Great video! One of the biggest challenges for most of us, myself included, is racing yourown race, or pace, and not going out to quickly at the start.

This video painfully reminds me of coming into the turn in first place on a 100 fly race, and finishing dead last. I distinctly remember thinking "hey I'm faster than all these guys with better pb's than me... ...I messed up" :')

#Guilty. I've done this many times and something I've realized is that when you start off a race hard and fast... eventually, your going to have to pace yourself. At that moment, I bring myself back to your videos about running form and breathing and then continue with my run/race. Great video!

I never liked the idea of negative split because it implies running conservatively and then making up the lost time at the beginning. That means you're not likely to see a massive improvement on your PB if you end up not emptying the tank. For my last half marathon I ran my fourth 5k split 1 minute 20 seconds slower than my first first. But overall I gained 5 minutes on my previous PB which was completely unexpected. So negative splitting to me means you have reached a plateau and it's about squishing those last minutes. There's also something I like as a challenge : how long can I hold that unreasonably fast pace. I can only remember one instance where I really bonked hard and did not achieve the result I was looking for, and that was because instead of going with my gut feeling I followed friends that were running even faster than my intention. Lesson learned that's for sure !

Thanks for a great video. My goal is a halv marathon. Your suggestion is to slow down the first 2-3miles by 3% in order to achieve a PB in the end of the race right? Did I catch the essence here?

I got confused. So every record for 1500 and above is with a negative split. And scientists say you better have a 3% faster first mile in a 5k. How could one meet both the optimal conditions without having an awkwardly slow pace between mile 1 and mile 1.5?

How can I pace without a smartwatch during a race? When I do series is easier because it's a known distance and just keep certain tempo in my mind to achieve the final goal. (also very sweaty hands to look at the cellphone while running) Any ideas? Thank you, nice video!

What you are trying to do is probably the hardest thing for any runner to do. What’s the Second hardest? Running negative splits WITH a smart watch. 1. If you can and have done your race distance with negative splits WITH your watch, then you are halfway there. If not, achieve this first. I’ve been in your position before....and before Covid shit racing down, I had 3 races in a row all with even or negative splits...but all WITH the watch. 2. In training, so every run including easy runs doing even or negative splits. You gotta get your body to know what it feels like at any speed and at any distance. I’ve never done it without the watch, but I have been doing it for so long with the watch that I know I wouldn’t be that far off. 3. You need a support crew to help you pace the 1st 1/3 of your race. Why 1/3? Because if you mail the first 1/3 correctly, it is almost impossible to blow it in the last 2/3. All the mistakes are made in the first 1/3. Of it’s a 5k, you need someone at the 400 meter mark, the 800 meter mark, the 1200 meter mark, and the 1600 meter mark to yell your time to you at each of those marks. Yeah....it sounds crazy, but if you want it bad enough, you bring a team. That team will keep you from going out too fast, and you’ll nail the first 1/3 of the race almost perfect and your body will take it over from there. 4. Just realize that EVERYONE goes out way too fast in the first 1/3. Mentally, you’ll see so many people ahead of you and your brain will tell you to speed up. Have the discipline to say no to your brain. Just say no. If you want to finish 10th in the race, then you better be 30th at the 1/3 mark, otherwise you went out too fast just like everyone else. Hold back....visually you should see people slowly pulling away in the first 1/3 of the race. That’s your visual cue that you are doing the RIGHT thing. Just my two cents.....but it works.

Why is triathlon swim, bike, run? It would be interesting to see what would be the times if you were to bike, run, swim. Or bike, swim, run. Or run, bike, swim. And finally run, swim, bike.
