I had forgotten about the bags of sugar with the dipping lollipops! The 80s were not good for food. I can see how my bad childhood diet was part of my 'terrain' issues in getting sick as an adult. I'm still working on my sugar addiction, but I make so much more progress when I stick with sugar free. It seems to really help my liver being off the sugar. I gave up smoking, weed, caffeine, alcohol, wheat and all grains but sugar has been the hardest of them all to quit!

Im going on 6 years with M.E now. Have improved but still along way to go. I had to go in a restrictive diet for months because I was histamine intolerant and my face and body where swelling from eating mist foods. Covered in hives and itching like mad and fever's so many symptoms. I completely cut out sugar, I was a complete sugar addict so it was so difficult but your face swelling has a way of restraining you. I lost a stone in weight and felt so much better the craving eventually went,also my allergies got better and I brought food back into my diet. I'm back to eating sugar and eating so much daily back to putting on weight, insomnia getting worse etc. So after watching your video I will stop eating sugar again. Iv done it once I can do it again.

This was excellent! Thank you so very much for sharing. I’ve had ME/CFS for almost 2 decades and made many lifestyle adaptations. A clean diet is at the top of my list. Yet for me, having a few small Simple Mills chocolate chip cookies or a few squares of Hu Kitchen dark chocolate every day or 2 really gives me loads of pleasure without taking me down the “rabbit hole” of a sugar relapse. I even occasionally have a vegan ice cream from Daily Harvest! But I always make sure to have these samplings at the END of a meal. Never on an empty stomach. I try to eat my treat mindfully. Would I love to never have a sweet indulgence? Yes. Probably. But I’ve found the little treats make no difference in my health, and with these healthier swaps, my blood sugar stays steady and I’m happier! Feel less deprived. Thanks for all you do!

Thanks for sharing your story! Can relate to many aspects. Yes, getting into the habit was also huge for me. Also, finding ways to manage the feeling of letting others down when saying "no thanks", and looking at what I was using the sugar for (the function of the behaviour of eating the sugar) and asking myself that I really needed (for example the need to feel I was treating myself, the need to boost my engery, the need to enjoy something sensory) 🙏😊 PS. Love how you share personal memories and use humour and show your personality in your videos 😁

Hey Elin! Nice to hear from you and I hope you are doing well 💛 You make SUCH great points. There is a social component to this too for sure. People show love with thier baked goods and by turning them down we can feel like we are insulting others. The behavior aspect is also massive. I suspect I could do ten more videos on this topic! There's so much to consider. And thanks for your kind words and letting me know you enjoy how I make the videos! That means a lot 😁

I’ve been pretty addicted to sugar since childhood, maybe not quite as serious as yours but very close! I like your theory about that army of sugar loving microbes in our gut! I’ve been making kombucha and milk kefir for a while now, will start making my own sauerkraut soon. I’m sure it’s helped my gut hugely and dampening down the sugar cravings. Got a way to go yet though! I love your channel, you’ve helped me so much in my recovery journey (about 50% recovered!). Wendy from New Zealand 👏👏👏

Well done Raelan! I, too, used to wake up hungry during the night, right up until a year ago when I got Covid. My hobby was baking and I’d dream all week about what I was going to bake at the weekend. I’ve managed to stop my sugar cravings by 1. intermittent fasting (I eat between 10:00 and 18:00) and 2. having a bowl of porridge (oatmeal) with berries and seeds for breakfast. I only ever feel hungry now between 09:00 and 10:00 each day. I’ve also started taking kimchi and a vegan kefir, so maybe that has also helped.

I can relate to your story! I was a teen in the 80's. My mom kept a cookie jar full of cookies. I would often sneak cookies in the middle of the night. She also had ice cream in the freezer and I would have some after school. I remember trying to diet in my teens and eating otter pops ( I didn't need to diet, I needed to get off of junk food). I do use some stevia on my oatmeal in the morning. Sugar really bothers me and has for years even before I got sick. It just makes me not feel good. I have to even be careful with dates. I need to really work on eating probiotic rich foods each day!
@RaelanAgle

Yes!! Kathy we had the cookie jar too, often with homemade chocolate chip cookies in it. I know my mom did it as a way to show love for the family, it's too bad we knew so little about sugar back then. I would love to do your same idea and just leave to go live abroad and start over fresh to help my battle with it all. I also have 2 autoimmune illnesses now as well! Been working on my veggies and fermented foods too....sigh! I have been soooo addicted emotionally as well to sugar.

I would have been right there with you in the running for worst sugar addict. I make my own kefir, very strong, and drink about 2.5 cups of it daily. I believe it has healed my gut microbiome. Unfortunately for me, although it helped it did not fix my addition, which I believe to be dopamine driven. A really great cookie, cupcake, etc triggers a rush of dopamine in my brain that is quite intense. I can't have any sugar in my house at all. In my case I think cutting it out completely is my only option. I try to tell myself I will only have dessert occasionally in restaurants for example and then the cycle of wanting ever more, more, more sugar starts again. For me it's like a smoker who quits and then smokes one cigarette and is hooked again. I don't know if I will ever be able to have sugar to be honest. Fruit I am OK with, especially berries. Fruit juice and raisins, no way. Raisins and pineapple juice in particular are like cocaine for me. I wish I could be hypnotized to hate sweets lol.

I was totally sugar free in all forms for my twenties under practitioner advice. I was still chronically sick however and still had an upset microbiome. What I eventually learned is that if the body is in a frequent state of flight/fight the body can still release enough glucose to keep things like Candida well fed. We're not just what we eat, we're how we eat. Btw: it's thought that whilst Stevia doesn't kill off the good guys/bacteria it stops them from communicating effectively so should be used in moderation.

Very good advice, thank you Raelan. I am not using sugar at all at this moment except for honey, that I use as an antibiotic when ill. I can not even drink like a lemon water or any fruits. If honey and fruit cravings are sugar cravings then I'm guilty😅🤭 Best thing for me was distancing myself from my family's conditioning. Both by living abroad & having my own kitchen, but also when I was living with them I kept this mindset of not eating what they were eating. Didn't always work, but now, I am actually able to say no to really tempting treats in a social setting. All because I know now what feels better for my body & it has to do with taste buds as well. I think not eating sugar makes less sugary things taste sweeter. Like fruits and honey. Still sugar in it but it's really not as problematic as refined sugar is...

Thank you for another great video. I gave up sugar with an Alan Carr ‘Easy way to quit Sugar’. I used this also for alcohol. Alcohol was way easier to stop completely! I’d given up sugar for about 5 months. Which even meant all shop bought sauces and dressings. Then one day I ate a sweet and woke up the sugar monster.... Been addicted ever since. I am currently addicted to those 1980s sherbet dips that you mentioned. I haven’t touched alcohol in nearly 5 years. Easy, but sugar! So thank you. I need to sort this out. You looking so healthy, vibrant and beautiful has really inspired me. Really glad you spoke about this.

I'm a little confused. While you were at home you found the battle to resist sugar really difficult but when you went travelling to SE Asia you were able to starve your bad gut microbes by resisting sugar. I've been to SE Asia and there are convenience stores on every corner selling sugary soda, candy bars and sugary treats. How did you suddenly have the willpower to resist sugar in a hot and humid climate where your energy levels were arguably worse than back in the USA?
