I read this a couple of weeks ago and ordered lights and a mini-greenhouse kit with the rehydratable pellets from Menards. They had way better prices than what I found locally. It just arrived yesterday and I have seeds on the way. Can't wait to get started! I appreciate the clear information. It helped me figure out what I need and not get bogged down in choices.

Helpful tip: pour boiling water over your seed starting mix in a big bowl or container, so that you kill any bug eggs so that you don't have them chewing away at your seedlings roots. The eggs still come in pkg. jiffy mix and any other bagged soil. You get two birds with one stone because then your mix is moistened as well.

Do an In Ground greenhouse. Dig down 6 feet, use tires for the retaining walls ( get them free at junk yards), use cattle panels for the roofing with 2x4's for support, cover with good greenhouse plastic -growers solutions or use the clear wavy roofing stuff. This way the roof will be lower and you can get an use tie down straps , also growers solutions. Check on pentrest . Easy to do. Thanks. Stay safe and warm. God bless

Use space/thermal blankets to wrap around your lights on 3 sides, letting them hang down freely around the shelves. This will bounce light back onto your seedlings and reduce any issues with diffuse light or the lights being too far. Peppers especially will thank you!

Such a fan of peet pellets. I found them when I was starting a science observation teaching module for my eldest son when he was 18 months old (homeschooling). It came in a covered tray kit so we took pictures and measured the growth of each type of seed. It was his intro to nurturing something you need. I have never used them for starting cuttings though. Triple mix soil (ha, with peet) has been sufficient. My grandpa was from a family legend of Irish Pioneers whom settled Canada as potato farmers. He used composted soil, a heat lamp (before heat pads) and natural light. He breed hamsters for local pet store for a retirement income. He had the cages next to his seeds. He said when the conditions are right, they will all do fine. Kept him diligent on that I suppose.

I just watched your seed starting set-up in your basement. I started my own plants for most of my live (I am now 74) and I have a tip for you. I found that my seed starts were much happier with a double flourescent light that had one warm white bulb and one cool white bulb. They were much more happy than with just two of either bulbs. Try it!

Lol, your description of what you'd need in a greenhouse had me cracking up! Nuclear bunker style greenhouse, haha, can't wait to see what that looks like one day! I'm sorry about the calf, but very happy you guys could save mama. Thanks for keeping it real, as always! Can't wait to finally meet you at the HOA this year!

Thanks for the tips...Maybe a tip for you guys: didn't read all the comments but wanted to say if you haven't seen or heard about it check out Geothermal Greenhouses (basically digging into the ground running tubes through the ground and keeping the temperatures regulated [efficient and year round]). Hope that would be of some use to you in your guys planning.

I've heard of people building greenhouses that are partially underground. That should work well in a high wind area, but excavation might be a deal breaker for some.

Great video. . . I'm a neighbor to the North in Montana. I'm a new subscriber and have been binge watching videos and blog reading. I found you from Lisa @farmhouseonboone. I'll go read the blog post to see if you mention where you buy your lights. You mentioned sustainable pots. . . I collect toilet paper/paper towel/Christmas wrapping rolls and use them, just plop em in the ground when they are ready. (it don't get more hill~billy than that. . hahaha) I left you a message on your raised bed blog post about using soybean meal as a natural fertilizer. It's the best !!

Jill, get a bag of worm castings from Amazon and mix it with your seed starting soil before you fill the trays. You won’t believe how strong your seedlings will grow! I do 7 cups of soil to 1 cup of castings. Mix it in a mixing bowl, add some water, mix again and fill your trays.

When you start harvesting your garden, will you make a video on how to store your harvest for long term? Like your cabbage, other than sauerkraut? We had our first garden last year and a lot of our squash went to waste because I didn’t blanch them before freezing and they just turned out bad.😂 I love how you are living your life! Hoping to start my own homestead with livestock and big gardens when I get out of nursing school!❤️

New subscriber from Southwest Wyoming. I love finding people who learn to make things work in this beautiful state! I started my seeds end of February, now my dining room is full of galvanized pots. Anything that goes is our basement is forgotten about. I’m going to have pumpkin vines running into our living room🤪 I do have a greenhouse, but only certain things can be started in it because you know...Wyoming... Good luck with your garden this year!

Same thing, but with watermelon vines here. We are in Montana and they would never have enough time to grow if we didn't start them inside. Our best year of pumpkins was when we started them inside. They were growing up the mini-blinds!

I like the peat pellets also. They are small and I can fit a lot on my single heat mat...but I don’t love having to keep buying more. Also, once the seeds sprout you have to transplant them pretty quick- it’s a lot of extra work.

Shoot with living where you are I would just double up your shelving in your basement. Get more lighting and more heat if needed and keep doing what you doing. Why go through the trouble of a greenhouse when it’s not a sturdy structure and not capable of withstanding Armageddon?

I totally get your greenhouse dilemma. I do my starts in the basement, on a shelf with grow lights and a heat pad. Our winds on Whidbey Island get pretty epic, and I have seen to many casualties of other gardeners green houses destroyed. Ours too will need to be a bomb shelter to survive...not a priority now. Thanks for the video...love your realism.
