Hotter take: it shouldn’t have been Finn & Poe at Canto Bite. It should have been Finn and Chewbacca. 1) Finn and Chewy have a really fun and promising dynamic in The Force Awakens that made me want to see them go on more adventures together. Finn’s kinda jumpy and neurotic and Chewy likes to fuck with him. It’s great. 2) One of the biggest (legit) complaints about Rose is that she delivers too much of Finn’s character development to him through monologue. Chewy doesn’t talk, leaving Finn to learn things on his own while still having help for his mission. 3) As it stands, Chewy has fuck all to do in this movie but roast a porg. Can’t blame Johnson for that blunder either, it was Abrams who sent Chewy off with Rey at the end of the previous film, completely ignoring the potential Finn had to replace Han as his roguing-buddy. It woulda saved the whole movie.

Even then the force is recognized as its own separate: midichlorians are simply a product of the force in one’s dna. Basically it’s the biological evidence of a soul and the amount increases with your connection to the force. Say what you will on how clear that was established in the prequels but that’s basically what they are. The Jedi and their abilities never functioned like that of the wizards in Harry Potter. Even if the abilities were hereditary though it’s not worth undoing Luke’s entire arc just to tell it all again with a different character. It’s akin to making a follow up series to Harry Potter that follows the first story beat for beat except replace Harry with a muggle, have Harry himself do something stupid and arguably out of character to resurrect Voldemort once again and then finally kill off Harry Ron and Hermione one by one in the most humiliating ways possible

my biggest criticism of the new trilogy is not letting John Boyega and Oscar Isaac's natural chemistry lead to a romance for them, instead going with Finn and Rey which worked on zero levels and was tossed aside for Rey and Kylo anyway

I wish we got more their chemistry from TFA. Or indeed that we got a star fighter rivalry between between Kylo and Po, because then we could have each of the 3 leads have a personal sort of foil role for Ben Solo, like Rey would be his mirror as a talented force sensitive, Po would be his fighter Ace rival, and Finn, as a defector would be his ideological counter point. They would all have personal reasons to hate him.

I'll stand by my original take leaving the theater, that was a really good movie, that was an awkward semi lore breaking star wars movie, and an absolutely hollow sequel within a trilogy. If this had been a stand alone star wars film it would have been received pretty darn well... Lastly I think almost everyone would have been a fan of Luke's arc if he just didn't die at the end. Lastly, lastly imo making han a dead beat dad and Luke someone who gave up on his friends (especially wo explaining thoroughly) were choices that some portion of fans were never gonna forgive. Imagine 20 years from now a new star wars drops and rey shows up but sucks at everything, like the one trait we know her for is now reversed..

Okay so i agree that the sequel trilogy absolutely needed to subvert the characters and trends of the series however my issue with this film especially is that there is no real attempt to make it happen on screen, im absolutely into the idea of luke being a very different more downtrodden and pessimistic version of the character but we don’t actually see that change outside of a few seconds long flashbacks, i think the right way of achieving the goals this film set out to and in my opinion failed to achieve was to have the first film be similar in tone and characterisation to the original trilogy (not quite to the extent that the force awakens was tho), then use the story of the second film to push the characters into that kind of headspace with darker tones and subverting the trends of the franchise and then using the conclusion to fully explore those themes and characterisation and the consequences behind it, ik its not really a critique of this film but i feel like everything every film in this trilogy tries to do falls completely flat due to it coming completely out of left field vs what happened previously and then not ever being followed up on
@DeanBobolini

Honestly I disagree that the subversion points in this movie added anything to its story. I stand by the people that say Rian Johnson absolutely shot the new Star Wars trilogy, not in the foot, but in the face. The movie was so poorly written and received that the following movie ended up being bad too. Disney could not un-f**k what RJ did… I almost want to call it “over correction” but it’s more like… you completely over cook the thanksgiving turkey to being completely inedible, so to fix the situation you just burn the house down, bring the mashed potatoes outside… and as you are watching the whole thing burn… you notice that forgot the gravy. Also honestly the force awakens was luke warm at best. Acting was great if the characters were just written better everything would be fine but it’s all just bad. I know it’s kinda lame to just blame Kathleen Kennedy for it all… but screw it. She and Rian Johnson absolutely sunk the franchise. It’s at the lowest point it’s ever been.

Really I think much like Ghostbusters 2016 people glued there politics to this movie and claimed it was politically driven but really if you came at this movie like me turning off the Trump BS it's basically a Confusing remake of Empire Strikes Back without any of the charm or humour also Making Poe and Finn Straight was kinda the dumbest part as I'm like having openly gay leads should be in Sci Fi movies being this Galaxy has nothing to do with the Abrahamic nonsense that has made a massive number of people stay in the closet

I do agree with a decent amount of your points, and I may be seeing Star wars through Rose tinted goggles as a fan since a young age, but for me at least, part of the upset around TLJ was the, for lack of a better term, assassination of the original cast of characters, the supposed subverting the audiences expectations and other messages that could be conveyed from the film. While subverting expectations can be a worthwhile plot element, it felt like Ryan was just adding shock horror for the hell of it in certain places, which confused me even further when I watched knives out. Its clear he has the ability to write a good film, but TLJ just seems so much more lazy with its messaging, its themes and characters. Finn got absolutely shafted narratively. I don’t lookm upon the film as abhorrently as I did between 2018-2019 (because ROS made sure my hopes for star wars were totally crushed) but whether through nostalgia or a bad experience I don’t have the intent to watch the sequels again

The Last Jedi is more of a JJ Abrams Film than a Rian Jonson JJs aim was to make a Star Wars movie that HE wanted to make(not one that fits in with George’s story(that of which he trashed)). The game plan following was to basically keep a low profile; if the trilogy was a success it’s all thanks to him and if it fails it’s not his fault. That said TLJ being the middle installment HAD to adhere to JJs favorite if not only tool for storytelling(although that’s being generous): Mystery Box! This is why the movie is seemingly uneventful: we learn nothing about the true status quo of the galaxy, we learn nothing about Snoke or the First Order or the Republic or really anything. We get a Rashamon Reference which doubles as what little we know about Luke and Ben which is honestly every bit as bad as people say it but I digress. The point reason why it feels like filler is because it is filler Nothing ties in well with the other films, Luke is treated like a blank slate which is why the movie feels the need to push a “don’t meet your heroes message”, Snoke is “potentially” a red herring because people seem to think an emperor Palpatine figure is a given in this universe and rather than learning the reason for the war we end up literally detouring to a whole separate universe with a separate economy to teach the audience how war works in real life. Of course the movie also just expects us to soften up to the resistance because “good guys”, screwing up its own message. Rey’s lineage mind you is also a mystery box: they say she’s no one but we don’t learn her surname nor do we see her parents in the vision in the cave. Basically the movie is meant to stall, meant buy time until the real plot of said trilogy is revealed in the final installment. What it is no one including JJ knows, it’s all up in the air. Unfortunately for JJ Colin Trevorrow was fired and then HE had to take the reigns I’m not doing the scenario justice Watch Star Wars Apocrypha part 1 & 2

I find that the Burn the Jedi texts message is even more interesting when you later see Rey close a drawer full of old books than look identical to the ones Luke was using. The plot was less a nihilistic Kill The Past message and more of a Don't Fetishize The Past. Both Kylo and Luke allow themselves to be defined by their mistakes relating to orthodoxy, either by embracing it rigidly or rejecting it outright. The way forward is to carry that knowledge forward, but to not define oneself by it. Embrace the future and don't use past models as straightjackets.

14:18 Rey did not want Luke to train her, at least it wasn’t her main goal. She gave Luke the saber because she went there to bring him to the Resistance and the fight and be the hero the Galaxy needs. She definitely also wanted help with this new power she has, the Force and the mystery surrounding it and this also intertwines with Rey’s arc of her sense of self worth and identity. Rey went to collect Luke because she never thought she was good enough to be the hero.

@darenborkus5590

It seems to me that modern screenwriters for the most part do not understand what deconstruction is and it is because of this that works like the Star Wars sequels fail, the same applies to the prequels. Trying to add something new to an old work or genre as a whole, they forget about the rules set by the work or genre. Deconstruction in the Star Wars films is like: "You thought thing A was A but it's actually B" "You thought Luke was a legendary hero, but he's actually a coward" "You thought the Republic was a Utopian Society, actually this is a corrupt state of bureaucrats" "You thought that the Doctor was a Galifrean, but in fact the doctor is...” But wait, it took me somewhere in the wrong place... Bad Deconstruction operates on the principle of a retcon... bad one, it breaks something, but it doesn’t reconstruct it. Since the connection to the original is purely nominal and could have been told in another franchise or another genre, in which case what's the point? It seems to me that a good Deconstruction should change the perspective of a franchise or genre, like: "Thing A is Thing A, but..." "Heroes are heroes, but what if their good intentions don't always lead to good results?" "The Republic is a utopia, but what if not all its members agree with the utopian principles? "The Jedi are the Jedi, but what if their ultimate righteousness limits their views on the overall conflict?" "The Siths are Siths, but what if their predatory views allow them to achieve more?" If you want to see a successful example of deconstruction in the Star Wars franchise, play Knights of the Old Republic 2, it successfully rethought some of the details of the franchise without breaking the basic foundations.

I opted to watch this whole video beginning to end and I can say as a Star Wars Channel, this guy doesn't know all that much about Star Wars. Going off of the films or shows themselves is not a good idea. When I assess Star Wars, I always try to make sure that what I'm saying is accurate. It's a deeper reason I don't like the Sequel Trilogy: They disrespected George's 6-part story. The Sequel Trilogy has no reason to exist in GEORGE'S SAGA, no matter how much pretentious themes it props up. They didn't justify themselves as Episodes in a 6-part saga, especially when they break a lot of rules in both the Prequel and the Original Trilogy. When you said that "anyone can be a Jedi and you don't have to be a Skywalker", I feel you were missing the point. The Saga is about Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader and connected characters. No shit it's going to heavily focus on the Skywalker Family. Also dead wrong. I'm sick of people treating the Force like it's magic that anyone can use if they just BELIEVE in it. George has confirmed since the very start that you need both a naturally high enough connection and training to harness the power of the force. I plan to make my own video at some point about why The Last Jedi FAILED as a deconstructive assessment of Star Wars and why the video game Knights of the Old Republic II was much better trying to be that.

There are stories about the grey side of the force, about new ways to explore everything, and I like that. I'm tired of having "the same thing" everytime. Mate, I'm sorry. The movie was awful. Not gonna talk about specifics like the massive nerd I am, but it's the just the whole thing has cracks everywhere. It just doesn't work at all. Instead of the new take, this new vision for the franchise the movie intented to be, it becames a cheap fan fiction gone wrong. Great ideas, but very poorly written and even worse executed. I mean, I know Rey, Finn, Poe, Kylo... There all great actors interpreting well concived characters. I've seen them in other places. Hell, Mark Hamill is a great actor (The fall of house of Usher, case and point), but all of them fail spectacularly in everything, from dialogue to... Well, act in front of a camera. It's like a false vase broken and glued together. Seems nice from afar, but when you actually look at it or worse, you touch it, it falls apart. Not gonna say it ruined the franchise though. That's idiotic, it's just a bad movie. Or a bad trilogy. That's it. But it makes it harder for those seeking to bring new, fresh things to the saga, which is somewhat of a shame.

Honestly there’s no merit to Rey being a nobody: getting excited about the main character of the final installment of the Skywalker NOT being a Skywalker or having any relationship to them is like getting mad at a Superman movie for focusing on Superman I’m not saying Rey can’t be a nobody but 1) it was fair to expect her background and/or lineage to be significant because it was essentially teased in TFA. 2) it’s the Skywalker saga, a narrative with a beginning middle and end focusing on a specific lineage. It’s Luke’s story just as much as it is Rey’s(hell it should be more Luke’s story) but so far we just watched everything he and his friends fought for rendered obsolete before each of them are killed off and with nothing to salavage. All so Rey can be confirmed the real hero: it’s as though Disney just wanted to get the original characters out of the way to shove their own characters in our faces. Honestly if they really wanted Rey to be the Star with no relationship to the Skywalker sagas main players whatsoever they should have just done an anthology project

Rey feels like Anakin from Phantom Menace, leia’s flying scene is just moronic. What I’m getting to is yeah, it’s a fine movie, but the constant little pieces of pure unadulterated shit drag it down. I literally cannot watch it anymore, I get too frustrated with Rose, her character just feels like a “fin has to have a romance arc that isn’t Rey coz now she’s in love with the villain 😱😱” and is so unbelievably forced. But yes Po is genuinely incredibly hot.

So this guy likes to believe he has good taste despite liking one of the most creatively bankrupt and vapid action flicks in recent memorary. Your an actual consoomer my guy and this video has devalued your opinions.

I just discovered your channel and it's so refreshing to encounter someone who, like me, has all the correct opinions - I'm with you on this and Season 10 of Who, Capaldi etc - can you do one on Alien 3 as well pls, on the topic of underrated and unfairly slated albeit flawed works that have much better politics than their more popular franchise siblings

This film aged even worse because of ep 9 essentially undoing everything. It’s also just a bit poor narratively. I mean the canto bite portion is uhhh yeah war bad like sure. Then Luke’s hopelessness isn’t very well explained. Like sure between ep 6 and 8 like learns about his father the republic, palpatines 4 d chess game with himself and uhh genocide. So Rian is telling us that the guy who saw good in Darth Vader who is essentially space himmler doesn’t see any good in his nephew because he has a bad dream and decided to kill him in his sleep? After one bad dream? Wtf. Like had luke been having nightmares for awhile and become like super paranoid maybe I’d let it slide. Then like uhh he just sorta gets tired and dies cause uhhh plot and I suppose Rey needs to remain the focus although they made her rather uninteresting apart from her being a nobody. The biggest tradgedy is all these great actors just being let down by a bit of a mid story. Kylo ren is pretty interesting actually and definitely the best part of these films apart from him being a Vader stan and wanted to merc his uncle his motivations are a bit underdeveloped. In conclusion TLJ works as a great standalone movie just not as a Star Wars film or in a Star Wars trilogy which is a shame but oh well it’s all over now.

That 45 second intro skit shockingly better represented my personal experiences with this movie better than probably anything else I've seen online. I agree with this 100%, absolutely loved this movie on first viewing and just found it increasingly rich to revisit after for all the reasons you described, probably still my favourite movie in the entire franchise. So of course it had to go and spiral off into one of the biggest pop culture shitshows in recent memory.

I liked The Last Jedi already, in fact it's one of my favourite films in Star Wars canon, but this video got me thinking about things I never considered like how Del Toro is almost a glimpse of what Finn could be if he just left without fighting the fascists

Also, unpopular opinion but Rey being a blood Palpatine is way better than her being a “Nobody”. Far more interesting for Rey’s character and her arc forcing her to struggle even harder with her sense of self worth. The one thing Rey hated more than being no one is being the most evil person in the universe, pushing her further into her self loathing and sense of unworthiness.

Love this video, TLJ is great however I have to mention that TROS is also great and gets just as much of an unfair hard time, overhated and underrated, as TLJ. Both are GOATED.
