USMLE is going to pass/fail in 2022, but, at least for the next two years, it will continue to be used as the most important tool for screening residency applicants. Step 1's importance stems from the fact that residency programs can receive 3-4k applications each cycle due to the electronic application process. These programs simply do not have the resources to go through each application and so they use a screener, currently, Step 1 scores. I speculate that Step 2 will become the new screening tool after 2022.
For those taking the exam before the transition, I would like to detail what I did to score a 259. Scoring above 250 is the general benchmark to get into the residency program of your choice. In this video, I go through the resources that I used, the things I did well, and what I wish I would have done differently.
The resources that I used:
(1) First Aid: www.usmle-rx.com/products/ste...
(2) Anki: apps.ankiweb.net/
(3) Sketchy: sketchymedical.com/
(4) UWorld: www.uworld.com/step1/step1_ho...
(5) NBME: www.mynbme.org
What I did well:
(1) Use FirstAid to study along with class
(2) Turning FirstAid into Anki decks
(3) Starting to study early: The summer between first and second year
(4) Using NMBE exams to practice my timing
What I wish I did differently:
(1) Start using UWorld early
(2) Use FirstAid to follow along in class from day 1
(3) Start turning FirstAid into Anki decks from day 1
(4) Start using NBME exams earlier
