think I might go crazy trying to plan it all out, just not enough time in my day for that! But I am sure some homeschoolers do that and I bet it works so wonderful for them. again, each family is different so do what works best for you. thanks for watching!

How long do your units usually last? just a couple of weeks? or does it depend on the unit? I'm exploring doing units like this- that I put together myself instead of following a curriculum! :)

Love this video! I'm tying to add unit studies and didn't know where to start...thank you! How long do you spend per day or per week on a unit? Have you ever used unit studies for language arts or math? I'm sure I could incorporate some language arts in that bee unit:)

Unit study is a group lesson for us and is usually an hour (sometimes 1.5 hours if there is an activity or craft in the lesson). I don't do unit studies for math, but I have done a poetry unit in the SPring and it was so fun!

Hi! Thank you for posting this great how to with great resources. Do you allocate 1 lesson per day? How many weeks on average is a unit study? I've been trying to plan some for the upcoming school year, but I am unsure how long I should make them. Thanks!
@monsonschoolhousewithmikae2903

Angela, I do 1 lesson a day. no more than an hour per lesson. and I have found 6 weeks to be about the right length for a unit study, but when it comes to specific units like "bees" and "butterflies", I keep it at 2-3 weeks.

I've been really feeling like I need to switch over to unit studies. We kind of do that already but I want to take the full plunge! Do you think it would work for my daughter who will be in 8th grade?
@monsonschoolhousewithmikae2903

I function better with unit studies and my kids learn better. I think 8th grade should be fine, just pair unit studies with deep literature that aligns with what you are teaching, this is what I love to do!

MonsonSchoolhouse I was thinking of having the literature pieces function as our spine. We kind of do that already, we just want to drive even deeper. We go through a book a month.

I really want to like your channel but you repeat yourself often. I need a concise only say what you need to kind of video. I know you have great tips in there somewhere but I cant watch the whole thing. I have no idea what a lap book is and it took a long time for us to get to that. I hope this helps. I dont mean to be mean.

teaching 4 kids all day I repeat everything about 100 times, so I'd say I am doing pretty good on these videos with only a couple repeats ;) you can skip through my videos, I know I am annoying and I don't have time to edit out my annoyingness... thanks for watching !! I will try to do better
