I get what you're going for. But taking out all of the Unsullied and killing Brienne, having Pod not be who he really is. That's looking for waaaaay too many twist. The Unsullied are needed. Brienne dying can happen, just not by Pod. It's like, too much. The betrayal of Tarly works.
@lezard2102
7 жыл бұрын
It was all going well until the "BOOM PLOT TWIST! Pod kills Brienne!" 1) The one defining trait of Pod consistent throughout all seasons is his loyalty. 2) Even if it were to be set as a sneak attack, Podrick had been consistently depicted as not a skilled warrior 3) Good plot twists are setup in a way that on a second reviewing you can spot clues that lead into them. Lady Nim suddenly changing sides can work because the Sand Snakes have been previously depicted as treacherous. Pod suddenly working for Littlefinger for no reason is an asspull cheap twist worthy of the hacks that run the show. 4) Pod has already previously recognised the Hound in the past so there is no reason why he wouldn't immediately recognise him with the Brotherhood without Banners causing Jon to immediately distrust their claims and believe they are assassins sent by Cersei. 5) Plus the biggest elephant in the room, Pod suddenly getting a lot of screentime and becoming LF level tactician (pre season 5). Even if he is working for LF doesn't mean he suddenly learns how to effectively manipulate people unless on your part 2 you plan on going the "Pod was LF's sleeper agent all along" route in which case refer to point 3.

lezard2102 Meh. I mean, I like Pod too, but he could just be a good actor in-universe, and Preston is correct that Littlefinger's status as a cunning, formidible villian is more important to the story as a whole than Pod's status as a fan-favorite loyal lad/sex machine. That's like, the essence of D&D's misplaced priorities as writers.

I would argue even Lady Nim changing sides doesn't work. The sand snakes primary motivation for turning on Doran was to go to war and avenge Obryn. They put immediate family on such a high pedistal that they were willing to commit treason for revenge. It also means Nim's previous actions make no sense. Why does she go along with the original plot if she doesn't care about her sisters. Did she just want power. How would that grant her more power then selling out her co-conspirators. The only reason people aren't objecting to her plotline is people have forgotten her completely. And if the only reason a plot twist works is because people don't care enough or know enough about the characters involved in said twist, it usually means that you don't have a good story/twist.

The podrick twist would be hideous. It's a cheap and lazy excuse to get rid of brienne and has no real purpose, logic or foreshadowing behind it. Brienne needs an ending and proper resolution - you can't just make a main character disappear. I also don't get why the tyrell and Martell Bannermen would turn on Dany. Also a sand snake siding with Cersei would be the most distorted character motivation we've ever seen on Game of Thrones.

Pod is a nothing character who has no real significance beyond being someone braine likes to talk to and nothing more. Having him KILL her would be something you expect from a bad comic book. However the rest of his ideas are pretty decent
@SynsityGW
6 жыл бұрын
Game of Thrones and ASOIAF were literally built on the foundation of "the story where sometimes main characters disappear before completion of their arc". To act like you can't kill off Brienne yet because she has yet to finish her arc is ridiculous, and it's why the show sucks now. They continue to kill off characters whose arcs are finished for shock value but it has no impact because it doesn't give you that feeling of unresolved story. The death of Ned/Robb/Catelyn were impactful for that very reason, there was so much left for them to do. Saying Brienne needs "a proper ending and resolution" is true, but this isn't the story where you get it. That's kinda the point... Steven, the foreshadowing before a main character death is nice, but it is not what defines the story nor is it what makes the deaths impactful, the fact that characters die mid-arc is. Not that I love the Pod randomly killing her idea, but the reasons for being against it have nothing to do with the fact that she needs a proper resolution.
@Slechy_Lesh

Pod is kinda randomly assigned to Tyrion isn't he? And then manages to attach himself to Brienne by sheer puppylike stubbornness. He's so innocently likeable and nice, and he kinda popped out from nowhere. And we haven't actually seen a Littlefinger spy. That's enough foreshadowing for Pod to be Team Baelish

Pod shouldn't kill Brienne in 'cold blood'. Even if he's been working for littlefinger this whole time that doesn't mean that he is a sociopath just like Baelish. And then a short scene where is disgusted with himself for what he has done.

That would be more in line with Pod. He is a squire. Its a very familial role as much as it is an apprenticeship. He is no cold-blooded killer of those he's devoted to. If anything, killing Brienne could lead to him later slaying Baelish himself.

It would make sense in the context of the show. The only reason Bronn would still be hanging out Jaime is if he is actually finally a part of the cause rather than just in it for the wealth. Ser Bron doesn't give a monkey's about Cersei winning the war, he has no motivation to put himself in peril to kill Dany and cement Cersei's hold on the Iron Throne. Nice effort, but there were too many characters acting out of character. Why would Jon send armies south when he knows the true enemy is beyond the Wall? Why would Pod kill Brienne? Why would Nym betray her family? Why would Jorah know about monsters? Why would the dothraki lose in an open field (and win a siege)? Why would Bronn risk his life to charge Drogon? Maybe it’s easier to nitpick than to write a compelling story, as I’ve just demonstrated.

It was actually the most bs point he thought up. Preston is a big fan of everyone being and agent of everyone else so it was no big surprise he’d want Pod to be a Littlefinger agent. This is despite him doing pretty much absolutely nothing for the past 5 seasons. Also that death scene would pretty much be a combination of Arya’s “surprise you gettin stabbed” scene back in Braavos and bartistan Selmy’s “Lets kill a major character just for the momentary emotions”. To each their own I guess.
@samy29987
7 жыл бұрын
Ser Devil Exactly. Podrick has never been depicted as some strange, sneaky character. He was always portrayed as someone who is loyal and honorable. *Why would he then suddenly become Littlefinger's secret assasin?* Makes no sense. Everything else was miles and miles better from what D&D worked on.
@martijnstuart95
7 жыл бұрын
samy29987 Actually, there is a very big hint that Pod is a Littlefinger spy. Remember that vitally important scene where Pod has sex with several prostitutes and returns without paying them? We are let to believe that Pod is some sort of sex god, but who owned the brothel? Littlefinger. In reality Littlefinger and Pod spend all night planning their elaborate ruse and they forgot all about the prostitutes, so when Pod returned with the money he had to make up a cover story. And Pod the Sex God was born.
@Kunumbah1
7 жыл бұрын
crapvile It seems every think I said has gone way over your head. What you are stating is simply wishful thinking. Just because Pod hasn’t done anything doesn’t mean he has some “secret motive”. He is portrayed as a weak fighter because he is a weak fighter. Yes it would add conflict and intrigue but it grossly differs from Preston’s other points made in the video which relied on logic and plot progression in exchange for some good ol shock value.

First time I've seen someone point out that Dany's father brutally murdered the grandfather and uncle of no less than four other living main characters. Like no, that's not Dany's fault, but it's a great clapback if she tries to invoke the past of any other Westerosi house. Dany to Tyrion: "Your brother murdered my father." Tyrion to Dany: Your father murdered Jon's grandfather AND uncle." Jon to both: "PSA: The Nightking don't care and neither do I right now."
@malekiththeeternityking5433

This is how I would do it. Jon never goes south and only mobilises the northern Armies. Little Finger plots discord in Danys army. Cersei tries to have her rivals murdered Tywin style. Jaime leaves because she blew up the sept IE episode 1. Sansa is sent to the Eyrie so Jon can actually have a reason for the Alliance. Bran acts like Bran Dorne isn't just the sand snakes. Like being in some Yronwoods and Daynes maybe. The Tyrell army isn't defeated by a gost of 10000 cause we know the Reach can supply roughly 40000 troops.

How would Ilyn Payne be a castellan when he can't read, write, or speak?
@sixeyesheavens7
6 жыл бұрын
He makes a perfect castellan because despite what he may think, he really can't say anything different to Cersei which is why in the books he is the perfect sword practice Jaime has because he can't taunt Jaime or demean him for having no more hands. He may be illiterate but his main job as castellan is to protect the castle and being Tywin Lannister's former captain of the guards, he does have experience in that. If we get say ser Daven Lannister with him who in the books is the Warden of the West, then we have someone who could give commands and write while ser Illyn can focus on the important job and that is to contain violence and protect Casterly Rock.

Actually his lack of ability to speak was why Jaime chose him, but the reasoning was more so that he couldn't tell anyone that Jaime was no longer a capable fighter. @sixeyesheavens7

@@SynsityGWBut you can't deny that Ser Ilyn was more than just a choice. The man was his father's head guardsman in Casterly Rock. Tywin would never grant him the position had he not been dependable and able to do the tasks like a real fighter. Perhaps another reason Jaime choose Ilyn.

Maybe keep Edmure's kid alive or Roslin because she's a Frey; also how would the guards know so quick that the castle was being "attacked" per se, rather than just an assassination
@jordanf9257

I don't think it being an attack or an assassination would really matter. Either way they would have to assume that the goal is to rescue the prisoners and therefore by killing the prisoners they do not give whoever is there what they want.

Jordan F I hear your point but just think of the method of how such news is spread throughout a Medieval Castle (especially Casterly Rock, which is built within a mountain and has its cells deep within the recesses of the mines) either through bells or by word of mouth (it'd have to be word of mouth due to the fact that bell sounds don't carry well through solid rock). That means Arya would have to go slower than the guards after they find out that Payne is dead and someone remembers that they need to kill the Tullys and goes all the way down to the cells, get the keys from the gaoler, and kill them; all of this before arya gets there. Idk maybe I'm just a Tully fanboy who wants to see Edmure have some semblance of a character arch in a story where he and Rosylin have constantly been at a disadvantage, it just seems a bit hacked in there in order to give Sansa Riverrun

Awesome, but only bit I don't really understand is why Dorne would betray Dany. If the bad pussy snakes + psycho mum murdered Doran & son because they seemingly did nothing to avenge the Lannister crimes (we have to roll with that plot now), why would they effectively side with the Lannisters by betraying the only person challenging Lannister rule?

mrgor24 I think the idea here is that it isn't Dorne per se. It's Lady Nym, perhaps she's disgusted with Dany for taking on Tyrion, maybe she just wants power. Maybe she hates dragons. But personal reasons would make more sense then a country's reasons.

Pod working for Littlefinger would be a good explanation for what Podrick did to those whores, he grew up in one of LF's brothel's, his father died in the Greyjoy Rebellion and his mother left him to Littlefinger at the age of four. LF tutors him until at the age of twelve he plops him into a brothel outsides of some lord's Castle. This lord often visits this establishment and eventually takes Pod on as a squire/fuck buddy. He sends LF info on this Lord, Lord dies in the war, and LF sets up Podrick to spy on Tyrion (become his squire). The rest of his backstory is completely fabricated.

@nabbed13

That's magnificent... But not going far enough, Ser Ilyn is into Pod because Ilyn was down with Pod's daddy, he actually dug up his brother corpse, cut off his balls and drained them into Tysha so he could replicate his brother. Tysha told LF everything and gave her Pod so Ilyn would never find him. Plot inconsistencies be damned, we're retconnington this shit.

I wouldn't have had Pod as Littlefinger's spy. Instead, I would've had Brienne killed towards the end of S6 already. After leaving Riverrun, Brienne & Pod take a rest somewhere near Moat Cailin. Pod goes to the woods to take a piss. Brienne's then being surrounded by Knights of the Vale & they bring her to LF in MC. Pod returns & realizes she's gone. LF lies to Brienne, saying that Sansa gave him the order to seize & execute her bc she failed to convince the Blackfish & how unlikely it is that Jaime just simply lets her go to protect Sansa even though they're enemies & that she's probably working for Jaime & has been sent to kill Sansa & how she's not fit to protect her anyway & says that he on the other hand is. Brienne struggles at first, manages to kill 2 random squires before she gets killed. Podrick later finds Moat Cailin empty, finds the 2 dead bodies of Vale-men & then sees Brienne's dead body, falls in his knees in sorrow. (This would've added a bitter taste for the viewers regarding the Vale-rescue in S6E9) In S7 when Arya's on her way to Winterfell, she rests at MC, curious about those 2 dead Vale-men & then hears a noise somewhere inside. She finds Pod, staring at a dead Brienne...& cut. In the next MC-scene, Pod already told Arya about his adventures with Brienne & Sansa's rescue. He says that the sword Oathkeeper's her's by right & tells her why. Arya decides that she can trust Pod, asks him to become her squire & help her execute LF at Winterfell. (maybe have that badass-fanservice-sparring match there?). As for Winterfell, I would've had Robin being there as well, just to give a more understandable reason why Sansa & Jon have to tolerate LF, since Robin likes him. Bran would not tell Sansa how beautiful she was at the wedding, instead just saying sorry that it had to happen at their home , telling her about his visions & that he can't control them yet & then saying that LF truly didn't know about Ramsey & that he saw him in his vision, talking with Ramsey, mentioning she suffered enough. He says that LF probably counted on Roose & on Ramseys promise & thought they knew in what kind of a position of power LF was, in case Ramsey broke that promise. Bran then shows the dagger & guesses that LF probably just tries in his own strange way to be liked by the Starks. (This is obv. just to trick the viewers. As much as I liked that Bran-LF-dagger-scene, I would've had that off-screen, without that whole "Chaos is a ladder" from Bran. That wasn't really smart of Bran. In fact, we already have Arya witnessing the conversation between LF & Tywin at Harrenhal where we hear about LF's tactic to take advantage of chaos.) Towards the end of S7 when Sansa visits the Crypts again, she hears steps & is scared but it turns out that it's Arya...& then cut. In the next Winterfell scene, some random Stark-guy tells LF that Lady Stark demands his presence in the great hall, meanwhile Sansa approaches Robin in the godswoods & asks him to see the statues of the Kings of Winter in the Crypts with her. When LF enters the great hall, he sees Arya & Bran at the table, instead of Sansa, with Pod standing behind them. Arya starts with accusing him of murdering Brienne. When LF tries to set up a different story behind Brienne's death, Bran interrupts him with repeating the words he said to Brienne before giving the order. Scene changes to Sansa & Robin entering the Crypts. However, Ghost is there walking around, which scares Robin & he runs off, leaving the Crypts. Arya continues with accusing LF of other murders & treasons & Bran says he's the one who sent the cutthroat to ensure the rivalry between Starks & Lannisters. Arya ends with how she knew since she saw him at Harrenhal that he likes to take advantages of chaos, sentences him to die, takes Oathkeeper from Pod & beheads LF. However, Robin just walked in when that happened. He starts crying, gets angry calls back his Knights & walks off to the Vale with his army, abandoning the Starks. (That way, killing LF would have consequences. Also this way, Arya wouldn't have returned to Winterfell until the end of season instead of having stupid interactions with Sansa :P) I like how Jon's narrative approaches, just like you said, merit over inheritance, which is why I think Jon should've found out about his parentage within the same season in order to shake his personality in the season finale.

Stannis' men now following Melisandre? Why would they follow her after the burning of Shireen? They witnessed that horrific act and it didn't even lead to victory. That doesn't sound like how people act. Podrick killing Brienne because he's loyal to Little Finger? If that would have happened in the actual show you would have been freaking out about it. You would have made a breakdown episode where all your little characters started killing each other and claiming secret loyalty to other characters that they have never had a single connection to in the story. That's not a twist that's a contrived surprise masquerading as a twist. See how easy it is to pick apart other people's work? Someone actually trying to grapple with his powers rather than it being all that defines him now), and really got my attention with Pod being a secret Littlefinger spy (I'm guessing). Amazing, and pretty gut wrenching. The risk would have been it being too much of a leap in logic, maybe, but meh, still golden. Seriously, Preston, why couldn't have hired you as an ideas guy for this season? All they needed was someone to do some damage control on those scripts and say, "That's stupid - how about this?" I am more excited about finding out where *your* version of the show is going than I was for the actual show. Oh, BTW... Honestly Pod throwing in with Littlefinger makes about as much sense as the entire Dorne arc. Why would Pod, a squire with nothing to gain from such an alliance who's already been portrayed as a wholly honorable guy throughout cast his lot with a man his former lord Tyrion would doubtless have warned him about, going so far as to kill his own tutor, a woman he'd shown nothing but respect and admiration for? Jakob Karstein still doesn't fit...a lot of the actions don't really fit the characters if you look closely. It's just "boom plot twist" cheap writing, falling into a lot of the same pitfall of not sticking to realistic actions and consequences that hurt S7 in the first place

Jakob Karstein Occam's razor, it just doesn't fit. There's zero foreshadowing, even slightly, to suggest any ulterior motive or allegiance on Pods part. It's just sloppy writing on Preston's part in order to make his overarching narrative work.

DynamicWorlds exactly. This is just like S7 but it's Preston's fanfiction.

Can you just release "Preston's Season 8" before D&D start production so that they can just steal your ideas and maybe make something good for once? This stuff is great writing. I will not be surprised if this goes viral, or if you hear from some serious writers.

Why couldn't this have actually happened? It is a much more compelling and sensible story.

MizzReyRey The masses seemed to like the "boring" first to third seasons well enough. As to why people are gassing him, I'd wager it's because these story suggestions are more in-line with the earlier seasons (and therefore the books) in terms of consistent characterisation, internal logic, consequences and themes.
