Great video. I use the same method with the Harbor Freight 1x30. I bought finer sanding belts, up to 2000 grit for polishing. Works nice!

@@peterbiltknifeguy It works well and has a strop belt that works well but I like my ol'school Barbers strop. What grit belts do ya like I see 1 & 2K offered.

@@cw2a for just sharpening I like 1k. If I need to completely rework a blade edge like Ontario 😂🤦🏻♂️ I start at 120 grit and work my way up

Really nice job there brother. I was wondering what your process was to get them sharp enough to cut those standing tubes. My problem is I get em to that toothy working edge and then stop. My hands shake a bit due to neuropathy so trying to cut tubes is....frustrating as I knock em over before they are cut. I may come back and rewatch the belt portion cause I am eying one of those at Harbor Freight....never had one before but I really want one.

Yeah I need to get my hands on some of those thousand grit belt sadly they don't sell them at the place I normally buy them at I'll definitely see if I can order a couple and I definitely agree on my good knives I prefer to use a sharpening stone or a porcelain sharpening rod on cheap knives for axes and hatchets I use the same belt sander

I use this on expensive knives too. The worn out belt takes off VERY little steel and makes a almost polished edge

I'm really surprised that you didn't use a lower grit before going to the 1000. Great video, but a little too much rambling.😅

Lol. The grit progression really only helps when hand sharpening. Belts move so much more metal quickly that it doesn’t matter as much

do u have to take your angle guide off to change belts? I'm trying to understand how you would do it without?

@@peterbiltknifeguy I chopped the complete back off the table and extended the cut out for the belt about an inch and a half deeper...and mounted 2 x 45 degree inside angle brackets to the table top... so now I can angle the table up towards the belt and use my digital angle guide to lock in anything from 15 degrees to whatever...very stoked and couldn't of done it without borrowing your layout and tweaking it for myself. Great channel and thanks again brother... I just stropped a knife using the leather belt on the 1x30 and it's a razor blade now! I was having a hard time getting a paddle strop to do anything but full my blade.. I'm very much a beginner... but the 1x30 with your style angle guides and a leather belt with some white compound just turned this blade into a razor blade...again thank you so much for all the info!!!

What's the angle that you cut on your angle iron piece bolted to the table?

I’m not sure. But the platen is adjustable. So it honestly doesn’t matter. You could probably do just a 90°
