$1000 on food and $2200 on rent : “I live pretty frugally”
@Maknopono
3 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly
@kevinschultz6091
3 жыл бұрын
@@Maknopono - I lived in Palo Alto for 2 years, which is a 45 minute drive south of San Francisco, and even more expensive. (SF is an expensive large city, but there are even more expensive smaller communities that surround it.) I was spending $2,300 on a 400 sq.ft. apartment, and $100 a week on groceries....and that was AFTER getting 1/2 of my meals free at work. (I was paying for weekend meals and dinner, basically.) And that was basic Safeway shopping - vegetables and rice and sausage and milk and almonds and whatnot. (Note that the reason I was paying this was that my company re-located me to there, and paid for me to live close to work, so that I would commute via shuttle and bicycle, rather than drive in. Seriously - parking was THAT BAD. They actually got fined by the city of Palo Alto if they had more than a certian number of cars go in and out of their campus on a daily basis. With that, my cycle commute was 30 minutes, and 10 minutes when I drove.) Of course, the neighborhood was almost stupidly nice - in a "Yes, that's a 4 million dollar re-model. Oh, hey: nice 6-bedroom 1900's farmhouse. What, only a 2 million mid-century duplex? Dude, you're slumming it." While he could probably cut down on eating out, yes: what he's describing is living relatively frugally in San Francisco. An only real larger option would be to go for a larger house, but split with a roommate. That could probably cut his rent by $500/month, maybe. (SF housing prices have been tanking in recent months, but a 2-bed condo is looking to be $2,800 or so.) I'd also argue that his decision to go with a shorter lease is hanging him up - at least with my rental agency, the cost of lease breaking was 1 month of rent; as such, if he's going to be living there for more than a few months, it makes more sense to go for the longer lease, and save the difference to pay for the break. (However, perhaps his lease agreement is different. Or if his "a couple of hundred" is per-year, rather than per-month.)

For what you're paying per month for your apartment (including peace of mind and excellent location), you could easily lower that by $1,000 here. Anyway, just wanted to throw that out there! Loved the video. I'm basically in the same boat, lol. It's funny how many dudes seem to think ~$100K+ means lambos and fine women, when all it really ends up being is lambdas and Stack Overflow decisions, lol.
