As a very long time listener/watcher, don't change a thing. The "useless drivel" makes this podcast a perfect mix between learning and hanging with people who feel likes friends. Thanks guys.

I almost never comment on videos. I love the useless drivel. I enjoy the banter, jokes and relationship that develops while delivering all this great info and content for listeners. Don't change it! I don't want a cold classroom lecture show. I want a discussion between friends. Thanks for all of it!

The transcription club is why I joined open studio. I knew I needed the structure and goalsetting and accountability to develop this essential skill to playing jazz. Adam is a wonderful teacher and the group is supportive and inspiring. The more I’ve worked at transcribing, the more fun, it has become because now, instead of it feeling like this impossible task that I am painfully chipping my way at, it now feels more like a treasure hunt. I’m listening, and I’m hearing things more easily. I’m understanding and figuring out a particular phrase that I really like. Then being able to play and record it along with the original recording is a thrill.

Liked the idea of "reverse engineering the improvisation process" through transcription. The banter is great imo. It is clear that you all like and respect each other a great deal. No need to cut out the natural back and forth that comes out of that. Thanks as always.

The OS transcription club has been a game changer for me in terms of developing my ear and my technique as I transition from being a classical player to a jazz player. My approach is to listen, listen, listen; sing, sing, sing; take it to the piano with the recording usually at a pretty slow speed, until I really learn all the subtleties; then record myself playing along with the recording. That last piece and the accountability that goes with it is what really helps push me to each next level. And finally, I do my best to notate it because it’s nice to come back to it. Along the way I pick up and understand the harmonic and intervallic relationships of what’s going on a solo, which helps make it easier to take it into other keys. I have found it to be challenging and incredibly rewarding work.

Guyss, remember you've got a piano right under your fingers. Adam, when you say you can fake a bill evans solo in Israel I believe you with every inch of my soul, but I rather have a sneak peak with my ears, lol love you two, you are two of the finest jazz teachers out there. I'll use this video as a sign that I should pick up transcribing again. I always end up giving up and looking for an already written transcription and play that instead.

I don’t understand these people who hate the stuff. Jazz might be all of that Csevenb9 stuff to some people but it’s really at its core about expressing your personality and I feel like we get to see both your personalities through the “useless dribble” which really shines a lens on all your teaching and makes it way more valuable

I think y’all should do ad reads and get that money. If a viewer is put off by an ad read and doesn’t realize they can just skip past I very much doubt they’ll get anything out of these lessons any way. Goes just right over their head. Love y’all and thanks for all you do for musicians

Caleb could "green screen" their background windows into ad wallpaper, like they put behind press conferences. That would be preferable over placing actual moving ads back there, as if the windows were TV screens. They could do product placements (What's in your mug, Peter?) and make seamless transitions, during the banter, into little 5-10 second ad spots, and then right back into conversation. It'll take practice, and they might have to internalize the infomercial mindset... but then if there's an avalanche, they'll say he shouldn't have started skiing on that wild slippery slope to perdition. Then again, that could be victim blaming... I've heard that the viking privacy network company is an agent of the devil himself! You know what? I'd keep watching awkwardly even if they talked a little too personally about manscaping. That's just how it is. If the ad money is needed for running open studio, that's okay. Try to avoid stuff that tries to manipulate people against their better judgement. There are quite a few relatively "neutral" ads out there. It's always best if the ads aren't needed, of course.

science is the observation of causes and effects. art is the application of those observations to obtain specific results. good scientists tend to record their observations so that other scientists can benefit from the information. even without that consideration, good scientists tend to write down their observations so they can come back to them and compare different trials. music works in the same ways as other sciences. sure, there are ppl who can keep up without a lead sheet or who can catch the vibe on the go. writing/transcribing, however, shares that understanding with those who might not excel at catching on right away.

Concerning the version of "transcribing" where music gets written out: why write it out? So other people can read it. A lot of people skips this last step. How closely are people, reading what you wrote out, getting to the original? Are there things that people consistently do or not do that you didn't expect? Are there things that you did not write out that you probably should have, or are there things that you wrote that don't really matter and could be taken out? Criticisms like this are hard to achieve without external feedback.

So when are we getting that Spindrift sponsorship? The lemon limeade is quite good. Keep the banter, as it humanizes the process. I was never a Seinfeld fan, but I did enjoy Curb Your Enthusiasm. I think that a barrier that I faced with transcription was analysis paralysis. I got so obsessed with the theory that I forgot to internalize the music. Being able to sing the music, play it in different registers and keys, and play the ideas on different tunes--that helped me apply the transcription. You sing it and play it enough and the music becomes a part of you.

not that i agree with his POV, but Joel Ross doesn’t recommend transcribing, and says he doesn’t. he recommends listening of course. it has something to do with giving room for your voice, it doesn’t totally make sense to me. but he does have his own voice and he’s incredible. i find it fascinating nonetheless

I mean, a listener COULD be practicing muscle memory stuff, at their piano/keyboard, during the banter, if they're that concerned about efficient use of this time. You could even improvise a soundtrack to the episode, if you want (plug your phone into your keyboard's audio input, or plug both into a mixer or audio interface, or use loopback from your computer/interface, or...) We all don't mind practicing at the qwerty keyboard, while we listen... so, why not the other keyboard instead? Of course, today is Hypocrites Day, so here I type, broken-hearted,...🙃.
