For several years of my career, I was the expert in a key area of our products. When technology moved on, I had to claw my way into new expertise. Even though I learned new things, the imposter syndrome was strong in me. Luckily I am now retired and can pretend to be a clever ham radio operator, just like the rest of hams!

Impostor syndrome is a blessing and a curse that most people in the engineering field experience from time to time. It's part of being passionate about a subject and wanting to do the best possible work. It can be a tool. There will always be someone smarter than you, but if you feel like you're in over your head and you're the smartest person in the room, it's time to buckle down and get to learning. It's the engineer's equivalent of rock climbing. 🤓

I fully agree. It is a blessing and a curse. It's important to recognize when you are the smartest person in the room vs when you're the most junior. It can be comfortable to be the big fish, but that can lead to stagnation. After an extended period of being the big fish in a little pond, it's likely time to get your ass kicked for a stretch and consider a position or job change so that you can continue to learn and grow. Just my two cents. Take care.

For the person that asked, the US military uses FIPS Codes from the census to tie the zip code to the state and county. MGRS is also used in lieu or Long & Lat.

I absolutely love what you’re doing, Gaston. We need more people like you in the hobby building and creating like this. With that being said, ideally, these Amateur Radio software and programs should have both a basic and an advanced settings/set up options from the get-go. It kind of surprises me that there isn’t a simple toggle switch in the program somewhere to change between a basic and advanced options profile. I mean, the programs are already quite advanced and in depth, so it shouldn’t be too hard to make a more simple and turn key option/interface. But I’m not a programmer or a coder so maybe i’m talking hogwash. 🤷🏻♂️

I agree there should be a toggle in the user interface that allows a switch between basic and advanced. It's been a while, but I believe flmsg supports this UI pattern.

Great stream and I agree with your point about amateur radio being difficult to get started in. I'm fairly technical and I would have been lost without your content. I bought a qdx made a dipole and was able to functions check everything with js8cal today. All I'n prep to be able to use the same qdx over reticulum which is my emcomm goal. Thanks for everything you put out!

Cheers to another technical person that struggled with amateur radio. It does not need to be this complicated. Good luck with the QDX. It's easy to blow the finals on those little guys.

I have an old dos-based program called "Band Aid" we run in Dos Box for HF prediction. I haven't used it though for any long-range communications for a long time. Mostly for NVIS shots which normally work fine.

Generally, if you feel you have imposter syndrome, you have a prity solid skill set and are comparing yourself to others who may appear "better." When hiring someone, I would rather they have real-world experience than a piece of paper coming out of the gate. As you alluded to, being able to remember some line of code months later over not having the ability to troubleshoot a problem or come up with a novel solution is of little value in the real world. The ability to find the answer is a much better skill to have than wrote memorization. Great videos!

@@TheTechPrepperHF radio sales in Australia have some info on them on there web page and they took over the agency from Qmac several years ago. There are radios available if you message on the Australian HF user groups. Stick with later model versions otherwise prog ramming can be a bit of an issue. The going price for a clean radio is around $550au and a complete backpack setup your looking over a $1000au or more.
