The content of Sean’s latest video is excellent. I want to call attention to his delivery of his very useful information and insights. It is no mean feat to sit on a couch and talk directly into a camera for over twenty minutes and keep an audience engaged. If you think otherwise try it sometime. Sean has the discipline to always be making eye contact with the camera lens. Why? Because that’s where the viewer is. To do that and keep track of what he is saying and what he’s going to say next is easier said than done. Of course there are a few well chosen cutaways but the bulk of his presentation is just himself sitting on a couch having a conversation with a camera lens. Sean’s technique is simple but not simplistic. I’m very grateful that he maintains such high standards in his work. Well done.

Great insight to your process. On the subject of sales, I was one of those with no clue on what volume of sales I could expect, so I ran it as a Kickstarter project, then I knew how many orders I had to fulfil as well as how many extra copies I could order while still ensuring I’d made a modest profit. Worrying I’d be lumbered with a load of copies I couldn’t sell and wasted money on was putting me off doing it. Kickstarter made sure it happened and I’m so pleased with it. Seeing my images in print was the most satisfying element of the whole process.

If you use Lightroom, you can use a smart collection instead of moving images around in folders. I use a system of stars to rank images in the year and then create a smart collection of all the 5 star images for the year. Then, I assign a keyword (e.g. yearbook) to the ones that are candidates for the book and create a second smart collection of book candidates. From there, it's a simple matter of adding/removing the keyword to zero in on 40 photos for my book. It beats moving photos around or duplicating photos. Your photos can stay in the folders belonging to the shoot that created them.

That's kind of more efficient and Lightroom generally is as much a cataloguing software as it is for editing... but it also means your rankings etc. won't be a available outside of Lightroom, that's what I don't like about it. It's not really possible to Switch between multiple devices, especially if some of them don't support Lightroom. For the others, you still need to sync the catalog all the time

🇨🇦 Hey there, Sean. I used to design book covers for my brother's publishing company, back in Canada. I appreciate your take on this. A photography book is definitely very tricky and a lot of care (and sometimes anxiety) goes into its production. Definitely 90 images is AMAZING. Thomas Heaton's hardcover is just over 50 and it is quite substantial in the hand! I hope you have a chance to see it and talk with him about its production. I also hope that you feel confident in producing a coffeetable monograph soon. In the meantime think I'll pop over to your book site right now. One last possibility for your viewers is print-on-demand websites. SOME are quite reasonable quality. Heading over to your site now. Cheers, bro! (OH DEAR... VISA debit seems not to work international. Too bad you don't have the PayPal option.)

Thank you for this information. I appreciate the info your videos give as well as the time it must take you to edit them. Thank you I wonder how you estimate your profit margin for your books. The small costs that factor into the the full production of a book must be high. What matrix do you use to set your pricing for your photos and published works? Where is your cutoff line. Rent, car payments, food on top of the costs to produce a book can all be factors in the pricing but at some point that may become counterintuitive if you actually want to sell a product. Where do you draw the line regarding the proving of your works? Again, thank you for this channel.
@seantuck
3 жыл бұрын
You have to work that out for yourself I'm afraid, but I would suggest that the costs of the printing are only a small part of what you're charging for. Hopefully you value your photography and the hours it's taken to create it more than the paper it's printed on, and that's something to think about when putting your pricing together. I'm not necessarily a big fan of working from your budget backwards; I talk about this in my video on 'pricing and clients'. Good luck.

I would start from a poster. I've printed a photo of my daughter in A0 size and framed it put on the wall a few years ago. It looks amazing. I love it (but she hates it, though). It is definitely different from on a monitor and shared it with Google Photo or any sort. The printing cost and that size of the frame cost a bit, but it was worth it. "Print" seems obsolete in this digital age, but it is not.

At the very least we should remind ourselves that, in the past, we all kept photo albums. If we went somewhere, or did a specific shoot, we always printed and placed prints into an album. Why have so many stopped doing that? One disaster and the loss of the digital and it is as if it never happened. In my limited opinion, at the very least, practice making zines by just making personalised photo albums if needs be. Nothing is wasted.

This is a very good, concise summary of the primary considerations for creating a book-like collection of one's work, Sean. Well-done! As a veteran of several such projects, and being up to my chest in two projects as I write this, it resonated with me. I would also second Huw Morgan's general suggestion to use Lightroom's extremely powerful passive "smart collection" capabilities to aid in gathering work for such projects. It's absolutely indispensable.

Fantastic appraisal of self publishing Sean. Some people actually think its easy, but you've covered all the bases here and told it like it is. I haven't actually attempted a zine yet, certainly not with the intention of selling, though I have made several one-off books for my own use, and bought Zines from people like yourself and Josh. But the whole process as you have laid out here is an enticing prospect of something I may pursue! It also illustrates the efforts and steps your have to go through, along with how the costs need to be justified in the selling price. Great work, and many thanks for the inspiration. Cheers, Ray.
