The world is certainly changing. I remember when "sustainable fashion" meant keeping your clothes cleaned and pressed (if needed) along with not following trends that someone else set-up for us to follow. Thank you for opening my eyes, but now they won't close!

Just found your channel and love it. If you haven't already, you should check out mariclaro. They are based in Toronto and make bags purses and wallets out of reclaimed leather from old cars. It's not vegan but it's leather that is just sitting in a scrapyard otherwise. Keep up the good work!

So glad I stumbled across your channel! I am a fashion design major with my focus hopefully being in sustainability and possibly fair trade. Ironically my own clothing is one of the last aspects I need to work on improving in my life as far as being eco consious and ethical goes. I've been working on making the transition for a while now, but I can tell that your videos will be really helpful!

Tara E. That's so awesome!! I also studied fashion and focused on sustainability - it definitely makes you realize how many insane issues there are in the industry. Best of luck with your studies and wardrobe transition! It can take a while (I'm still in the process of slowly replacing things) but it's totally worth it to know you're supporting conscious and ethical practices. And working in the industry you can also have a huge impact from within! Looking forward to following your channel too! :)

My Green Closet Oh I know what you mean. Within my first semester I had read a few articles that totally opened my eyes, and now I'm currently reading Overdressed by Elizabeth Cline which is basically a catch-all when it comes to discussing fast fashion's impact. And honestly I was planning on doing some spring cleaning soon anyway, so now is actually a good time to seriously focus on transitioning!

I live in Australia and use Shop Ethical app. It rates clothing, personal care products, food, etc by their degree of ethic. Clicking on each brand gives more detail on how the rating came about, its parent company, etc. They also have a website and publish a portable booklet for consumers. Highly recommended!!

Very good advice on how to buy items. I noticed myself that ideas on what I would like vary depending on the mood or trends, so I wait it out, go for a check-up window shopping, make a list what I found there, go back and rethink. I do buy leather shoes if as they are made out of cows that people (and me sometimes) eat and leather is much more bio degradable and much more durable than synthetic leather. Also, my one foot is longer than the other and I need the flexibility of leather to help the shoe adjust to it. I do only buy shoes that I will wear daily, I own 8 pair of shoes in total (sport shoes included!) for the whole year but they last for many years.

This is so great! I am moving back to Canada from 3 years in North Africa, and basically need a whole new wardrobe. I am committed to buying ethical pieces, and your channel has really helped me in figuring out where to get the things I have decided I need for my capsule wardrobes. Also, I will be cleaning out my makeup bag too, and wanted to know what lipstick you're wearing!

These are great tips. Very accesible, as sometimes I feel like eco shopping can feel very overwhelming. I find with my capsule wardrobe it gets wrecked:( I have school aged kids and work in a school. It can be tough to keep nice clothes nice you know?! Any advice is much appreciated. I really enjoy your videos.

Claudine Lo Hmm that can be difficult. I think it's best to find clothing made from good quality, durable materials. Cotton is usually a good option because it's comfortable and can be easily washed and treated for stains and stuff like that. Clothing with patterns and prints is also good because it hides wear and small damage better than solid colors do. I'm also planning to do a clothing care video in the next month or so, with hopefully some helpful tips. :) Thanks or commenting!

Have you heard of the reformation? (Have I asked you that before?) what do you think of the brand? I've been snooping on their website for ages hoping they'll bring out a dress style that works for me. It hasn't happened yet but I like the way they use surplus fabric from other brands.
@MyGreenCloset
9 жыл бұрын
sonyafby I've been following them for a bit and I guess I have mixed thoughts: I think it's a great concept and I love that everything is done under one roof, but I'm not a fan of synthetic materials and it seems like the majority of their stuff is viscose/rayon which I particularly don't like since it often has quality/care issues. I totally agree, I've looked through their dresses a few times and never found anything that I really liked. A lot of their styles, especially the more formal ones, look great on the models but don't actually seem very wearable for most people even though they say they do fittings on different body types... I dunno, just my opinion. What have you found missing with their dress styles?

I really want to start working toward a more green and ethical lifestyle. I live in a small area though, with not really any choices besides fast fashion. I also am more on the plus size of clothing so its kind of hard for me to find things I'm really comfortable in already. Do you have any tips for that?

Another fab video. Thank you. So going back to a recent question I asked, I'm not really sure what is the better option : buying (anything) second hand or buying organic, sustainable and ethical? I get that buying second hand is more eco friendly, but I would think buying (second hand or new) from brands and shops that are ethical, eco and organic would be better as the materials are better and you're supporting better trade (and sometimes local businesses). Thoughts?
@MyGreenCloset
9 жыл бұрын
This is a difficult question because I honestly don't think one or the other is necessarily better. It depends on which you prefer and what works best for you. I personally like to do both. Like you mentioned, secondhand shopping is very eco-friendly but supporting ethical brands helps them grow and encourages a more sustainable and ethical industry which is important. Also while ethical and organic clothes are often good-quality, that's not always the case and you can definitely find very good-quality garments secondhand, it depends more on the particular item/brand than secondhand vs. ethical stores. However if you are concerned about chemicals in clothing then sticking with organic cotton is best. I really like to buy from fair trade and sustainable stores because I want to support what they are doing and I think it's good to have ethical alternatives to fast fashion available to customers. But I also can't afford to shop only from ethical brands, can't always find the styles I want, and really enjoy thrift shopping, so doing both works well for me. :)

well, we eat the meat so don't worry about leather. nothing of the cow is going to waste.
@MyGreenCloset
7 жыл бұрын
That's not necessarily true... With factory farming animals can be treated so poorly that the leather is of very low quality. High quality leather comes from the babies and can be the primary commodity instead of the meat- essentially farming for leather, so it's not a by product. Leather is also primarily chrome tanned which is incredibly toxic and severely polluting villages where they do it and cause pretty terrible health issues with workers. With the environmental cost of animal agriculture, the tanning and production, leather goods are some of the most unsustainable products.
