Try to speak the language, even if you know German from squad. When a German sees that you are trying, they immediately will try to help you with your German. Use the line " Mein Deutsch nicht so gut " will work wonders. As long as people see that you are trying, they'll accept you. Also the best way to learn the right grammar, demand that your hubby and kids instantly correct you. I.E. you say der, but it's die, he should instantly say "die" no explanation . Just have him say the correct word, nothing else. It seems rude, but it's not.

Jenna, let me tell you a secrete. Even we as native Germans are constantly making grammatical mistake when talking. So welcome to the club... 😉

Yeah, the excuses. I'm German and I remember when the borders opened, I visited the Czech Republic (actually being Czechoslovakia back then), and I wanted to learn their language. So I booked a course at a German Volkshochschule, paid my fees, and attended the lessons four or five times. About two years later (I had become a regular visitor by then), I bought me a book "Czech for beginners" that came with an audio CD, and I worked myself through for or five chapters, then put it aside. I always had more important things to do that couldn't wait for an hour or until the next day. Now, many years later, when I visit them, most young people speak English, or German, or both, and I've become too old to learn another language. -- Lame excuses all the time, and somewhere inside me I know it. But I can't admit to myself that I just was too lazy all the time, and still am. (edit: typo and missed word)

Word Order Tip: Speak like Yoda of Star Wars fame: "I am with my mother and father to the store going." Remember: With German, you (most of the time) never know what happened...until you get to the end of the sentence. LOL! Love the challenge...love the language.

Did you try to say the German version of your example? It might be a surprise.

So here's what I get from Google Translate (remember, I'm a beginning German learner) when I write my previously posted English sentence: " Ich gehe mit meiner Mutter und meinem Vater in den Laden." I think my initial English interpretive post was pretty accurate...nein? I'm studying to learn three other languages, and German is my favorite...and the most challenging.
