Here's how I teach math. Start by activating prior knowledge. Ask questions to bridge students' informal and formal understanding to what we are learning about. Always make connections to students' lives and include opportunities to apply, construct, and connect the big ideas to an actual model or representation.
In this video, I am using hot wheel tracks and having students make a ramp to connect their informal knowledge to the math concept slope. We introduce academic language such as "rise" and "run" with a visual model. In later lessons, I introduce the slope formula and y-intercept but here I am just introducing the big idea and kids get to construct their own ramp.
