I understand the aversion to paying but the expectation that every app is free or nearly is what got us into this algorithm problem in the first place.
@jenHry-ng3pw

The problem is even if you pay, they still want to maximize your time spent in the app and addiction to it, because there is higher chance you pay if you are addicted.
@owenjenkinsofficial
2 ай бұрын
@@jenHry-ng3pwthat’s not what he’s saying. He is saying that all the best social media and games were made free because the general public prioritized free apps when phones first came out because they were more accessible or didn’t want to pay. These companies realized that if they made their apps free to make them appealing, and they could compensate that loss monetarily with data collection, and that incentivized creating addictive algorithms that allowed them to scrape far more than just basic data but all the way up to behavioral patterns per advertising ID and patterns and consistent interests that you engage with. And that ironically created a more consistent form of revenue because then they can turn around and use that data and patterns to help you sell products to the general people… for a small fee, eventually motivating the continual evolution of algorithms on social media especially.

I'm worried about the cyber safety of some of these apps. From what I understand dumbing apps take a lot of permissions to work fully, which means if you have any information linked to your phone such as MFA or banking (Banking I wouldn't recommend anyway ) the apps have access to some of that data or even just screen actions. I've heard of apps before that can watch what you do on your screen and giving one app permission to lord over any/all other apps raises some red flags for me. I could be wrong though, does anyone else know anything about safety concerns with trying to dumbify a phone? I agree that dumbing a smartphone is the better option compared to getting an entirely new dumbphone.

@Reysu Thank you, very good advice. Would love to see a follow-up video for how to implement these strategies for your kids. We’ve tried setting up different configurations for apples screen time a million times in this household, but the most addicting apps (like youtube), always seem able to bypass our rules. Also, I would love for my kids to actually be able to master their own screen time, instead of me forcing it upon them. That said, here in our home, it really is our kids who are the most vulnerable targets to screen time addiction, because so many social media and gaming apps constantly try to get them addicted to either doom scrolling or some sort of reward-driven dopamine hunt. Thanks!

It's kind of deceitful for these apps to call themselves launchers...you can't install launchers on iOS, that's a fact. These apps pretend to be launchers, but really they are just a app that apply a wallpaper and widget to your home screen and maybe install a routine for the light a dark mode. It's easier to just buy Widgy and create your own widgets, which allow you to set light and dark mode wallpapers and text, and then just create a routine to change the light/dark mode at designated times. The reason why more things are free on Android is because instead of being in a close system, Android users will run either Google, Samsung or Open Source applications depending on their privacy levels. The more sensitive users are to security and privacy the more those users will lean towards open source apps. This allows users to have full control and responsibility for their security and privacy.
