A lot of great detailed information. sometimes I think the urge to master these technical challenges is a parallel drive to the artistic need for self-expression. the different interests can easily be at odds and require a lot effort to achieve a semblance of balance. so I appreciate all you've done here and thanks for sharing your knowledge

Couldn’t agree more! Dialing in these specific sounds is important to the music I play and I’d argue that being able to recall a large number of sounds quickly and easily in the moment is almost as important as technical facility on the instrument.

I have a Terraform as well as an HX stomp. Was trying to wrap my head around how best to route everything. It seems like we share the same ideas about getting the most out of our pedalboards. This is by far the most logical, powerful, and flexible way I’ve seen signal path done with these two pedals. Incredible!! Thanks for posting!

Thanks for walking us through that! All those multi-effects are overwhelming to me right now (I'm just now learning my Hx Stomp), but I understand that over years of using those items, it becomessecond nature to you, building knowledge brick by brick. Someday I'll get there but I'm the mean time it gives me perspective and understanding to see how you do it. Also, it's very helpful to know what works on stage from your experience because I've only ever played analog on stage, never digital YET. Thank you!

I while I enjoy playing through a big board full of strymon and source audio pedals, I also want to get my sounds at gigs that I have to take a flight or a subway to,so I am pretty sure that a stomp xl plus expression pedal will do that for me. I’ve been auditioning one for about a week and while I would like a bit more dsp, I am impressed with how well designed the UI is. The helix fx sounds are not quite as juicy or customizable as my “ real” pedal board, but the tiny package and ease of having many effects go on and off at the same time is golden.

I also have the Stomp XL, and that's what I typically end up taking out for gigs that I don't need a ton of effects. This large board mostly gets used with my fusion band, my ambient duo, and at home when I'm recording. The Helix effects are awesome, but one fault of going the full digital modeler route is that it takes longer to build sounds and menu dive and really dial in a preset.

Alex I have used my HX Stomp in the same fashion as you for about 8 years and it was a great tool for my amp sim and some effects. However 2 things forced me to see if I could use the HX by itself. One is I needed a fly-rig and more importantly a back injury won't let me lug a heavy pedal board around anymore. I looked at the POD Go but I didn't like the reduced capabilities. However reprogramming the HX and adding TRS switch has worked out really well. I will miss some of my pedals.

That is quite the intensive pedalboard. In that kind of setup, what do you control with the HX Stomp FS 4/5 buttons? "Generally," what are you running through its Send/Return? I appreciate the tip about some issues when running an Expression Pedal with TS connection into the Stomp. Thanks

Very nice set up. I did send my Wampler terraform back and the Julia . i got a boss CE2w and I like it a lot better and it sounds awesome. Much easier to use and much lusher than the terraform. I also am taking my pod go to my other project and like it alot. I’m much more comfortable with it and great chorus sounds. You would like a pod go and I’m sure I would like the stomp. I may get a hx stomp xl at some point.

Thanks Thomas - I saw your email the other day. The one thing the Terraform really doesn’t do is an analog-voiced chorus sound, which might explain why you like the Julia and I felt the need to have my Warped Vinyl on this board. I actually am planning on ordering a PodGo soon. I get 2 or 3 emails a month asking if I have PodGo presets available and I know it’s very popular with violinists.

Know this is an older video, but do you happen to have the midi values for the subdivisions on the echosystem in cheat sheet form? I like your workflow of selecting delay type then subdivision
@AlexPriceMusician
Жыл бұрын
Hey Josh - the MIDI values are just roughly 128 divided by 9. So 1-14 would be the first option, 15-28 the second, etc. Fully counter clockwise would be 1, clockwise would be 128. There are 9 values so roughly every 14 values should get you the next subdivision.

Hey Alex, a question about your outputs - what made you decide to run your rig in stereo vs wet/dry or wet/dry/wet? I'm currently weighing the pros and cons of those options for my own rig.
@michaelmarsmusic

Curious what do your 2 daisy chained power outputs to the hx amount to? I heard the minimum to power the hx is like 9v 900ma. Sadly my power supply only admits multiple 9v 300ma. So would 600ma work to power the hx?

Hello. I am a young man who plays guitar in South Korea. If you don't have enough skills to speak my English, please understand your understanding. I bought EcoSystem and Morning Star MC8 this time. But I don't know how to connect ecosystems to Morning Star. I wonder what cable you bought and connected. What kind of product did you buy? If possible, please also link the product. Please answer. I have no place to ask this. Thank you.

Hey man - any 1/4” TRS cable will work. Just look up “TRS cable” and find one that is the right length. Here’s an example: amzn.to/3rUrV7V

Good stuff. Whats the Echosystem CC message to set the delay specifically to 1/4, dotted eighth etc?
@AlexPriceMusician
3 жыл бұрын
That’d be a CC message of 101 for delay engine A and 110 for delay engine B. CC value of 0 simulates the knob being completely counter clockwise and 127 is clockwise. You’d need to kind of guess how to set it in between. I actually set up different presets for different subdivisions though. Then when I switch between them, they spillover and fade out as opposed to hearing the time value change and the pitch funkiness that comes with it

Do you run into level tone issues using the hx stomp with analog pedals? I'm using a stomp to handle most of my modulation stuff but as soon as I add it in the mix it feels like the volume along with the sound quality drops. Any ideas?
@AlexPriceMusician
Жыл бұрын
It is a digital pedal, so your signal is passing through an analog to digital conversion and coming back digital to analog. If you're new to modeling, you might notice that. I know I did at first, but you learn to work around it. Try analog bypassing the Stomp and see if that restores what you think is missing. Also, every block in the Helix has a volume control so you could always boost there to reach unity.

Nice board setup. Compact for how many pedals are on there. Couple questions - do you screw shut your hinged riser during transport or just leave it loose? I'd never considered leaving one of those loose for accessibility to the gear underneath. Second question is regarding the USB ports. Did you at some point consider putting a USB hub on the board so you only have one cable to plug into the computer? I'm on the fence there with my current setup - not sure if there is a chance for ground loops when multiple pedals are wired to a USB hub, even if it is not a powered hub. Still need to experiment with it.
@modemlaugh

Ah ha! Never mind on the pedal riser question. I just saw that part in your other video that shows it pop open and shut. That's a nice design.
@AlexPriceMusician
3 жыл бұрын
Never thought to make a single USB hub! That might have ended up taking up more space than a simple pass through though and you can see it’s very tight near the patch bay. About the ground loop thing - I’ve noticed consistently that I need the ground lift on my direct box whenever I’m plugged into my computer. I’d love to know the reason. Both my pedalboard and all of my computer equipment (and anything digital) is on the same outlet in my studio.

@@AlexPriceMusician that's a tough one. Probably need process of elimination to troubleshoot. Start with nothing plugged into the computer then plug in components one by one until you notice the hum or however the issue manifests. Maybe an Ethernet cable or something that's plugged to a separate component?

It's a skin from www.gearbyceba.com/ I really like the overdrive and amp simulation in the Helix. External overdrives mixed with those same digital amp settings just don't sound good to my ear though.

Is it "smart" to always have connected so many pedals? I would think that you lose signal quality for every additional cable connection. I'm curious about your opinion on that. Perhaps it's an idea to add hardware bypass switches for simple presets that do not use the hardware pedals. I don't know if you could really here a difference but perhaps more for the feeling :P
@AlexPriceMusician
3 жыл бұрын
The way I see it, it's a digital rig anyway. That tube amp feeling is long gone haha. I'm sure I'm losing a bit of high end through the unbalanced cable capacitance but many of these pedals have built in buffers. I'm not sure I would notice much of a difference by adding something like the Morningstar ML5

You might be right, but did Hendrix have the immense fear of a cable going bad that would render the entire rig useless during a gig? I bet not.
