My OH is a She Makes War fan, I've followed and valued your Twitter presence for a while. I'm ashamed to say that it took me until this time last week to actually hear Obey Robots. Had a drive from Scotland to Bucks, heard the album three times in a row. Refreshing, exhilarating and above all inspiring! So sorry for coming late to the party. A copy of the white LP has been ordered, can't wait for the postie to bring it. This video alone is INCREDIBLE. So relatable and so very inspiring. Thank you! Penfriend does indeed Rock! 🙏🚀

Oh this is lovely to read, thank you Thomas! I have tried to communicate as best I can that this is a very ME thing, without at all dismissing the fact that it's a creative collaboration - neither of us is just playing along on the others' work, so to speak - but you're incredibly welcome to have come aboard now :) The party is always open! Love to both of you xo

Love this video, it's great to see the process. Very inspiring actually! Regarding the "lacking music theory" stuff, I personally think it's great to learn more about it, but it's not really foundational to making music at all in my opinion. I think it's nice to be able to analyse music and understand how and why things work, but when actually writing songs and coming up with parts, to me it's more of an instinctual sort of thing where you just try stuff until you land on something that feels right. Now it might very well be that knowing more theory might expand your mind on what sort of things you could try out, and that's great. But I don't think it's a matter of sitting down, applying some theory and hey presto there's your part.

That's really interesting Martijn, thank you! I think repetition and experience is most important, giving yourself permission to try and things and be silly and get it wrong. I've obviously soaked in loads of structure stuff just from listening to songs all my life and from playing in so many bands - I always learned something different from each artist I played with. I couldn't tell you in theory terms what those things are, but I use them all the time. Whenever I've tried to learn music theory stuff it's honestly in one ear and out the other, so I'll just keep making albums I reckon :)

This was fascinating. I’m still very much in the early stages of learning bass, so seeing you make up a bass line from nothing blows my mind. Also, I don’t like marmite but my wife of over 20 years does so I think you’re definitely right about that being a good thing for a successful relationship 😊

Thank you, and yay bass! There are probably better methods for learning how to find the root notes of a chord but I do like my way, I've tried to learn about keys and things before but the information just doesn't stick in my noggin. It's normally just the lowest note you can hear and then see if there's a fun and tasteful melody you can add in. Also leaving gaps is big on bass, you can just chug along and sometimes that's really good, but sticking to the kick or snare drum and leaving little gaps can be really effective and it's a simple thing to try. I can't abide it when bass players wang on as of they're a frustrated lead guitarist!

Totally with you on the bass, Laura! I love it, and I don't play it enough! And it can be repetitive, but holds a song together and can sometimes be right in your face. Mark King totally got me into playing bass! Really fascinating to see how you put everything together!

Yes! Bass is the one thing that if you took it out of a song it was in, you'd notice. (Bands without bass can be ace too, of course, but that's just another thing.) How about joining me in a "play more bass in 2022" pact?

Loved seeing this. Everything from the sneak peek at your Sansamp settings, that music theory isn't everything, that trick for writing guide bass lines, and the importance of crumpets (I hope Vegemite is also acceptable). I learned more in these 20 minutes than I did from watching 8 hours of The Beatles: Get Back.
